  1. Does anyone at least know the thread I'm talking about? Thing has been on for like 10 hours now.
  2. I know I saw a post on this a week or two ago, but I can't find it. Occasionaly when I try to unmount my USB HD, I get a "device busy" message. Please excuse me asking the question again, but I can't get the dang thing unmounted tonight. Normally I just wait an hour, and it's not busy anymore, but It's been on for 5 hours now, and still busy. How do I find out what it's busy doing, and how do I kill it when I find out?
  3. I believe you need to purchase the powerpack for that. Although I may be wrong.
  4. First question. Did you mess with the "share a connection" option? If so, it may be something as simple as shorewall. Even if you don't have shorewall blocking anything, try having it block everything, then go back and completely open it up. Reset your machine (probably not necessary, but old Win habbits die hard). When you get back in, and if it isn't fixed by this point, go into mcc --> network & Internet --> monitor connections, and then hit connect. This happened to me a couple of months ago. Shorewall showed as open, but it was blocking everything in and out. Close as I can tell, it happened when I messed with the "share a connection", but it could have been something else. Hopefully your problem is this simple. It sure sounds simmilar to mine.
  5. Not trying to be too simplistic here, but if you have MDK 9.2 with everything working, why don't you just use it untill the correct winmodem drivers are out for 10.0? I'm doing that right now. I have 2 computers, one with DSL connection (my 10.0 OE computer) and one I use for running a sound system at my church. Since my sound system computer only has dial up, with winmodem, I have left 9.2 on it. I mean, I enjoy 10.0 and all, but I'm not going to get all pissed off, because I can't use it on both computers. I believe the point was brought up that most of these drivers are kernel specific. It takes a little time to get them out. MDK 9.2 is an excellent OS, keep using it and check for new drivers every couple of weeks. Simple enough. BTW Ixthusdan, I had a vissioneer scanner (nice one too I might add) that didn't get any XP support either. That $10 offer is almost insulting isn't it? Gave it away.
  6. I would be interested in finding out how you do that. I have problems with my USB HD and wonder If I could do something like that with it.

    Simple question

I was looking in MCC. Found font controll, but what about color change?

    Simple question

This may sound a little simple, and if it's an obvious answer that I'm just not seeing, please excuse me. How do you change your desktop fonts and colors in GNOME? I have a light background, and I can barely read the fonts?
  9. Will give it a shot when I get home this evening. Thanks Gowator.
  10. Thanks Steve. That did the trick. But it seems like everytime I get an answer to one question, another pops up. The above mentioned script converts the avi file into .m1v(video) and .mpa(audio) files. How do I combine these two to be burned. I am using K3B right now, and I can only burn the video file. Is there another app needed to combine the two, or is there a better burning app, that will do that durring the burn?
  11. That was it Gowator. I didn't have GDM, but I did have XDM. Somehow it got switched to KDM (don't know how, as I've never messed with that before). When I switched back to XDM, the familiar login screen came back and I was able to enter as normal. I appreciate your help. Extra credit for being away from home. Thanks again.
  12. Looks like exactly what I need, unfortunately, I'm realtively new at this (Linux/scripts), and am unsure how to: 1. Save the script 2. Use the script. I have installed all of the necessary apps. I just need to figure out how to procede. Can someone explain the process to me, or direct me to a post that might help?
  13. Just checked Mandrake Users Management Tool and it only shows the normal users, not the big list. Anyone have any Ideas about this?
  14. I have some old home VHS tapes that I transfered to AVI in windows last year, I want to burn them to VCD, but of course they have to be in MPEG format. I've tried one conversion app, with no luck (can't remember the name). Can anyone suggest a good converter?
  15. I recently had to shut my computer down (check connections to CD ROM). When I restarted everything booted fine, but when I got to the log in screen it had changed. In addition to the normal users (myself, my wife and a buddy thru ftp) there were about 23 other users listed. Now I know they aren't really users, but the following were listed as users: adm, bin, caemon, games, halt, lp, mail, news, Nobody nobody, operator, root, shutdown, sync, system user for apache2, etc...... I'm thinking, "ok that's wierd". When I tried to log in with my information screen went blank then jumped back to login screen. So I purposely entered an incorrect password. It gave me an "incorrect username/password" error. Ok, so that tells me that it at least recognized my username and password, although it wouldn't start GNOME. On this new log in screen there was an option for "console login" so when I tried that it accepted my username and password, then I started GNOME with "startx". Everything was fine. I tried changing my settings to "automatic login" but it still jumps to that wierd login screen. As long as I log in thru console and use the startx command, everything is good, but I am confused about what has happened. I've got no problem doing it this way, but my wife is another story. Can someone help me get my system back to the way it should be, and maybe shed some light on what has happened?
  16. Glad to hear everything working fine now.
  17. I had the same problem with disk 2 (1 and 3 were fine) but I just downloaded it from another mirror and it worked fine. Come to think of it, tho, I tried to upgrade the first time, and just decided to do a fresh install the second time. Maybe that made a diffrence. Are you using the upgrade option or install?
  18. That's my zip drive. Funny thing is, supermount has never mounted that thing in 10.0 OE untill I manualy entered the usbhd line. Now it mounts the zip drive every time. Go figure.
  19. Added the 2nd 0 back in, and I can mount again, but supermount mounts it (which I don't want because when supermount mounts it, it is slow as heck) and I have to umount /mnt/removable and then mount /mnt/usbhd, to get it where I want it to be. I thought the noauto part of that line was supposed to fix that. Idealy here is what I want: I want to be able to turn my computer on, boot up and log in, with no usbhd mounted. I want to be able to manualy mount and unmount with command. Am I too far out in left field here? Also, I've been reading other post, and have seen other 10.0 OE users's fstab that is not using supermount. Magic mount or something? Does it work better, and how do I get it if it does?
  20. Ok, made the change. /dev/hda1 / ext3 noatime 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 noatime 1 2 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/hdd,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbhd vfat rw,noauto,user,exec 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 none /mnt/zip supermount dev=/dev/scsi/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/part4,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu,codepage=850 0 0 But now I can't mount usbhd at all. This is what I get: [kevin@kevins kevin]$ mount /mnt/usbhd mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist I guess I'll try adding the umask=0 and the extra 0 back in. If anyone has any thoughts on this, I would appreciate the input

    Mounting Drives

Wait a minute. I'm running 10.0 OE. Why doesn't my fstab look like this. Supermount is still screwing things up for me. How do I get my sys to use Magic Mount?
  22. MDK put that in there. Don't know why. I'll give it a shot. Thanks.
  23. I guess I was a little too hasty with the RESOLVED status. Still having a little problem. When I booted up my system, MDK made some changes to my fstab line. It now looks like this: /dev/hda1 / ext3 noatime 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 noatime 1 2 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/hdd,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbhd vfat umask=0,user,noauto,exec 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 Problem now - I only have read access. Can someone help me correct this so that I can also write and delete on my USB HD?
  24. Ok, I was having a micro$oft moment. I was making things more confusing than they needed to be. I had mounted the usb hd as root and was trying to open it outside of console. It wouldn't let me. When I unmounted it and remounted as regular user, everything works fine. BTW Transfer rate is 50X faster. Serious. It is actually working at USB 2.0 speed. When supermount mounted it, it was transfering about 300kbps. I am a happy camper. Sometimes, just posting a question makes me think about it a little diffrently than I was. I hope this helps someone else who may be having the same problem.
  25. Ok, I finaly got my USB HD to work in 10.0 OE. But when supermount mounts it, the transfer rate is really slow. Also supermount is moody. Sometimes It will mount, sometimes it won't. I decided to make my own entry in fstab so that I can manually mount it (I've read that this will also help the speed issue). Here's what I have: /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 /mnt/usbhd vfat rw,noauto, user, exec 0 This accomplishes the mounting, but when I open the directory, this is what I get (see attached screenshot) Where have I messed up in my fstab entry? someone please help. I would like to move some files off of my desktop, and am getting a little desperate here. [EDIT] V V V Those are all direcotries in that picture V V V
