  1. In my experience frontpage doesn't add any unneeded code except the header...I use it because I use tables in my site...and I don't know the HTML for them...don't care...and it'd take time to get them the right size...I've edited my frontpage code in Notepad, and noticed nothing really bad...and frontpage is a lot better than the linux progs I've tried because you can do the edit, HTML, or preview...never used preview, but the HTML is very helpful. Now, I'd never even THINK about using word...simply because it's not an HTML editor...and it sucks at text, which is what it's MADE for...but frontpage is fine by me...I totally revamp my site every few months...and frontpage also makes it easy to simply change the page and re-save it...use the same layout for everything... *shudder* I'm starting to sound like an M$ ad...but seriously...I think frontpage was one of the few decent..or even GOOD things to come from M$...that and the X-Box :-P
  2. hmm...if it would run on this crap comp, I might...I don't really like that subscribe thing either...since that's the kind of game you play a few months...quit...come back next month, play a week or two...quit...you friend gets it, you play because of that together a few weeks...quit...get an email with a free trial...play until that ends...quit...come back.... so yea...if it wasn't a subscribe game, I definatly would...as it is, I would buy it...play out the trial it comes with (err...should...I hope...since normal EQ did)...then buy another month...then put it on my rack of games...where it would fall off because there isn't enough room anyways...sit on the floor a while...then get thrown in a drawer to be never seen again :-P
  3. Just wondering if there's any way to get the windows fonts in Linux...it's really annoying that the windows fonts don't work in GAIM and stuff...and obviously the linux fonts don't work for other ppl...Is there like, a special port of them for linux, or some linux prog that'll port them or something? Also, if it's not, like, an RPM, or some prog that you just kinda click import fonts or something...I need to know how to install them... :-P
  4. here's what I want to do. Take a program I wrote, a DOS console .exe, and put it on a floppy so it'll run when the comp is booted...is that possible?
  5. no...I want something that I can make a bootable img file from data on my hard drive...
  6. Just wondering how you make a floppy .img file...I know how to do a CD img or ISO...but not a floppy one...and I'd LIKE it to run when the comp is started...like a boot disc...it can be a windoze on linux prog...doesn't really matter (that's why this is in OT instead of Software)

    gaim and yahoo

I'm in US and it doesn't work for me either...
  8. Yea...windoze XP lets you choose though...and someone on the windoze forums said windoze 98 would too...stupid luser... :P
  9. Aight, I recently had to reinstall windoze...long story short, I was attempting to install it to a different partition, to copy it to a CD, to make a live CD, to help my gf whose sister screwed over her laptop...problem is, it didn't let me choose the partiton (not really a problem...just installed windoze 98 SE over windoze 98 SE :P)...but it screwed up my boot menu thing...so yea...I need to restore lilo...from windoze...how? I know there's probably already a topic on this, but I tried doing a search here...but couldn't find anything...and was a bit too lazy to sort though all of 'em I hate M$ [<- wee...head slamming in unison!] [edit] YES! I ALMOST FORGOT! I HAVE MORPHIX!!!!! It may run slower...but it's still Linux! Better than being stuck on Windoze...
  10. a ) I got a custom built DELL...still sucks b ) last 'preformance model' I saw was $400...I don't think that's gonna be a top of the line computer there... c ) my mom wasn't willing to go over $1500...and I never thought of building one myself...mainly because that was before I knew of pricewatch.com
  11. lol...yea...but a n00b isn't gonna do that stuff...they're gonna stick with the desktop mostly...
  12. That's actually quiet fun...I do that all the time...unmount stuff...remount it...try to move it around...try to resize it...try to make new partitons... none of it ever does anything...except once...I unmounted something...and it crashed the comp...but when I booted back up it was fine :-P Linux is n00b-proof :-P
  13. UGH! I HATE DELL! About a month after we got our new DELL comp, I was back on the 4 year old compaq...DELLs SUCK! Had to call tech support about 5 times because it broke...every time they tried to blame it on a virus...we use 3 antivirus progs, all regularly updated. Our modem doesn't work, so we had to switch to cable internet (which we were planning on anyways...but not for a few months)...The only OS choice they gave us was windoze XP...most, if not all of you, know how I feel about that...ONE WEEK after our waranty expired, our hard drive got fried...cost $100 to replace...our old Gateway (about 7 years ago) had some problem and had to get the motherboard replaced...they sent us one free...about a year after the waranty expired. I have emailed and called them for tech support at least 30 times, not one of which I got a working answer to...the keyboard they sent us broke within a few months...not to mention they use the cheapest parts I've ever seen...the hard drive was Western Digital...I look on pricewatch for hard drives, that's always the cheapest one there... so yea...I'm not happy about this...especially if it's as 'good' as their computers and tech support...
  14. I personally have been on linux about 3 weeks now...never looked on the site or anything for any info...knew about partitons, but didn't need to...the only problem I have with linux is that the 'taskbar' type thing in IceWM or windowmaker doesn't have all the progs...even run program in GNOME doesn't have all of them...that and software installation are the only things I see making linux much different (based on looks and fell) than windoze...
  15. WOW that reminds me so much of windows 95...ahhh, the good 'ol days (yea...that wasn't that long ago to most of you...but for me it was, like, more than half my life :-P)
  16. First of all..I don't drink coffee...it's nasty :-P Secondly, windoze is usually the same way...ppl just don't wait that long...give it 10-20 minutes, and it'll come back. Yep! I used a mac once in a store, because the guy had never even seen the camera I wanted, but they apparently had some, so I had to look it up on their site...when I walked away I was dizzy and stuff...it was weird...and the mouse only had one button! I need AT LEAST 4! I usually use the mouse for 8 things in first person games...and I'm considering looking in all directions one thing...not that that would matter, since the only games for mac are, like, breakout...I swear...Linux has more games than that POS. I have a friend who has a mac...only 1 CD drive...no burner...didn't even come with a word processor...he has to go to his grandparents house to type stuff...
  17. I don't mean installing too much junk...I mean too much junk running in the BG...I've had linux crash because I've had too much running...a terminal, mozilla, and AIM...and it crashed...Now, I am quite low on RAM, but still...people want an OS that does everything for them...if linux does that, it'll have too much running in the BG, and it will crash. If I CTRL-ALT-DEL everything, I can keep a windows system running for months at a time, with no problems. It's just the mass of everything going at once that makes it crash so easily.
  18. Can't find anything there....
  19. ahhh...right...forgot about the whole theory of linux and GPL and stuff for a minute there... still though...more people working on it, more junk thrown in to 'make life easier'...no matter how stable the OS is, if it gets too junked up, the comp will crash...it's just a question of if it'll be hardware or software problems. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! win XP sucks! Here's my list of OSs: 1. Linux 2. Win 9x 3. DOS 4. NONE 5. Mac 6. Win XP Win XP is the WORST OS in existance! I've got games that have worked on every version since NT...and they don't work on XP...I have yet to install a game or hardware that doesn't need a patch. My digital cameras don't work at all. My printer does not work at all...we had to buy a new printer simply because of XP. I have yet to have 'compatability mode' work for anything. I've got a keyboard and mouse that won't work either! Every time I put a floppy in that comp it says it's corrupted. Not to mention the fact that it's ugly as hell. I found that many probs with winXP...with win98...uh...none that I know of. Sorry for that rant...but I have nothing but pure hatred for winXP...THAT is why I hate microshaft...which is why I got Linux.

    BITTORRENT

I've never actually used it myself, but I've DLed it, and my friend has it, so I know a decent amout about it. It is similar to Kazaa and other p2p clients, but works totally differently. First, you have to find a site to download a torrent file (such as the mandrake files). After that is downloaded, you open it with the bit torrent program...and I believe that runs it...but I'm not totally sure on any of that...
  21. I personally think Linux being behind is a good thing. M$ used to be good...then it got big...got an ego the size of the galaxy, and now it's earned the title microshaft. I fear that this may happen to Linux too, should it get that big...as long as it's gotta be good to be used, it will be good...the minute it becomes the dominant OS, all that crashes like windoze XP. It can't run the games? Good. Keep the gamers off it. Let them deal with the crashing...If you try to make Linux run all those games, all the capabilites of windoze, then it will also inherit all the crashing of windoze. IMHO, what keeps linux good is that it's a low system stress, very bare, clean, OS...not what people want...people want an OS that does EVERYTHING for them...linux does that, linux gets cluttered...and then it crashes.
  22. Yes, I realize this, but my theory is, by the time I do that, I'll think 'WTF am I doing???'...It takes longer to shut down progs running in the BG under linux than it does in windoze... I got squidGuard installed (found my mandrake CDs)...but I get the following error: 2004-02-07 11:45:41 [3623] squidGuard: can't write to logfile /var/log/squidGuard/log/squidGuard.log 2004-02-07 11:45:41 [3623] squidGuard: can't open configfile /etc/squidGuard/squidGuard.conf but I think it still runs...not totally sure though... I also installed DansGuardian...but I don't know the command to run it...I tried DansGuardian, dansguardian, and stuff like that, but it doesn't work...so I'm gonna have to go back into RPMdrake and find the file name sometime... [edit] I found it...it's in /usr/sbin ...but it still doesn't work... [urza9814@localhost urza9814]$ su Password: [root@localhost urza9814]# /usr/sbin/dansguardian Error reading custom image file: /etc/dansguardian/transparent1x1.gif Error creating connection to test proxy
  23. Yea...I already DLed it...but I'm having a heck of a time getting the other required stuff installed... :S
  24. I DLed it an everything...but it didn't work...something with perl...so i think I don't have a new enough version...so I DLed a newer version...and it's a .tar file...not .tar.gz or .tar.bz2, but just .tar ...so, this is probably in the FAQ, but I can't find it...so...how do I use that?
