  1. I think that happened to me when I burned a disk bad. Try burning again.
  2. I changed /etc/modules.conf so that I now have the line but it didn't do anything (I continue to have the net-pf-10 error). Freezes with other apps than Firefox don't log any error in /var/log/messages. This is a different crash-- in mine, I cannot even move the mouse.
  3. My brother apparently had the same type of problem, but he used an ATI card. He did, however, have an Athlon XP processor. so who knows, maybe some support for that is buggered? (He too had an A7N8X Deluxe). So it might not be display-- I've had it crash in command line with the "nv" driver so... I've re-compiled the kernel so it's no longer using the default cpu-optimization settings (at least, I think I am, is there any way to tell?), I'll get back to if it crashes or not after this. It's odd how some days, like right after I installed v10b2, it seemed stable, and other days it crashes frequently... with no seeming difference between computer usage. Once on bootup I did get a kernel panic talking about some IRQ problem... I thought that was interesting.
  4. Well, it's all AMD, it seems. I wonder what the problem is? Either it's something with AMD support or it's the video because we use NVidia. It's probably not chipset drivers... Is your kernel compiles for general CPU support (Mandrake's default) or is it compiled specifically for Athlon/Duron? Who knows, I don't know very much about this.
  5. Uh... well... "df" is a tip to those n00bs who...uh... don't know about it...
  6. I wonder if URPMI stores packages or something that take up a lot of space. I need to clear out some space, any ideas what I could remove? Something is eating up a lot of space... Where can I find the directories that take up the most space? I know "df" shows which drives are filling up, but I don't know how to check which folders take up the most disk space. I'm going a bit crazy here, too, so apologies for my weird typing. I have no idea how stable my currentl compiled kernel is. If you've read my other posts you might realize I am losing my sanity over the stability of my system. So far it's running fine, but... Edit: moved from Tips & Tricks by spinynorman
  7. My crash doesn't just happen in X, it's happened in plain command line, too, so somethng's up. I run memtest for awhile and my comp eventually seems to freeze. I hope that's not the problem, bad memory-- I paid 120 for this stick of Corsair RAM-- and it works fine in windows! I'm going crazy. I have an nForce2 chipset, AthlonXP 2500+, 512MB RAM, A7N8X-Deluxe. I am going crazy. Let's see if it freezes now... I installed athcool and I'm going to see if power savings is the culprit. Other possible culprits to similar freezing, from my investigations: ALSA, some "CPU Disconnet" thing (?), memory issues.... Everyone put down what hardware you're using, the nature of the crash (mine is COMPLETE crash, no response from anything, nothing works, hard boot is only way to get back in). Perhaps is we see a pattern we can send an e-mail to someone to get this fixed.
  8. If you like roguelike games, check out Ragnarok (AKA Valhalla)
  9. Yes but it also requires goat's blood to couteract the windex spell!!! Then I'm in the clear, I don't have any (goat) blood right now. My efforts were not wasted.
  10. Good thing I'm using kernel-2.6.2-1mdk as a fallback-- anyone know where I can get the source for that? It seems cooker only has 2.6.2-3mdk available.
  11. Huh. Did you get this to appear at the end of compilation: make[2]: *** [3rdparty/prism54/islpci_mgt.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [3rdparty/prism54] Error 2 make: *** [3rdparty] Error 2 ? I tried disabling some of those 3rd party additions in the xconfig utility but no go. I don't have that much of a clue as to what I'm doing, and if I'm not mistaken the kernel compilation thing in the FAQ either is outdated or my system is somehow different. I don't know. It seems like I'm doing everything just fine but... Also, what exact steps did you take? This thing seems to hate me or something...!
  12. I had problems with my mouse, so I hit F1 instead of Enter and did an expert install. Oddly enough, that worked. Try that, and tell me if it worked for you...
  13. Anyone else using it? Tell me how it's going for you, I'm having problems...: 1) Using it (could this be the cause of freezeups I'm having?) 2) Compiling it Tell me if you can do either and get it to work....
  14. Although this is irrelevent to this topic, I need to emphasize this fact: When installing windows it appears that windows needs to be on the primary HDD, else it won't boot, because win's bootloader wasn't made by programming, it was made in a Satanic ritual.
  15. Same here! Are you using cooker/10b2? They appear to be working on it or something, as I think an improvement was in the cooker but menudrake still does't work right!
  16. Aaaaaaaaaaah! It's crashing so much I can't stand this! Is there anything I can do!?
  17. Yeah, I get that a lot, too. I just ignore it. You'll find that many, many packages are reported to have bad signatures-- don't worry about it.
  18. Hmm.. I wonder if it has anything to do with the mouse driver??? It always seems to freeze while I'm doing something, like scrolling... Anyone else notice this? It doesn't have anything to do with firefox on my system, It just froze without me ever touching a browser... Damn it! It was so stable before, too... :( Hopefully changing the mouse driver will fix something...
  19. Interesting. I just had another freeze-- while firefox was on. Not sure if it's connected or not. Hmmm...
  20. While I enjoy games available on URPMI, such as Beneath a steel sky (Joey is hilarious!) and neverball, I can't find classics such as dungeon or galaga. I know there's an xgalaga out there, but I can't get any rpms of it to work right on my mandrake installation. Anyone know of any good roguelike games, as well, that aren't text-based? It's just too much a pain in the butt for me to learn all the commands and stuff. I know FalconsEye Nethack works (tip: if you can't get it working set it to run in terminal, the rpm doesn't set that automatically, oops!) but is there anything else?
  21. What's the main difference between, say, the kernels with "smp", "enterprise", etc in their filename? My brother told me that smp is for multiple processors, but I don't know. Anyone care to enlighten me?
  22. Those kernels are stripped-down versions, as would the kernel used on the bootCD. They don't need the functionality of a normal desktop/server version, especially for "experimental stuff".
  23. Also, if you need to, try downloading an older version of the kernel. When I upgraded to the 10 beta 2 release, the nvidia web site wasn't able to determine my kernel version or whatever, so I upgraded and it worked. So... yeah, or something like that.
