  1. Yea, I know, but he's decent at programming (VB, Java, learning Python, etc..) and he already uses litestep, so I figure he won't have many problems. I'm having a problem getting it installed though. When I try to resize the windozs partition (through both use extra space and custom options) it says 'ntfsresize failed...' '...cluster accounting failed' And, knowing Linux can't read NTFS, I tried partitioning with Boot It NG...and it sat there for about an hour...and apparently did nothing. So anyone know of a way to do this? And another note about the music...when he said look it up in CDDB...he apparently meant the individual songs. He says WMP has an option called 'get file info' or something that will look it up and give a few choices...I guess it uses the file name or tags or something....but that's what he wants, if possible.
  2. Ok...I'm converting my bro to Linux, and I realized this morning, as my mom was yelling at me because the printer wasn't working, that I'm gonna need some way to print. The printer is an HP PSC 1350, and I found a 1300 driver that I'm gonna hope works, but the problem is how do I set it up so the windozs comp can still print to it? Would that use CUPS or what? 3. Grip, XMMS, Rhythmbox (especially) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> XMMS? I don't think you're quite understanding what he needs...I mean automatically do that...not manually.
  4. Hey, my bro has been having MASSIVE problems with his XP...he never takes care of it and it takes about a half hour to boot up...so I was talking to him about Linux (long story...started out about some new programming book he got...python or something) and anyways, he said he wanted it...but he needs some good programs first. So I'm looking for: Replacement for Soundforge and/or Acid Pro Way to play Everquest? I know it's probably not possible (well, for free...), but I figured I'd mention it... Music program. This is the big one. He WANTS: 1) look up music on CDDB 2) take the music, once found, and put in the proper tags and rename the actual file to a certain format 3) show the album art and stuff He currently uses ITunes...so if there's a port of that or something similar, that should be ok...or some way to make that run... Oh, and is 10.1/10.2 a large step up from 9.2? I only tried 10.0 CE...and it didn't seem much different, except it ran really slow on my 667. Just wondering if it's worth re-downloading all the ISOs for, or if I should just keep with 9.2 for now.
  5. Is there a way I can, like, decompile a Win32 .pif file with mandrake? See, my friend got this virus...really bad apparently...and he knew exactly where it was from...so obviously the first thing I did was ask the link, the second was boot to linux and DL it :P and now, I want to get a look at it...so, any way I can do that, or was that pretty much pointless?
  6. I couldnt' get 10.0 to run decent on my 667 with 64MB RAM...took literally over 10 minutes to load OOo...and I tried IceWM, Windowmaker, and Fluxbox. 9.2 however ran faster than Win98 (what the comp was 'designed for')
  7. Hey, I got a friend who wants to try Linux on a comp he just got...200MHz, 92MB RAM, 5GB hdd...He's got Damn Small Linux running on it right now, but is having a hell of a time...all kinds of trouble...stuff not being there and such since it's made to be small...the problem is he has dial-up, so he's gonna have to buy for it...cant' DL and try 'em out first...so I was thinking Slackware or Mandrake 8.2...mandrake would probably be better because it seems to be easier...and I could help him with it...but anyways, what do you think woudl run best? edit: hmm, according to amazon, 9.2 will run...says 64 required, 128 recomended...anyone have any experience with running 9.2 on 92 or lower RAM? Will it still run decent? ..wait...my odl comp only had 64MB...and it ran fine...but it was 667mhz...so...will it run decent on 200MHz? lol [moved from Other Linux Distributions by spinynorman]
  8. I can't afford to spend that much on a graphics card! I only spent $50 on the one I have! :-P
  9. err...I don't use alsa...I use OSS...according to Harddrake...lol I was using emu10k1 before and it didn't work...then I reinstalled mandrake...and found the new audigy choice...so I used it...and it worked...so...I'm using OSS. Like I said, it kinda works, but the back speakers are too quiet and the center just gets static
  10. uhh...no...there isn't a checkbox labeled advanced... I was screwing with the drivers and I got all but the center working...but the back 2 are really quiet, so... Also, using Xine or Totem set to 5.1 doesn't change anything.
  11. aurgh...I tried to install it from a different comp...and now im beginning to think the CD is screwed up... :S
  12. errr....and where would I find that? If it's in MCC, I failed to find it...if it's in the media player itself, im using XMMS, and I can't seem to find it there either.
  13. Ok...I dunno why...most likely the driver...but I dunno what driver to use then...anyways...my Creative Soundblaster Live! soundcard only outputs teh main 2 channels of the 6...and...even if I found the right driver...I wouldn't know how to install it...so any assistance there would be much appriciated...here's my haddrake info: seems like it's detecting it ok...except for the 5.1 part...will that even work at all in linux? (if not that's ok...my speakers can fix that decently)

    Gratitude

Doesn't matter if you can't answer any questions...just look at me! :P you'll have some questions of your own that aren't yet answered soon enough...lol
  15. lol...I can't ditch windoze though...my mom will kill me (not to mention the few games I play on it...I would get cedega, but after that time demo thing that couldn't run a single game.....) and it's not a new feature in 10.1...I'm using 9.2 :-P but Im thinking it's harddrive failure...
  16. Yea...the only hardware I've heard of that doesn't work well is ATI...and I got a Radeon 9200 that never required any configuration at all...it just works. My soundcard doesn't...but...I never attempted to fix that yet...lol...it's a soundblaster live! 5.1, so...my built in mobo sound works though :-P
  17. No, windows is on lilo, but when I select it, I just get a black DOS-type screen (you know the one...it pops up while windoze boots for a second....with the blinking cursor...)... and now I can't install again...well, I can't install without formatting my hard drive...which would mean I'd need to get my backups back offa linux, which would mean I'd have to reinstall lilo, which is what screwed this all up the first time. I was just thinking though...even though it worked the first time...and I can still access it through Linux (well, last time I checked)...could it be a hard drive failure? I mean, I'm using a 5 year old 15GB compaq hdd...was never top of the line to begin with...so...that a possibility?
  18. I spent a few hours yesterday and the day before, and the past 4 hours today trying to fix windoze because my mom needs it to check her email and do her taxes and crap...all that time...finally got it fixed...it booted up fine, I went to reinstall Lilo, and guess what? once I did that it set me right back to where I started. And I also have discovered that the 'restore windows bootloader' option on the rescue function of the mandrake CD doesn't do a damn thing. You hit it, you select a lilo, and it sends you back to the list without doing a single damn thing. This will be the fourth time I've installed Windoze today, and I've done Linux 3 (and believe I'll have to do that once more to fix this too...)...and I am so mad right now...I had it! :angry2: I'm not even gonna attempt to reinstall the bootloader if I get it fixed again...I can't deal with this crap for another week or two...I'd rather deal with the trouble of running windoze for now.
  19. Is there any way to make Lilo boot from CD? It only gives me the hd options when I try to make a new entry with MCC. See, my windoze died...and my mom is about to kill me...it crashed halfway through the reinstall, and now whenever I try again I get a BSOD...and even teh M$ newsgroup can't help. Even reformatting the drive didn't do anything! So I was gonna install '98, but the CD don't boot right...but I think if I force it it might work...soo...how do I do that? ...if I only had a floppy drive, this would be soo much easier... :( speaking of which...would it be possible to fake a floppy drive (new partition somewhere) and set some way for lilo to boot that? hmm...
  20. because it's FAT and eats a lotta resources? Ooh! and the only thing the CDs are good for is makin' burgers (how you'd use a CD to make burgers I don't know, but I'm sure there's a way :P)
  21. Wow, yours works that well??? I thought they called it RG because it worked better! :P heh...mine is currently being bad...I'mma have to give it a time out...lol Winblows died. While trying to reinstall it, I got an error with ntdll.dll. I removed my slave drive (had this problem before) and it worked. The install crashed. I have the same problem now, but my slave drive is still unplugged. I plug the slave drive back in (why not...)...still don't work. I try Linux, and my X won't boot now. So now I'm sitting here on Morphix trying to find something on google...lol
  22. I didn't...mine just works... :P
  23. heh, I've seen that soo many times... and it's still funny :-P
  24. might be possible to just set it up as a second hard drive, but it might be fried...that happened to one of mine once...if that's the problem you might try the freezer trick...but that's all I can think of...might not be able to get it.
  25. Ok, this comp has two mice...only one at a time though, as both are PS/2...but it has a basic 5 year old wheel mouse (wired) and an optical 5 button (wireless) mouse. When I first got the big wireless one (came with a keyboard) it didn't work in Linux...only windoze...so I used the wired one my comp had. Well, I got my new comp and decided to try that mouse again...didn't even work in windoze this time...then about a week ago my old one just died...I tried everything I could think of...woudln't work in windoze or Linux...so I plugged in the wireless one...and it worked fine in both...and it was pretty good for about a week...then it just died...tried chaning the batteries...twice...tried hitting the connect button a buncha times in a buncha combinations...checked the cords...rebooted many times...nothing worked...so then I plugged the old one back in...and guess what? it works now...WTF!
