  1. in some cases, antialiasing looks worse. on my system, i had to turn off aa in mozilla cause the fonts looked so bad. in kde, certain fonts look worse when they're antialiased. i don't even notice an improvement in gnome. but then again, this is just my system. obviously aa seems to improve fonts for most everyone
  2. i think there's something wrong. i got a similar system and my apps don't take nearly as much time to load. even so, kde is still way to slow so i go with fluxbox
  3. i don't know myself, but you could try searching for one at freshmeat.net or sourceforge.net
  4. is there a way for gdm to remember my username and password? i'm the only user on my machine, so i don't ever change users. all i want to have to do i choose my window manager and be off.
  5. have you tried doing with the software sources manager? (configuration->packaging->software sources manager)
  6. the box right below it is the minimum font size for antialiasing. try lowering it a little bit and see if that works. if it doesn't do the trick, then i'm out of suggestions, sorry
  7. i got the same problem when i disabled antialiasing in the options menu. to open up the options menu, click the 3rd menu from the right, and click the bottom entry in that menu. then click this: that should get everything back to normal.
  8. tools is the third menu from the right, and then click on options which is at the very bottom of that menu. now select the fourth item in the first subtree of options and check the very first checkbox and hit enter. that should get things back to normal

    update with urpmi

first you wanna update your sources: urpmi.update -a then do the updating: urpmi --auto-select
  10. yeah, i checked out that post the other day but running spadmin doesn't really apply to my problem. oo already recognizes all my fonts (including the ms fonts) for some related (maybe) news, i tried to see what would happen if i disabled antialiasing in oo from tools - option - openoffice.org - view. after i disabled aa, all fonts in the ui and the editing area disappeared. the only thing i could see of menus is the underlines that signify shortcuts.
  11. i've tried about half my fonts, and they all seem to be pretty awful looking

    mandrakeonline

anyone here use it? i'd like to get it working cause i'm too lazy to update myself. first off, i did run the mandrakeonline wizard from configuration -> other -> discover custom services (and i did choose to have automatic updates). i also made sure to schedule updates from mandrakeonline.net and i do have a permanent internet connection. even though i did all these things, my machine isn't updating automatically. anyone know how to get it working? after searching through my /etc/cron directories i found that the program in question is /usr/bin/mdkupdate. if i run it manually all scheduled updates are downloaded and installed. however, nothing is downloaded or installed when cron calls it. i'm positive cron runs it, but for some reason nothing gets downloaded
  13. yeah, i've done that. i meant to make sure to say that on my first post, but i forgot
  14. the only other posts i've seen regarding oo and ugly fonts relates to fonts and the openoffice ui. my problem isn't with the ui, its with the main part of writer (although the problem isn't just with writer) where you type in the text. i also wanna say that this is the first time i've used an oo app in about a month, and i never had an ugly font problem before. i think the problem might be a package i may have updated that might screw up the oo display. has there been any recent mdk updates that have come out relating to oo or fonts? i don't really pay attention to what i update. if it ain't a package update, anyone else know what it might be?

    Where's XFT?

xft.pc is part of the Xft-devel package, so you'll need to make sure you have that installed
  16. you could probably do a google search for urpmi howto or something similar. basically what you wanna do is urpmi.addmedia -a, then urpmi --auto-select.
  17. aterm is my main console app, sometimes rxvt. here's my aterm command line: aterm -geometry 80x50 -bg black -fg white -tr -trsb -sh 60 -sr -sl 1200 -fn '-*-lucida console-*-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*'
  18. i don't think you can move it. in gnome help it says that you can't move the menu panel. i'm no gnome expert, so i'm not sure if there's a workaround for this. also try asking your question on gnomesupport.com/forums
  19. i tried it, but couldn't figure out how to get the cursor. on a side note, snap and several other artwiz fonts i tried looked horrible in my terminal. how does yours look?
  20. i'm not sure about your update problem as i've never gotten that error before. you can get evolution 1.2 from texstar at: ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/distribut...ndrake/9.0/rpms add the mirror to your sources and you should be able to download and install the new version with rpmdrake
  21. i think if you just do "reload config" you won't have this problem. i'm not positive cause i'm not in fluxbox right now
  22. yes, it'll work, you should be just fine
  23. from reading that link, it looks like some of you had to go through a lot more to get theirs to work. guess i lucked out!
  24. go to tools -> options -> language settings -> writing aids. make sure that the openoffice myspell spellchecker is checked. click on the edit button and make sure that its checked there also. you may also have to install the myspell package for your language.
  25. there's a thread around here somwhere that deals with it, just do a search for it
