Your mic is ENABLED in the mixer settings? I know on some distro's, I've read of the soundcard settings being muted or unchecked by default. Been there, dun that, on a older distro, I spent hours trying to figure out what the prob was, and it ended up being an unchecked mic in the mixer for Alsa.

I dare say that with 1gb of pc2100 on my AMD system, Mandrake 9.2 seems faster than the XPPro over on the fast hard drive side of this dual booter.
