Hi guys, I'm at a mates place configuring his computer and I've lost his "start Icon" the equivalent to M$ Start button. I cannot get it back. Can someone help me please as he is needing this computer to get his work done!!!!

Thanks mate. I had actually done that the other day however the client computer would get stuck at the mounting NFS at startup and not move. I would have to shut down the server and start the client 1st and then start the server. I figured I must have done something wrong and so I undid it all. I'll give it another go! Thanks for your help!!

Hi again, Can anyone tell if there is a way of automounting a directory on a server to my box (the client) every time I start up my box??? If so, would you mind spelling it out for me?? Thanks again

Hi, I am setting up a mandrake box for a friend and he asked me if I can change the desktop a bit. I am running kde and he asked if I could change the writing under the CD rom and Floppy to just "Cdrom" + "Floppy" instead of /mnt/dev/cd0 or whatever is normal. Is there a way?? thanks

Sorry to let the team down after all your hard work, but I could'nt get the module to compile if that is the lingo. Otherwise, 2.6 is speeding along except for one strange thing. The CPU is operating at 99% the entire time even when the complete computer is idle. Any ideas as to what that may be???????????

Wine may be an option, but everytime that I have used it, it just never seems to work. Maybe thats my ignorance though. As far as I know, you cannot import it into those progs. But the truth is I hav'nt actually tried YET! It is just what I have been told. Thanks for the options so far that you have offered.

Hmmm! Does anyone know if there is a software program for Linux/Mandrake which is compatible with Quicken or Quickbooks??? I have converted a sick and tired M$ user but he needs to operate that program for his business. Win4lin is a possibilty, I know, but he is a moron with anything slightly technical! An icon on the desktop is the solution that I am hoping for. Thanks for any ideas!

Sorry Fuzz baby, you have misunderstood me. The mandrake box is the server and the gateway. The win2k box has to get on the net through the server! It can't! On the club forum, a guy there said that it is my shorewall setup not Samba. So I am looking at that!! Thanks.

bvc Do I have to unzip that vanilla kernel and install it first, then boot into it BEFORE doing the make menuconfig thing??

If you read my signature you will then understand the type of newbie that I am!!!!!!!!! I tried the -export IGNORE thing, and it did blurb out a heap of stuff on the screen but the majority of what I could read made me feel that it did not succeed! Anyway I changed the driver source in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to "nvidia" BUT x couldn't start because of an incorrect nvidia module setup or something top that effect Have I made an obvious blunder or do you have any ideas as to what I might do from here???? 2.6 is a LOT faster on my machine! You should see how fast I'm typing now just trying to keep up!!!

Hi I'm back again after spending the last four days getting a network together. I've still got the mail server to setup. Boy this proved to me how much I don't know!!! Now with the 2.6 kernel. I have everything working except the nvidia 3d driver! I d/l everything and read the readme. But upon "make install" I got a warning something like "This kernel has been compiled with a different compiler than this driver. If you know what you are doing use the ignore_CC_Mismatch option" I tried that too but it just plugged out a whole lot more options that I could use. Any answers???????????????????????????

Hi, I have a network set up now with a server acting as a gateway to the net. I have a win 2k box on that network which is able to access all the boxes on the network. BUT I cannot get the win2k box to be able to share the internet connection. I have tried setting up MS Explorer with the squid proxy settings but to no avail. Then I set up the gateway settings on the win2k box for the server. But I still cannot share the internet connection. Any ideas would be very welcomed as my oldest kid is starting to get on my nerves hassleing me with "Are we on the net yet Dad?" Thanks

OK I had shorewall set up on both my Mandrake boxes, which led me to drop the one which was a client. Everything seems to be working now on the two Mandrake boxes but I CANNOT get the win2k box on the net! The win2k box can see all the computers in network neighbourhood and acces them all including the server. I have the proxy settings correct in Internet Explorer, but it just can't get on. It goes to connect, says it found the site, but just fails to connect. I have the understanding that the win2k box connect to the network via samba. But how does it share an internet connection?????????????????????????? Thanks

Thanks I'll give it a go gowator! I do seem to have it up and running now, but it is a little sloooow! My setup is. The server is a gateway to the net via a usb adsl modem. It runs on a eciadsl driver and doesn't even show up as a eth(anything) I then have one nic for the network going through the switch with the other 5 boxes hooked up to that. As I understand what you have said, I should not fit into the classification that you spoke about. Is that right?? The immediate problem that I had was the static address on the server (I think) I changed it from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.2 I made the gateway on the other boxes 192.168.0.2. Then, the problem seemed to be the squid proxy settings. I fiddled around with them, and bingo, it is working. NOW, I have to work out how to access the server from my other mandrake box as I want to be able to save, write files to the server from my other mandrake box as well as update via urpmi as well. Can I do that or am I 'dreamin'??? Then, after all that..... a mail server. God help me! and you guys too hopefully!!! thanks so far

Router??? I don't have a router. I have a 8 port switch. I thought that that was all that I needed. Mmmm, I noticed within the settings of squid or the dhcp settingsthere was a setting that asked "do you want this to act as a router" Mightthat work?? The squid proxy setup is confusing too but I am reading up a bit on that. Does anyone know where there is some tutorial on setting up a dhcp network. Be buggered if I can find one. Thanks so far.

I have tried unsuccessfully, to set up a dhcp server giving out tcp/ip addresses to 5 computers on my home network. The server is also the gateway to the internet. One box runs Mandrake 9.2 the server also is running that, and the rest are running win 98 and 2000. I have tried using drakwizard which says that I have been successful insetting up a dhcp server. Nope, doen't work! I have tried using webmin, but again it doesn' t work! I don' t really know what I am doing although I have some basic understanding. I have set up the server with a static ip of 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 Yet within webmin, it says I have a subnet of 10.0.0.0 ????????????????? At this stage dhcp server started but the rest of the boxes didn't get their tcp/ip addresses. So, I changed the subnet from 10.0.0.0. to 192.168.1.1 and now the dhcp server won't even start! I wanted the domain to be called kowbouys but it called it localhost. HELP I am getting brain addled. I have been at this for 3 days. If you can at least send me to a tutorial I will be pleased, but I canot even find one of those.
