  1. Thank you this link describes the problem perfectly. So there is nothing to be gained to switch to kernel-build when I have exactly 1GB..
  2. I am running KDE and I will try GNOME. I have alternated between 3D and non-3D desktop and did not see a visible difference. I also tried swiftfox instead of firefox and still didn't work. Just typing in the URL bar of mozilla causes a slowdown (it does the annoying auto-complete thing). Right now mandriva is running slower than my windows laptop.. Does the monitor size has any impact on the speed (e.g. is it a problem with displaying the images on a 22-in monitor?) Thanks for all the post thus far.
  3. I have done a memtest and there are no errors found. However I noticed that when I do "free -m", only about 850MB of RAM is shown as the total RAM whereas I have 1GB of RAM installed (and the total RAM was indicated to be 1GB when I ran memtest)....
  4. When I disabled compiz fusion 3D, the VLC player is working again - is there a way for VLC to run with 3D desktops? I am finding that this also happens with other programs (like wine) which doesn run with the 3D desktop...
  5. Are you saying that there should be NO swap used? because my machine shows: total used free Swap: 3992 0 3992 How do I know if I have the latest FF3? I install the updates regularly so I assume that it is up to date...
  6. THank you I think thatÅ› where the misunderstanding was. I am happy with the cube desktop - was just curious to hear what others think, didnt mean to set off a heated discussion about title bars :D
  7. All of these packages have already been installed (or cannot be installed). The problem is that when I try to play an avi file with VLC, the window opens for a fraction of a second and then just shut down, even on video files that were playing fine on VLC previously...
  8. I understand what a¨ title bar¨ is - but I am saying that there is no option on the right-click menu that says move to desktop #. THere is Advanced Move Minimized Maximize Shade CLose, and Move doesnt just assign the window to a new desktop as you said. I didnt want to nitpick but there are so many responses generated regarding this....
  9. I am running Mandriva 2008 and recently VLC player just wont play any avi or wmv or qt files (so basically all video files!). I tried downloading mplayer and win-codecs but neither of these complete (speed=0 when I urpmi them..). Can someone help?
  10. I don t get the ¨To Desktop¨ option when I right-click on the top toolbar..... However if I keep dragging the window toward the edge of the current desktop it will cross over into the next one...
  11. THanks for all the help - I disabled several of these entries and reduced the number of ttys. So far I havent seen a noticeable change. Firefox is continuing to stutter whenever I open a new tab or visit a flash-intensive site. Even when I srhink the firefox window there is a stutter to bring it back up again...

  13. nothing came up at all when ran chkconfig --list....
  14. As far I as I know I am not. I ran the top command and did not see it in the list of processes. Is there a reliable way to find out?
  15. Hi, I am running Mandriva 2008 on a intel celeron 2.2Ghz eMachine desktop. I have recently upgraded the RAM from 256 to 756MB, and it is running a lot smoother (installing package no longer slows the machine to a crawl). However right now I have Amorak, a mozilla firefox browser, and a bittrrent download open, and mozilla is extremely slow to the point of crashing. Also I am running the compizfusion 3D desktop. When I do a free -m I get the following: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 755 744 11 0 16 359 -/+ buffers/cache: 360 394 Swap: 3992 0 3992 Is this normal? I can run the same number of programs on a pentium III windows VISTA laptop and it wouldnt crash. Is there one particular program that consumes the most RAM? WHen I use the ¨top¨ command, I see that amorak, X, firefox and bittorrent takes a combined amount of 35% of mem. and about 60% CPU. THanks.
  16. Haha I guess looking cool is an important aspect! Even though I dont have a use for all that real estate, it is nice to know that I have it. I am beginning to get used to the paradigm of spreading out my windows across desktops and flipping through desktops. Now I hardly shrink windows anymore - I just drag them onto the next desktop. Overall I quite like the 3D cube desktop, it is innovative and fun to use once you get use to it, and it is vastly superior to the windows aero theme (those poor vista users...)
  17. Hi, I am currently running the 3D desktop (CompizFusion) on Mandriva 2008. While it looks very cool I am wondering what are the practical aspects of this desktop setup. I find myself using only one out of the 4 virtual desktops - when I work, I usually open one window after another without thinking about switching desktops first. Is there a way to open a window in one desktop and then move it to one of the other desktops? I know that this can be done in the classic scheme using the desktop pager. Anyone know of other benefits of using the 3D desktop please let me know too! Thanks!
  18. Hi, I am running Mandriva 2008 spring, and I just enabled compiz fusion and the cube desktop in KDE. Everything is fine but now for example when I click on menu, the menu list is loaded in a weird transition (side-swiping from the side). Is there anyway to change that so when I click on Menu or any other toolbar icon, the menu list would just appear instead of using some slow transition effect? ALso, is there a way to change the color of the menu list from Gray to something else? THank you!
  19. Thank you. It was just a matter of making the icons visible - the USB drive was already mounted automatically. Mandriva has so much potential and functionality - I really enjoy learning about it more and more.
  20. Hi, I just installed mandriva Spring 2008 onto my HD. Can someone give me a quick guide on how to get a portable USB drive recognized by Mandriva? Thanks very much.
  21. THanks for everyoneÅ› reply. Once I installed Mandriva One onto my harddrive the speed picked up. However it is still somewhat sluggish (I have not yet tried any of the 3D effects) so I think I will increase the amount of RAM in my machine.
  22. Hi, I am a newbie who is trying to install Mandriva on my desktop running windows XP. It is an emachine with Intel Celeron, 2ghz and 256 RAM. I downloaded Mandriva One and created an ISO-image boot disc. The installation starts smoothly, it prompts me for the language/time settings and if I want to use Metisse/Comp Fusion (I chose no 3D effects). Then the main desktop appeared and everything is sluggishly slow - the mouse cursor drags slowly and sometimes disappears and opening one window just takes forever. I don't have internet set-up yet (I haven't plugged the ethernet cable in the machine). I thought it was going to ask me about parititioning but it didn't.. Can someone help me identify the problem?? Thanks so much.
