  1. Now, this is interesting, I noticed FireFox had a spell checker in 2006 Mandriva, what happened to it in 2007? How, if I can, get the Spell checker back?

    Windows XP version FireFox has it.... ???

  2. All of the sudden, sound Juicer Stops working, the only thing does is gives me this error message;

    Sound Juicer could not extract this CD.
    Reason: Could not link pipeline

    Link to pipeline? And why doesn't it work now? This happens on any audio CD I try to rip.

    Edit in; I'll try to expand on this a little. After installing Mandriva 2007, Sound Juicer running under KDE, worked just fine but stopped working without any notice. All other rippers works just fine.

  3. I did some programming for Indiana University physical plant and enjoyed it. Most of the work I have done was in MS DOS for data base handling. I also wrote some programs for figuring audio driver box volume and port sizes for speaker systems in VB for windows. Plus some simple games in DOS, I liked programing a lot but I never pursue it as a job. It was one of my many hobbies.

    I tell the nephew if he ever wanted to get into the hart of computing, he should get into programing. We have lots of computer users and users are a dime a dozen, programing is where it is.

  4. "CD Player" is an application in KDE 3.5. Mandriva 2007.

    CD player in KDE does not want to start. These are errors I get back;

    The CD player is unable to run correctly.

    Press 'Details' for more details on reasons for the failure.

    Press 'Set device' to go to a dialog where you can set the device, or press 'Quit' to quit the CD player

    If I choose "Details" then I get;
    The CD player is unable to run correctly.

    /dev/hdb does not appear to point to a valid CD device. This may be because:

    [a] CD support is not present in your machine

    You do not have the correct permissions to access the CD drive

    [c] /dev/hdb is not the CD drive.

    Press 'Set device' to go to a dialog where you can set the device, or press 'Quit' to quit the CD player

    If I press "Set device" then I get my CD-DVD rw, (Sony DVD RW DRU-800A) This device is set as root. It looks like the device is set but still no startup. KsCD works just fine... What's up?

  5. Right-click on a handle in the tray and Panel Menu -> Add Applet to Panel -> Storage Media. That way, when you insert a CD or connect e.g. a usb device, an icon should appears in the applet. Click that icon and enjoy.

    A different approach is also there. The command for the 'Devices' icon that worked in Mdv 2006 does not work in Mdv 2007 out of the box (nasty "bug"). You can fix this by using a right-click -> Properties -> Application and make the command:

    konqueror --profile system system:/media

    Hope that helps. :)

    I'm working on the first suggestion... I see what that does, fine. OK the second suggestion shows me the hard drive and all the partitions, that's cool, at least now I know where every thing is and the partition sizes.

    Great! :thumbs:

  6. Another interesting note; If I include that same file in a play list, and if other files follow, then it plays all the way through.

    Just this one file does this, all the others are fine.

  7. Ok neddie, Cross-fading is off.

    Here is a sort of a foot note; I burned a CD including that file and the track plays just fine. So at least I know the file is ok.

  8. I have been using Amarok to organize my music for about a year now. Amarok has done a splended job so far.

    However, I have ran into one track that will not play to the end on Amarok. The Audio file (flac) is 3:41 long (24.4mb) Amarok will play the file to 3:38 then stops. The source CD will play all the way through on KsCD and on Sound Juicer. I use Juicer and Konqueror extract the track but no difference. Any ideas what's going on here?

  9. I just want to add the advantage for having Windows on one drive and Linux on the other is; if Windows blows the drive, for some unknown reason, then you don't lose Linux on that same drive. Also, on a partitioned drive, Windows doesn't even know the Linux partition exists. So I think a two drive dual boot would be ideal. I have been dual booting with Linux (lilo) with no problems with a partitioned drive as well.

  10. As far as I know, there is no way to swap the stereo channels. That is hard wire on the sound card or hardware. I suppose a clever coder could write a driver to do this through software, but as you can imagine would screw up any application with a balance control. Now if some how if the analog leads from the CD or DVD player/writer got plugged in wrong, then you might have switch LR channels. That is if you are using analog, just about all OS use the WAV output today for audio CD playback.

  11. Well, here's the end of this story, downloaded the Mandriva 2007 and fixed my flac file problem and then some. Any one surprised? Never really got to the bottom of why I could not burn audio CDs using flac files. At this point upgrading to Linux 2007 was a good deal for me.

    So now this problem is moot, not solved, but moot.

    Thanks for those who tried to help, greatly appreciated. :thanks:

  12. Speaking of VHS v. Betamax, Sony let go of the VHS patent just about when they introduced Betamax. Sony held on the patent on the VHS mechanism or tape transporter only-- for years. Betamax was to elevate Sony back on top of the market with the claim of better performance, reliability and cost. In reality, the machine was costly to repair, performance was about the same and the price of the Betamax VCR was higher. Other manufactures already had large investments in VHS VCRs. The movie rental business liked VHS because VHS tape, unlike Betamax, was less likely to get damaged by the playback machine, because of the lengthy tape path in Betamax. I think that more then anything brought down Betamax.

    As far as Linux v. Windows? Marketing. I have always said marketing, the product must be in public view, and a consistent product. I have known about M$ for years, among other operating systems. Linux was introduced to me by word of mouth, my brother (Ix) Word of mouth takes a long time to spread. :P

  13. It didn't, This thread was a request for a little more understanding and help on compiling in Linux. I download K3B 1.0 RC4. , compiled it, and it works, that part was a success but the new version K3B STILL will not handle FLAC audio files. Yes, I still have the FLAC problem but a successful compile. So, at least, I'm done with this thread.

    Now, the next step is to up grade to Mandriva 2007, I downloaded it last night. As soon as get some blank DVDr's I can burn it in Windows and then do the up grade.

  14. After reading this article, this reminded of the long ago fight between Bill Gates and Steven Jobs, Mac and M$ Windows, over Bill stealing Mac's GUI. Apple or Mac hand the first GUI on the Market while M$ was still DOS at the prompt. M$ Windows came later but not too far behind other "windowing systems". It was really an application rather than a full OS. Mac and others like the Atari 68000 running OS9 for example, were true OS.

    Mostly what I got out of this article Is the "Look and feel" of windows in other windowing systems, like KDE for example looks most like Windows. I personally like GUI's, I had my fill of the DOS prompt years ago. Most of the Apps I wrote Were GUIs for DOS.
