  1. Yes, but you won't be able to write to the NTFS partitions, only read. You can set up write access on FAT, though. I haven't found I really need write-access to my XP partition: I use it for storing things (papers, mp3s), and if I really need to change a file rather than just read it, I copy it to my Mandrake partition. If I want to eg. listen to an mp3 that's stored on the XP partition I can, just by pointing xmms to the relevant folder in Mandrake, just as I would if it were stored on the Mandrake partition. None of this requires booting into XP: Mandrake can mount the NTFS/FAT partitions in the same way as external drives (so they'll show up in /mnt along with /mnt/floppy etc).
  2. steve - Mandrake will take the spare space on the NTFS partition and partition it off and format it to its own requirements. Just make sure you have a large enough partition (NTFS, FAT or whatever) and then let Mandrake loose on it. Just don't forget: turn off swap and defrag the partition first or else...
  3. Cool. When you post again, if you do a longer list of sites we might be able to spot a link... Just to get this straight: certain sites are always slow, rather than sometimes they're slow and sometimes not?
  4. Not necessarily - sometimes there's a conflict with Linux (I had all sorts of fun with a different netgear). Just a thought: is this any use? Couple of things you can do if you really want to: 1) Does it work OK on Mandrake 10OE (ie is it a problem with 10.1)? 2) Does it work OK if you connect a single computer to the modem not via the router (ie is it a router or modem conflict)?
  5. Type? Running which version firmware? Have you downloaded the latest firmware for it (from the netgear site)? Make sure your firewall is turned off (mandrake control centre > security > firewall).
  6. Mandrake sets up another partition for itself during installation - what you do is tell it to take unused space on another partition and make it into the Mandrake partition. Any of yours would do, not just the one marked "windows". You might want to amalgamate a couple of your current partitions into one, then install Mandrake on the spare space and then carve up what's left into two again. Don't forget to turn off the windows swap space (it's all in the Mandy manual). Re: Alcatel. Just read Let's-Eat-Gary's thread and follow it to the letter. Don't set up anything internet-y during setup, follow the instructions afterwards.
  7. Do you have a modem? If so, which sort? Do you have a router, if so, which? When firefox is taking ages, what does it say in the bottom left-hand corner - is it "looking up xyx" or "waiting for xyx" or "connecting to xyx" or something else?
  8. I'd like to be able to re-start my network automatically in 10OE at KDE startup (there's something wrong with my network card and it won't work otherwise!). I've tried putting the (executable) file "network.sh" into ~/.kde/Autostart and nothing happens. I also just want it to run without having to enter the root password. Is this possible? TIA!
  9. Yay! Got desktop icons working on the rox pinboard One last icewm-specific qu (promise!) - is there a lighter pdf/ps viewer than kghostview?
  10. He does a lot of booklet work - I've only just got him off booting into the XP partition to use Publisher! AFAIK Abiword doesn't support this in the same way Oo and Publisher do. Arthur: I'll have a look at Rox icons, thanks! I've been having all sorts of fun with idesk today...
  11. Thanks, everyone, have a virtual beer on me! I'm currently running 10OE with IceWM with Rox, Firefox, Kile and Abiword. I'm so impressed with the performance out of my old hardware! I've got it looking more or less how I want it, the only problem being no icons on the desktop :o I'm now thinking of doing something similar when I get my old desktop (spec.s above) back from my sister-in-law - it's currently running Redhat 9 (I lent it to her a year ago) so will need something else when it returns. I want to set it up as my husband's work computer, but Abiword won't be suitable as he needs the higher functions of OpenOffice. What would be the best way of making that run OK? Is it simply going to be a case of upping the RAM?
  12. Thankyou all! I'm currently fiddling around with IceWM rather than KDE on my current installation and I'm extremely pleased with the performance. I hadn't realised that there is that much of a difference between different window managers - I'm still only a year into Linux and have used KDE for all of that except for a brief Gnome stint on Redhat 9 (RIP). I shall bear in mind these comments, though, when I get back my even older desktop (P3 500MHz, 128MB ram, 13Gb hd)!
  13. I've got the original laptop Noah had in the ark, and I'm wondering which distro would be best on it. OK, so it's not quite that old, but it's an Athlon 600Mhz processor, 3Gb hard drive and I think 128Mb ram but I can't remember. I've got Mandy 10 on it at the moment, but it grinds away quite a bit and every so often seems to run out of KDE memory and won't open anything. So the question is: which Linux distro would be best to put on it? I'm looking for something really pared down that will run my essential things well and nothing else. I've got two desktops to do anything fancy on, my laptop is a work machine only. So I need it to run a web browser and Kile and that's about it. Any ideas?

    Router

Thanks, Gowater! That sounds nice and manageable. Re: wireless, I think I'm far too poor to be able to put three computers on wireless. Anyway, I rather like the sight of a 15m ethernet cable running up the stairwell - it does say "here be Geek" quite well!! :D

    Router

Before splurging out money, I thought I'd check with theknowledgeable folkes here - is the following Linksys router a good one to use with 10OE? ebuyer Also, are there any good tutorials on how to set up a router network (I'm assuming the in-box instructions will be for M$ )? BTW, I'm on broadband connecting via the ubiquitious speedtouch 330 modem. TIA!
  16. Norlug for 10OE Firefox-0.10 rpm Firefox-0.10 devel rpm Enjoy, and bung the guy some thinkgeek stuff if you like it :D
  17. N'ere mind, I re-installed. Humph.
  18. I was going through my file system under KDE (Mandrake 10OE) and suddenly I started getting error messages that it couldn't open a directory, or the MCC. The error messages said something about a DCOP error, a communications error, and finally something about being out of memory (/tmp came up somewhere). I rebooted and got dumped to command line, where I deleted the large amount of stuff from the wastebin (I'd done a backup and the previous backups were in there) and then rebooted again. When I rebooted, at the point when kde would normally load (I have auto-login to KDE), I got a screen that was three-quaters blue, and the bottom right-hand corner was what looked like a console, with a command promp. Typing in "kde" got the response that the server was already active. I did a backup just before things went pear-shaped, but I have no idea how to restore from the command line. Please please please help!
  19. Nero...Nero...Nero...Nero...Nero...Nero... That's Nero Recorders > burn image. Et le voila. BTW, Mandrakemove is a bit pants compared wth the full distro (won't do decent look-n-feel stuff) but I guess it gives the general feel...
  20. I remember a bottle called "Alcohol 100%". Or maybe that was just the small print...
  21. Simply wave your paw, Dogbert-like, at the unbelievers and say "bah". Windoze 2000 ran like treacle on my Dell Inspiron (500MHZ processor). Mandrake 9.2 was amazing - "wow, my laptop can do that??!". 10OE even better except it won't shutdown from the GUI. Minor problem compared with M$2000!
  22. Always use "burn image" from the top "recorder" menu on Nero (when Nero first opens up, cancel whatever comes up automatically). My dad created himself four nice shiney coasters when I switched him to Linux by ignoring this Of course, there's always UseLinux if things get too hairy :D
  23. Just installed it, love it! :woot_jump: laudire: download firefox-1.0PR-i686-linux-gtk2+xft-installer.tar.gz from the mozilla site. Right-click and do actions > extract here. Go to the new directory ("firefox-installer"), double-click on firefox-installer.sh. Should run the installer. To run, doubleclick on firefox.sh in the firefox-installer directory. I've made an icon shortcut to that. I'm sure there's a better way to run it, but it works for me! Luck...
  24. Having been warned off using the wizards, I'm trying to configure a network of two systems, both running Mandrake 10(OE), and it hasn't worked. Hardware config: Dante (desktop 'puter) connected to the internet with Speedtouch 330 USB modem. Connected to the hub from ethernet card (eth0). Aristottle (laptop) connected to the hub from ethernet card (eth0). Cables and hub work. Both firewalls are down. Dante's eth0 has IP 192.168.0.1, and has internet IP by DHCP from my ISP. Aristottle has 192.168.0.12 I can ping 192.168.0.12 from 192.168.0.1 but not the other way round. When Dante's firewall is on I get 'destination host unreachable', and when it is off I don't get anything - it's like the ping command has frozen after saying "PING". I can't get online from Aristottle either, neither by pinging, browsing by name (google.com) nor browsing by IP (216.239.59.99). Full setup is: Dante: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.0.1 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.0.0 BROADCAST=192.168.0.255 ONBOOT=yes MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes WIRELESS_ENC_KEY="" /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 212.67.120.148 # ppp temp entry nameserver 212.67.96.129 # ppp temp entry /etc/sysconfig/network HOSTNAME=Dante NETWORKING=yes /etc/sysctl.conf {contains} net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 Aristottle: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.0.12 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.0.0 BROADCAST=192.168.0.255 ONBOOT=yes HWADDR=00:01:02:d2:3d:43 MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes WIRELESS_ENC_KEY="" /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 192.168.0.1 /etc/sysconfig/network HOSTNAME=Aristottle NETWORKING=yes GATEWAY=192.168.0.1 GATEWAYDEV=eth0 Any ideas what I should do? [edited to clarify ping problem]
  25. I found during setup I had to have the system security setting on 'standard' rather than 'high', or shorewall was interfering with the setup. I've switched it back now with no ill-effects (so far...).
