  1. I am after an analogue video capture program. I just hav'nt found anything that does the job well yet. I have a Winfast 2000XP Capture card which does a great job for the price but if I want to capture at full resolution in Mandrake I am getting pretty poor results. I have tried Mythtv which captures really good, but you can't do much with what you capture because the format is so weird. I have also tried xawdecode which isn't bad but for some reason the audio is just terrible regardless of what settings I use. Can someone enlighten me as to any other progs out there that may exist?? I basically want to capture video to edit and/or make DVD's or Svcd's Thanks
  2. k3b version 3.13 will record DVD's but I am not sure about -DVDs as mine is a +DVD. I have done a few with it with no problems at all. Good Luck
  3. Hi, Can someone tell me if it is possible to access mldonkey which is installed on my 9.2 server, from a networked win98 box????????? If so what do I need? Thanks guys
  4. Firstly thanks for the reply! I was using Alsa in the 2.4 kernel with the 1712 ice driver. The soundcard is a Hoontech dsp "something??" I had no hassles at all with the 2.4 kernel fom install onwards. I just assumed that the 2.6 would 'borrow' all that info from the previous kernel. I am obviously mistaken! What do you think might cause it??
  5. I have installed the 2.6 kernel and /dev/dsp is no longer there?? Therefore I have no sound. Does anyone know a workaround for this or a site specifically designed for 2.6 in Mandrake? Thanks for any help.
  6. Hey Thanks for the replies!!! May I ask another possibly stupid question??????????????? If I was to dl a kernel src rpm. Can I recompile it in the same way as I would a program RPM??? This may be way off but I am trying to work myself out of the newbieville haze!
  7. Brucer45 As I have stated I am away from my computer for the next week but already I have had a call from my son who has said "Dad I can't get on the net!" And so I had to talk him through urpme and then urpmi of squid! And off she goes again. You mentioned a few good points that I had'nt thought of. Logging for instance. What is it's allowable size?? And how is it defined? How can I check it?? The ACL has been set to 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0 which I understand to mean the entire network range, is that correct? It has been set up via the drakconf wizard. The last question I have is. How can shorewall act like this?? It works perfectly for a period of time and then just won't allow access to any client computer. Can you enlighten me on this one?? I just figured that shorewall either would or wouldn't work. Thanks for anymore info you can share for me on this one.
  8. Thanks for the ideas BUT>During the time that you cannot reach the net, you also cannot stop squid! I have tried numerous ways but none work! It just fails to stop. The other most obvious question is, "What proxy server do you use and is it better than squid?" And if so why?? I am definitely open to any other ideas. Thanks
  9. Hi all, I have a continuing problem that has me bereft for ideas. Hopefully, you can help. I have a server running 9.2 connected to the net 24/7. IT is only running the most basic of services as it has no monitor to run and it is only serving as a dhcp, tcp/ip and ssh server. It runs squid as a proxy and shorewall as a firewall. Now the problem.... Everything runs like clockwork for about a day or so, and then I cannot access the net via squid from any client computer. I can clear the cache but it makes no difference. I can do a restart but it makes no difference. All I can do is uninstall squid and then reinstall it and it will work again. This has happened 3 times now over the last 4 days or so. Any ideas???? Thanks for any stabs in the dark or light!!
  10. I followed the link and advice in that article and it all works perfectly! Can someone tell me if I have this right please??? When you compile the source RPM's, are the resulting rpm's actually "designed" for you computer and hardware?? Is this what this process achieves? Therefore the computer will be much more stable and faster?? Is this right?? Thanks for any light shed on this.
  11. I am pretty much a newbie to Linux compared with a lot of you out there, and I thought that I'd post this to see what all of you think. "What do you think are the best programs that have been written for Linux??" In any catargory that you like. Personally, I would be lost without Xserver, Webmin, ssh, k3b for dvd burning. I am sure that there are many more great programs that I, and maybe many others don't even know about. So, what are your picks? By the way.........Happy new year!
  12. Thanks for that. I did get it going but I'll keep that info as it's good to know. Thanks
  13. I have just had to do a reinstall of Mandrake 9.2 for different reasons but when I go to double click on an 'RPM' I get "What program do you want to open this file with?" Can someone tell me what to do?? Thanks
  14. Wow you must only look about 56.   I'm old enough to laugh my head off when I watched a Simpsons episode where Bart had changed the music for the Church organist to "Inna Godda La Vida" My kids didn't getthe joke, but I was old enough to!! I'll have to try this xmms
  15. Yea Fair enough. You must be near my age if your digitizing the old vinyl!!! I went through the whole SVCD and DVD authoring trip in M$oft and learned heaps of stuff. I can make Svcd's look as good as DVD's minus the surround sound. As a matter of fact, I have a DVD burner, but if I was using window$, I would make svcds rather than DVDs. The quality is that marginal and I had the process down to a hit of a button and go to bed. I am hoping to be able to do the same in Linux eventually but there is so much to learn and understand. I have made a decision to persist with Linux even though going back to window$ is the easiest choice. I really have caught the Mandrake/Linux bug and think that it is the future of computers given time. Google may be my friend as you say, but I am sick of treading through 30 pages of unrelated crap trying to find something even nearing what you are after. But like the rest of the internet community, I continue to do so!! This forum has been great as I've learned heaps so far. But the whole video encoding thing, seems to be a bit harder than some other stuff.
  16. Hey Kuchwas, Thanks for that! I didn't know about either of those progs and have been frustrated with mythtv's nuv files for too long as well as other seemingly unrelated probs I have only when I have it up and running. I am trying xawdecode. Looks promising! I am just mucking around with it at the moment using gtranscode to convert with different codecs. Can you tell me what is the best codec to try to make svcds and or DVDs with Linux. AND is it even possible?? Thanks mate!
  17. Aussie John!! Can you explain what you mean and how I can change it to be there all the time even as a file browser?? Today, once again, I do the old right click, and it's gone again. It is very annoying.
  18. Hi again, I have a winfastxp 2000 video capture card. It basically has the brooktree bt878 chip. After spending days I have gotton Mythtv working but I still have an annoying problem. The picture that I get in Mandrake is second rate. It is quite interlaced and compared to winblows, not very good. It is the same in xawtv too. I have read around a few sites but I was hoping that someone here might know how to get the best out of this card in Linux as within Windows it performs very well. I can capture 720x576 (pal) without any dropped frames. I can do the same in Linux but the quality is not up to standard. I am sure that there must be a few tweaks to get the best out of the card. Does anybody know?? Thanks
  19. I have played with cinerella and all it did was cease up my computer. Not much confidence there! I did play with Main Actor a bit and it really looked the goods! You have to buy the new version but I think that you can still down, load an earlier version free from the mirrors!
  20. Yea, this is weird!! I have NEVER had copy on the right click menu in any version that I have had. I have had the same menu as "someone" here posted. But now when I tried the middle button idea, I right click and guess what???There is cut copy and paste!!!! You work it out.
  21. Hi again I have one small annoying issue with Konqueror that I am hoping someone will help me with?? While in Konqueror, if you right click on a file a small menu pops up and there is EVERYTHING on that menu except............COPY!!! I find it really annoying. Repeatedly, I do it only to have to press control c or go up to the menu and hit edit copy. Is there a way of getting copy onto that small menu?? Thanks if there is!!
  22. Thanks, I'm busy right now, I'll get back to you. Thanks for the help!!
  23. Hi again I have been running the 2.6 kernel for about 2 weeks now and have only just realised that I don't have video 4linux installed... I have a brooktree type card but vid 4 linux isn't even installed. Any help would be much appreciated!
  24. Thanks a lot guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This guy is in a desperate hurry to finish his stuff before Christmas and I am looking like a technical zombie!! Thanks for the speed of your replys Peppercorn!!!! PS At least I've converted on M$ user!!
