    X server startup

ummm... are you trying to configure your multimedia keys on your k/b? I was under the impression xbindkeys runs anyway! Well, if it doesn't, you would add "xbindkeys" to the end of your ~/.xinitrc (where ~ is /home/mahiles, you can just type ~) $ echo xbindkeys >> ~/.xinitrc
  2. Yeah; but as if they want to look like idgits!
  3. I totally agree with that point. The linux updates include xsane and xpdf, etc. The windows updates include *some, but not nearly as many software updates (as opposed to OS updates)
  4. S#!t, you know, if we all start buying shares...
  5. I was j/k about the confusion part (well, I'm @ work, so I can't try it..) Thank you both very much! Xmms just moved up a notch in the 'useful' category :D

    Musik

There is an alternative to the currently stagnant rhythmbox called musik. Note that I was the one who wanted to create my own media player, so now I'm not sure if I'll join one or fork one (the latter still looking like the best choice to include everything I really want). But in the meantime, this player looks great!
  7. That would probably be because no one has too many complaints about it - it isn't by any one evil company, and the time it would take to make an effective virus that could somehow get to root via your user would probably take 100x longer than a nice worm that disables many windows machines in seconds!!!
  8. not that I know anything about nfs, but from what I do know about mount syntax, wouldn't -t (for filesystem type) be nfs (or maybe the actual fs type on the remote partition?) and some other switch would be used to give the mount command the IP?

    SoundBlaster Audigy2

sounds good - you positive it's not muted by accident?

    MP3 player

I have the samsung yepp 30-sh (128 MB) which is awesome - except I haven't figured out whether or not I can use it in linux yet :( Any of the mp3 players will play mp3pro's, which is good because they're about half the size, but Ogg's are the $#!T as you say :) Try to find one that acts like a storage device, usb2 for faster file transfers, and ogg capabilities. Then you'll be happy!
  11. And you can play cd's?? (If not, why confuse the crap outta me? :?)
  12. (I'm @ work) but doesn't sys do it?
  13. Cool - thanks! I suppose you're using supermount and you configured the plugin to look at /mnt/cdrom as well?
  14. Yeah but how do you play a cd? I can't add cd songs to my playlist! Unless I'm doing something wrong <shrug>
  15. Awesome ! Between this and the howto in FAQ's I may get this working tonight!!
  16. Can anyone tell me how you properly get xmms to play cd's?? I've had so much trouble trying to figure this out! I know this: [*]Start xmms [*]Configure the cd plugin to point to (is it /dev/cdrom or /mnt/cdrom??) [*]Now what???!!?!?! TIA guys!
  17. Did you read this How to Dual Boot? It might contain something helpful! ;)
  18. Let's not go assuming the oracle and the rest use the same OS for their webserver as their development OS though Gowator!.... Could very well be different!

    No Doom III in 2003

Still - have you seen that new vid? Crazy - it will be scary! Watching something is totally different that sneaking around a corner trying not to let your shadow give you away.. ,low on ammo/health and BANG!! you walk into a revenant's chest!! EEEK!!! Whoever questions doom 3 or quake 4 having linux installs know this: Carmack is no M$ lover and dedicates all of his talent to cross-platform play. The console in play is a bash prompt, pretty much. id are big linux fans, that's why they open source their game engines.
  20. Wouldn't it need to return a 0 to print out Program Exec Failed in your 2nd to last post?

    Remaining hardware..

The mouse should be easy (are you talking about mouse wheel or an actual middle button?) Have you checked in the peripherals section of "Configuration" under the KDE menu? Read this for keyboards Cheers and Good luck!
  22. I seriously find that re-compiling your kernel for use with OSS sound is worth it for 9.1 - it's the best OS I've ever used, no guff.
  23. I answered yes despite not having gone yet. The OCLUG here in Ottawa had Alan Cox speak last summer at their "Linux in the wild" outdoor bar-b-que and I meant to go this year's last week but only remembered it around 8pm (damn!) so I'm going for sure to next month's meeting.
  24. It's a 333 MHz ? Could be, not too sure. Mine takes about 10 seconds from the time the bootsplash goes off and I can type in my password, but I'm running a 733
