no ndiswrapper
-
I'm going after a Bachelor's in Information Systems which is an IT degree from the business side. I've done my research and there are a lot of things you can do with this degree. Unfortunately not all universities offer this type of program.

Is this the first time you have booted since it was working with the native module?
Have you tried going to MCC > Hardware > Look at and configure hardware, and setting it up there?
Then go to Network and Internet > Wireless connection, and set that up.
No, it's not the first. Yes I went into MCC and tried. I looked at my hardware set up for the card and it shows that it's using module bcm43xx. Odd thing is that when I just go to wireless configure and connect buttons are greyed out.
Make sure you add the wireless module name to /etc/modprobe.preloadand make sure there is an alias in the /etc/modprobe.conf something like:
alias wlan0 bcmxxxxxx
or whatever the driver is called at the end of the alias line.
It's set up in modprobe.conf and I added it to modprobe.preload and rebooted and no luck.

Yes but it did the same thing using ndiswrapper and the windows driver. That's what brought up the discussion where I found out about the linux native driver.
-
Before I was using ndiswrapper and a windows driver and it stopped working but with the help of Greg2 he showed me that a native driver was built into the kernel. So I did modprobe bmc43xx, configured my network through mcc, went to wireless, it scanned and found my network. Now I had to reboot and I lost my connection again. I went through all of the above mentioned steps and still no wireless. Suggestions?
Thanks

I agree with what Ix said. I have tried to install a non OEM package on computers before. If you're just installing windows that doesn't have the drivers you need it can be a nightmare to find those drivers and install them. So I wouldn't really say it's a linux problem but a problem with any OS.

I've seen some of those sidewalk artists on tv. Pretty amazing stuff!

I had a similar experience when trying to get my wireless card working on my laptop. It told me I needed an rpm that was only available through the Mandriva Club. I turned out I didn't need the rpm but I wasn't at all happy about this stunt from Mandriva.
-
Nope, I just type emerge blackdown-jre and Gentoo takes care of the rest.
-
Why doesn't Gentoo have a Control Center? Eh? EEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHH?????? Or perhaps a default front-end for portage? No default front-end? Awwww. :P
Because Gentoo users like cli and don't want something like MCC. :P

True. But we also discussed how to install Java last week, and yet the question still pops up.
That's one thing I don't understand about java and other browser plugins. In Gentoo I just emerge them and that's all I have to do. I don't understand why it has to be so complicated in Mandriva. Surely there's some way to fix this?
-
There is a 64 bit version from blackdown which is what I use in Gentoo. http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux-amd64.html

Because it's time-consuming, and for the period of time while you're compiling (on many systems) the system is basically unusable for all but simple tasks such as IM and possibly web browsing.
When I first started using Gentoo I had a 733 mhz Celeron. I could compile and do anything else I want. It's never bothered at all.
-
I don't see why people have a problem with compiling. It never bothers me.
-
Or you can use the Mandriva rpm that's available from Opera.
-
Wow! And I thought my desktop was plain. :P

Why not Mandriva (the French distro) ?

I read the article about it and they discussed Mandriva but chose Ubuntu intead. They didn't say why.

Thanks anna!

I use Opera as my primary browser and have all my usernames and passwords stored there. My username changed on my banking site but I'm not getting a prompt to store the changes. Does anyone know if there's a way to manually edit a file in .opera and at least delete the entry so that maybe the wand will prompt me the next time?

I poked around the Gentoo forums a bit and it seems there are problems amongst the developers about which direction to take with Gentoo. Some want to make it more user friendly to appeal to the masses and others want to leave it a "geek" distro. But the veterans on the board are confident that there will be a solution and that gentoo is not in any sort of trouble and will be around a long time.

Our sql database is hosted on a separate server from the rest of the board. It appears there were some memory issues that caused the server to crash. osuosl has now set up a backup server so that we shouldn't have issues with that again.

Greg2 sent me a pm and helped me out with it. It turns out the firmware was already there. All I had to do was use modprobe then go into mcc and set it up. Then I went into wireless network, it scanned and found my network and then it was up and running. Oh and I had to remove the windows driver.
wireless stopped working again [solved]
