  1. Hi all.. Created a script using animail (a fetchmail like app) that checks all my internet mail accounts and brings the messages to my local system. I set it up in cron to run every hour of every day at 15 minute intervals (ie: 1:00, 1:15 etc..) Problem is, every 15 minutes of every hour of every day of the year, I get a crom mail message notifying me the script has run. YIKES... thats 96 crom msgs a day (assuming I leave machine on 24/7) I've spent the last couple of hours or so looking at man cron, searching for a cron.config file, but no luck.. Surely there must be some way to turn this off.. I can't imagine someone setting up a cron job that runs every 5 minutes or so.. WOW.. 288 notification messages a day.. (and that would be for just one task) Any ideas on this one? TIA
  2. Try this.. When you use 'su' add a '-' (ie: su -) The difference is su: changes uid:gid only su - : changes uid:gid to 0, reads your bashrc, and moves you to /root directory. (much more like actually loggin in as root as opposed to just changing uig:gid)
  3. OK.. I tired that.. even 'REBOOTED' although I admit I thought long and hard on how to accomplish this without having to actually do it.. :P Long and short of it... It failed to help... so I just obtained copy of 9.1 CD's and upgraded... everything working like wonderful now... I pitty 9.0 users trying to use this scanner... It's a real pitty.. the list of supported scanners for epson just SKIP this model.. it goes from 1240 to 1260 with no 1250 in between.. DARN!!.. OK.. better run... Thanks for your suggestions..
  4. Mdk 9.0 and i've followed all the instructions i've ever found on how to get this thing to work but it just doesn't want too.. Neither Kooka or Xsane see the device. Here is a list of all instructions I found.. For reasons still unclear, we have noticed that the configuration file /etc/sane.d/epson.conf may get truncated over a reboot. This file is used by SANE to connect to your scanner and part of the sane-backends package that is installed by default. When this has happened iscan can not connect to your scanner (it uses SANE internally) and will show a message box with Could not send command to scanner. You can get your scanner back to working order with the following work-around. It reconstructs the truncated /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file. 1. log in as root 2. edit /etc/sane.d/epson.conf You can use the following contents as is, just cut-and-paste them into your editor buffer and save. # /etc/sane.d/epson.conf # See sane-epson(5) for more information. # # for a SCSI scanner scsi EPSON # # for a parallel port scanner #pio 0x278 #pio 0x378 #pio 0x3BC # # for a USB scanner # - only enable this if you really have an EPSON scanner # It could otherwise block your non-EPSON scanner from # being recognized. usb /dev/usb/scanner0 3. start "Image Scan! for Linux" $ iscan Should you be using an USB scanner, then you might want to take a look at How to use USB for additional information. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Check the kernel version. Execute the following command and check that the kernel version is 2.4.3. or later. $ cat /proc/version 2. Connect a scanner. Turn on the scanner and connect it with USB. 3. Edit "/etc/sane.d/epson.conf". Example) When the device file name of the USB scanner is "/dev/usb/scanner0", change the line which begins with usb of epson.conf as follows.. usb /dev/usb/scanner0 4. Acquire the vender ID and model ID. Execute the following command to acquire the vendor ID and model ID of the connected scanner. $ cat /proc/bus/usb/devices S: Manufacturer=EPSON S: Product=EPSON Scanner 010F C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr= 2mA I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=00 Prot=ff Driver=(none) E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 1 Ivl=16ms E: Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms E: Ad=03(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms [ 5. Install the scanner module. Example) Execute the following command as a root user. (Specify the vender ID and model ID acquired in the step 4 to the "vendor" and "product", respectively.) # modprobe scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x010b 6. Run the Image Scan! for Linux. $ iscan ---------------------------------------------------------- ANYONE??
  5. btw, PMPATRICK.. this script works great... now I just need to learn WHY it works.. LOL.. again, thanks to all of you..
  6. You guys are just too good... Yes, I have mkisofs and can figure out how to use it eventually using man pages if necessary. BUT .. one thing... K3B setup indicates the mkisofs applicatin is not there but it is. Ummmm, and it's in /usr/bin (which is in search path). The permissions are rws instead of rwx for owner. I'm guessing this is SUID and wondering why that would prevent K3B from finding it!! Any ideas on how to remedy this would be helpful.. I use the CLI all the time and am definately NOT afraid of it or of learning new CLI tricks and tips and whatever... but if I can do it with K3B, what the heck.. why not? <g>
  7. I've used mdkl 8.1 - 9.0 with DSL and linksys router and it was ALWAYS hassle free. Your gona love it.. <g>
  8. I have a win2k user friend that would like a copy of one of my personal CD's. He lives in another city so we want to just have me make an iso and let him download it and make his own CD from the iso image. OK... Not a problem until I found NONE of my CD apps actaully create iso images. What I get are img/toc file pairs that can be burned to a cd in Linux but are not compatable with any win2k app (that Im aware of anyway).. Any ideas? Eroaster, X CD Roast, K3B, gnometoaster.. I've tried just about all the major ones.. TIA ... Mike
  9. uummm... I have no idea either, but you might look at sweep. I read somewhere it is supposed to be a very good sound file editor. Maybe it can do what your looking for.. Good Luck.. http://www.metadecks.org/software/sweep/ Mike
  10. Sorry EZROLLER, I didn't mean to ignore your post.... On my system, there is no /etc/X11/dm directory on my system (mdk 9.1). There is: /etc/X11/xdm/, /etc/X11/gdm/ but NO /etc/X11/dm/ OR /ect/X11/kdm/ .... Of course it doesn't really matter now since it seems to be working. I plan to try adding another Desktop to validate this procedure.
  11. All... After I restarted xserver (Ctl+Alt+Bksp) a couple of times, I was able to access tne new desktop. It must be xserver has to reinitialize itself and reread that directory in order to know what desktops are available. Thanks for your help.. Mike..
  12. I vote Kuickshow too... There is a Linux version of XNView (a window$ image browser) with slidshow and all that. It will also animate gif and png animations... I'm don't remember it coming in a RPM for mandrake but the install from tarball was no big deal. Works great. Only issue was starting it in browser mode. You have to involk it 'xnview -browser' but that info is in the man pages..

Logged out, logged in again only this time choosing the new item Antiright but kdm started iceWM (again) just like last time. Any more ideas
  14. Maybe this is old stuff but I just can't keep looking anymore At one time I had a little HOWTO on adding desktop GUI's to KDM and/or changing between kdm/gdm etc, but it is long gone somehow. I'm running mdk 9.1 and installed a new desktop I found called Antiright but I can't put it in the kdm. The configuration menu option just adds a 'text entry' for it and if I choose it, kdm runs iceWM. If someone can with this I promise I'll print it out and have it tatooed to palm of my hand so I'll never EVER forget it again.. :P TIA Mike..
  15. And to think all this time I believed I had done something wrong during installation!! -------- The box said, install Windows 98 or better. So I installed Linux! --------
