might this be better put in the "tips and tricks"?
just a thought :)
edit: did this get moved or was i lost when i posted that? ^

did you install the nvidia drivers?
-
ooohh...ok, i wasn't sure since the topic said gedit and the post said jedit.
with a .src.rpm you have to rebuild it, although I'm not sure how to do that. doing a search in this forum for "rebuilding src rpms" or the like may turn up an answer.

do you know what port VNC uses?
if so, make sure that port is open. that's my only guess, as I've never used guarddog since it's KDE based.
-
do you want gedit?
because if gedit is what you want, just open up a terminal, su to root, and type "urpmi gedit"
it should then ask for one of the install cd's (probably cd 2)

i also signed up.

my mobo is an ECS K7S5A, althought doing cat /var/log/dmesg | grep dma didn't return anything, i just looked in the file manually and found:
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xff00-0xff07, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA ide1: BM-DMA at 0xff08-0xff0f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
I would assume that means DMA is enabled.

looks like when they wrote it they were using an older version of gcc. not sure what to tell you :-/ maybe contact the person/people who wrote it and ask them for a fix? :-/

post your error messages, someone might be able to find the problem.

counterspy is right, the only PPC (powerpc, aka mac) version of Mandrake is 8.2. You can find it on the downloads page.
although I heard somewhere that they are working on a new PPC version.

and what happened to irc.openprojects.net ??????
changed their name. irc.freenode.net is what it is now.

9.1 Best distro? I thought 9.0 was supposed to be the same thing a while back...
first off, it's not done yet, second off, the newest version will always be hailed as the best by someone, somewhere. that's how it is..... :)

install the nvidia drivers, the instructions for them are on the nvidia page. you shouldn't have to do anything else, just installing the drivers works for me
my setup: AMD XP 1600+ w/Geforce 4 ti4200, and previously a Geforce 2 GTS
i've never had to recompile the kernel, but the nvidia drivers definitely do make a difference in various areas :)
hope thats what you needed to know!

just wondering, does Linux work w/DVI-out? my video card has a DVI connector, and I was considering buying a flat panel which uses DVI.
would this be a safe move, and is there anything in specific I would need to do since my system is currently setup to use the VGA connector on a normal CRT?

try pressing page up...? or if you have a mouse scroll scroll up w/the mouse.

Actually, I was interested in Unreal II being released this Feb 6.
from what i understand there won't be. seem since it's not multiplayer and they don't need linux servers to run it's servers, they aren't going to give it to us.

i forgot :D
no worries, i do it all the time.

you have to be root to install RPMs
just su to root at a terminal. (type "su", hit return, enter root password, hit return)

Does the DVD drive use DMA access?
I believe so, why?
-
did you try webmin? i've never done samba, so this is just a shot in the dark.
point the browser on the mdk box to https://127.0.0.1:10000

i think I have a different problem w/ogle. it seems to be trying to open the alsa audio driver, but i have an audigy, which I believe uses OSS, not alsa.
Xine is using Xv, according to the config file in my home directory.
