  1. The apache web site contains all the info you need on the many different configurations available.

I have never used apache with windoze, so i have no idea how it works there.

How far have you got? Is apache now running? do you get the welcome screen when you type :

    http://127.0.0.1/

The apache config file (httpd.conf) contains several tips  and sugestions as to possible configurations, have a look at it and see if you want to change anything. For example, the default directory to serve up your web pages is in /var/www/html  but you can change it to whatever dir you choose. The default port will be port 80 but you can change it to whatever you want. Try putting your own index.html page in /var/www/html and test it out. Then go from there.

i have setup files in the specific folder that you specified and when i type http://localhost/photoworks (photoworks is the name of the folder where i put my website files) it works.

Now what settings do i have to change for this website to be available from the ouside.

my current ip address is 82.0.59.93 so i thought that by entering http://82.0.59.93 i would be able to access my website from the outside. unfortunately it does not work.

There must be something that i am missing, but i do not know what.

    :wall:

  2. You don't really need usermin. (not useradmin) You can do all you require without it.

I take it you found the server menu with apache, Bind sendmail  etc? With regard to apache, you will need to allow access through your firewall if you have one set up.

is there a tutorial somewhere out there on how to setup apache on linux ?

i come from windows and on it i had an application called EASYPHP which included apache, mysql and php so that i could setup this website on my localhost :

    fashionbug forum website

i would like to migrate my local version of it on linux localhost.

  3. I thought mandrake by default set it up as secure with https://localhost:10000?

It should do but it doesn't always happen. If it isn't running secure, but webmin is installed then typing http will just bring a page saying..."running secure try https" blablabla. But neither will work if webmin isn't running.

when i get on that specific page where there is a list of items, like webadmin or useradmin, and then i click on useradmin, it tells me that useradmin is not installed or not configured and it tells me to type urpmi useradmin.

When i type this command line, it tells me that the package is not found.

  4. Hullo,

Open up a consol, type su and enter root pasword. Then type:

    service httpd start

I sugest you also install  Webmin to manage and configure your servers. So  Open up a consol, type su and enter root pasword. Then type:

    urpmi webmin

Then to access webmin, type in your browser:  http://127.0.0.1:10000/

    Check out http://www.apache.org/

i tried to do what you suggested but when i type "service httpd start" i get this : Re-creating /etc/httpd/extramodules

and after istalling webmin, when i type http://127.0.0.1:1000, i get this error message :

"An error occurred while loading http://127.0.0.1:10000/:

Could not connect to host 127.0.0.1 (port 10000)"

    :wall:

  5. i was wondering if i can install ndiskwrapper on mandrake linux 10.0 so that the system can recognize my belkin wireless pcmcia card and my bluetooth USB adapter. is there a link on mandrake website where i can find it.

  6. i tried to configure kmail to be able to read my mails from my netscape account. i entered the correct information in the setup, but it tells me that the host entry is wrong.

Now when i try to access to my netscape mail account by using the browser and going to the netscape website, after i have entered my username and password, it tells me that an error was encountered.

There is nothing wrong with the netscape server since when i access to it from Windows (i have dual boot) i can get into it.

any idea of what could be the issue ?

    photoworks : 24/08 08:16 : More info provided

my network works fine since i am able to browse the web and access all my mails accounts except the one from netscape and when i go the the netscape website to the mail section and i enter my username and password, it then tells me that an error occurred and click on a link to coninue, when i click on the link, it brings me back to the screen to enter my username and password.

When then i tried to configure kmail to receive read mail from my email account, it tells me that the host is wrong.

all my other email account can be retrieved by kmail, so this is not a network problem. everything works except the access to netscape mail.

  7. i have installed mandrake 10 discovery edition.

is there a way on the mandrake website to upgrade it to Powerpack edition or looking for other packages that were not included in the discovery version ?

I apologize for the silly question but i am really a newbie with Linux.

  8. i received yersterday the package for the discovery edition of Mandrake 10.0.

so i started the installation process.

i already have windows xp professional in ntfs format installed.

First i partitionned my hard disk with partition magic 8.0 :

i created a primary partition for swap, then a primary partition for linux. Then i was unable to create an extended partition for my common data. Well, i forgot about it and installed mandrake anyway.

The installation was successful and i did not lose windows xp integrity

i updated from the mandrake website for the package.

Now when i try to launch openoffice.org application, the application starts to launch, then nothing happen.

Does anyone have an idea why ?

The other thing is that i would like to reinstall mandrake from scratch so that i can create an extended partition for my data.

  9.

I have started to read those link and, i am afraid, i am still at a loss. Is there not an explicit tutorial on how to partition your hard drive from windows with Partition Magic, without uninstaling windows.

I was thinking more like a step by step, since the link you provided are more for those who have a knowledge already.

Like i said, i never did before partitionning.

  10. Maybe its a bad download or bad cd burn?

BTW, feel free to try other distros, we all have (and should).

But I must say a text install seems a lot simplier than running a gentoo install.

Just wondering how do you the integrity of a mandrake 10.0 iso file?

I am downloading Mandrake 10.0 at the moment from one of the mirrors and i saw that there is a small file with a folowup of numbers to check the integrity of the download but i do not know how it works, especially since i am downloading the files on windows XP.

    :D

  11. nope but you *can* if you like.

club members get 'special fast mirrors' but its the same stuff as non menmbers except a few things like you get the proper Nvidia 3D drivers (which you can just dload from nvidia anyway) ... acrobat reader (which you can download free anyway)

You can add softwre sources and then use the graphical installer.... either way or use the CLI either way...

the conceivable advantage is you get the development releases earlier but if your a complete noobie then its better to wait anyway instead of being on the bleeding edge...

which brings us back to ... how much do you wanna give mandrake?

Mandrake are crap at marketing but the operating system is great!

I definitely want to invest in the PowerPack.

    :D

  12. i have recently downloaded the Mandrake move edition on this site :

    MandrakeMove

When i launch Gaim and connect to Yahoo, first it has difficulty to connect, i have to try several times, and then when it is conected and i display my buddy, none appear Online and furthermore, they don't see me online.

i have no problem when i connect to Aol Messenger.

does anyone have an idea what is the problem ?

    :help:

  13. installation is the same, the only difference is what is included.

Tip: learn about urpmi as soon as you installed Mandrake

Tip... do like Darkelve says :D

(Its in the FAQ's and will enrich your experience no end)

Do i have to conclude that the feature "Easily download RPMs from www.Mandrakeclub.com and install them with just one click" is not really what it says ? Would i still have to use command lines to install new sofwares on linux ?

  14. i would like to install mandrake 10.0 but i hesitate between the discovery edition and the powerpack edition.

Apparently the powerpack edition is more for advanced user. However in the product description, it describe the following feature :

Easily download RPMs from www.mandrakeclub.com and install them with just one click!

Does that mean that this feature is not available in the Discovery edition, as it it not mentionned ?

There are also some softwares available in the power pack, such as Blender for example which are not included in the discovery edition.

Would i be able to get them once i chose the discovery edition or do i have to opt for the Powerpack.

Is there a significant difference of installation process between the discovery and the powerpack, or is it the same ?
