How do you uninstall a package in slackware?
thanks!
-
It'll be interesting to check this out. But I'm waiting for 2006 to be released to the general public and hopefully by then they'll have the bugs worked out.
-
Well I need to correct that. They don't have a graphical installer (altho they are working on one), I meant using the cd.
-
When I first started using Gentoo I had a 733 mhz celeron. To do a complete install of Gentoo it took me 4-5 days. And no I didn't use the graphical installer. :P
Now I have a P4, 3.2 ghz processor and I can install in one day. I've found the best way to install Gentoo is thru the chroot environment. You can do this from either another distro or a live cd. That way you don't have any downtime.

I was completely windows free for almost three years and then I went back to school and had to use a windows program.
-
I have an Intel but my next one will probably be an AMD.

I never could get Baghira to work quite right. It wouldn't do the transparencies.
-
Is the dropshadow/transparency even stable yet? Last time I tried it (not long after 3.4 was released) it seemed like a bit of a mare and I went back to stock 3.3 / LE2005.
I haven't had any luck with enabling transparencies and drop shadows in xorg. Every time I try x refuses to load. So personally I would have to say that it's not stable yet

KDE has taken their packages and really broken them down so that you can be very selective as to what you install. This can make for a much "lighter" desktop than previously. I know of a number of loyal gnome users that have switched because of this reason.

I just upgraded to Mandriva LE 2005 on my daughter's box. I haven't played with it in years so I'm in the process of relearning it myself. I see questions on the board that I know the answers to - in Gentoo. Now I hope I'll be able to give answers for how to do things in Mandriva.

Ok- I'll admit it, I still use windows from time to time, and not just at work.
That's ok. You're forgiven!

is M2 part of Opera? or a seperate program? Also, will it share mail with a winxp(fat32)/madrivale2k5 dual boot?
M2 is built into Opera, it's very user friendly. As far as your other question I have no idea. I don't use windows.

Sweet! It was my fav for about a year but I got sick of the ads and hvaen't used it for about 2 years. Downloading now!
Cool! I don't know what you use as an email client but M2 is definitely worth checking out IMO.

Like most people I don't care what distro watch says. My distro of choice (Gentoo) will never rank in the top and I really don't care. And even tho I'm a Gentoo user I still think Mandriva is a great distro but for me personally I just prefer Gentoo. But that doesn't mean that I think Gentoo is a better distro than Mandriva. Like arctic said, it's all Linux and it's all just a matter of preference. To me Ubuntu is just the "flavor of the month" and I don't really care about the hype. I've never used it because I'm quite happy with my distro and am not interested in it. So I really wouldn't worry about what Distro Watch says. Just use what you like. :)

When you install an application using wine you have to go to the directory where your .exe file is using a terminal and run
wine nameof.exe
and it then installs in a hidden directory called .wine. Anything with a period in front of it is hidden. So in order to run your program you have to "show all files" (this is easy to do with Konqueror in KDE but not sure about gnome) and then navigate to where your program is installed. In mine it's /home/mystified/.wine/fake_windows/Program_Files/name of program. When you navigate to the program using the cd command (change directories) and you find the .exe for the program you want to run then you type wine program.exe. It should then (hopefully) start the application. Hope this helps.

My husband is the one that told me and he said he read it on the CNN web page.

No, it's not requireing (can't spell today) e-mail. The problem it's a Ezboard forum. The admin is a famous writer (Darren Shan if you heard of him, god knows why he choosed Ezboard), but frankly his computer skills are very limited.
I was an admin on an EZboard site (no, I didn't create it). They really do suck and you are very limited in your options. Guess you'll just have to be persistent about kicking the guy. I used to post on a board where we were bombarded by trolls and eventually they did get tired and moved on. Good luck with it!

Well now that Dell is offering Mandriva as an alternative to XP I think Mandriva must be on the right track. With them already having HP doing the same I'm hopeful that more people will take a chance and find out what a great distro Mandriva is.

Opera used to advertise as being the fastest browser on earth. I don't know if they still make that claim but you're right. It is fast.
-
I bought Opera but my license ran out when it went to the 8.0 version. So I was quick to take the offer when I heard about it a couple of weeks ago. I've been using Opera almost exclusively for several years. It's a great browser. Hopefully without the ads more people will try it out.

I've been using abiword mostly because I'm currently using gentoo and I can't face the Open Office compile times (I know I should install the binary, but I haven't yet).
Notch one up for being lazy.
emerge openoffice-bin
precompiled. ;)

I use Opera and occassionally Mozilla-Firefox. But I'm definitely a big Opera fan and use them for email too.

Your kernel source isn't the same as the kernel. Look at the number you got with the command uname -r vs. the kernel source installed. You need to remove that kernel source and track down the correct one. I'm not a Mandriva user so I don't know if that kernel source is in any of the repos. Hopefully somebody else can help you with that if you can't find it on your own.
-
To make sure you install the correct kernel-source type uname -r at the command prompt. That will tell you the kernel version you have installed.

Thanks for the quick response ian! I was asking for someone else since I don't use slack myself. :P
