  1. Well.. I'm actually tryng to change the BG of the panel to get rid of that ugly gray so it will match my Desktop background better.. Let's face it, it's not a biggie.. (not like my damn evolution problem I'm gona post later) but the silly thing WAS there and NOW it's not.. really annoying... I'm beginning to relate to the guys in my linux sig that I goto that say 'Mandrake BREAKS things every time they upgrade'... I say this because I REALLY feel this problem stems from some of the 'OFFICIAL' mdk KDE upgrades I installed... I'll be glad when Debian gets their RHL installer working so I can make the switch... I've loved MDK for a long time and I'd still recommend it to most new users but sometimes it can be a REAL PAIN
  2. I'm just now getting back to my 'issues'.. so i'll give this a try... Thanks for the info... Will post later on success/failure.. :P
  3. Well.... before you 'bin' it, give me a shout... I know some needy students that could make good use of it, linux installed or not.. (although I admit I'd do almost anything to avoid the *doe$ route) :P
  4. Finally got a laptop (IBM ThinkPad 600E) which is sorta old but better than nothin.. :D and I'm pretty pleased with the smooth Mdk 9.1 install. HOWEVER.. B) there are two unresolved issues... I can't seem to get the sound or the internal modem working... The win98 install didn't see the modem either but did manage to get the sound (after I located a driver for it) Oh well... If anyone has solved either one of these or has any ideas where to look I'd be forever greatful note: yes, i know what a problem internal modems are with linux.. but MAYBE someone might have solved this one.. :P TIA
  5. Nice FYI stuff and I'm sure I can put it to use but after looking at it, I don't see where it's going to help solve this.. Damn upgrades... I'm sure it's one of the KDE upgrades I did from mandrake but not sure which one or even how to track it down.. :-(
  6. :woops: Sorry... Mdk 9.1 with standard distro install of KDE 3.1 shoulda included all that in original msg.. I OUGHTA know that much by now!!
  7. I don't know what I did , but some how the 'Appearance' settings are no longer available for my KDE panel. I was going to change the BG to an image to sorta match my desktop background and noticed it was gone... I've been doing some mdk updates and some of them were KDE related. Do you suppose that could have anything to do with it? But MOST of all, is there a way to 'reinstall' the KDE Control Module? I'd gladly settle for just that if it would solve this problem. TIA
  8. A final note: Signed up at openoffice.org and entered an 'issue' ticket (they don't have TROUBLE tickets) about this and within 24 hours I had a reply that they were unable to duplicate it so ticket was closed. Possible source of my problem, according to them, was maybe associated or unique to the 'build' of oo 1.0.2 that i was using. Sooo, tried yesterday (two times) to get 71megs of OO 1.0.3 (because I'm afreaid to go with 1.1 and mdk) and that took forever with 56k dial up. Finally goit a copy and it was corrupted... SH#$... will try again tonight but if that doesn't work, I'll just use Star Office 5.2 (which i installed just to see if IT would print and it did with no problem) OK.. enough bable.. </bable> till the next booga boo comes along..
  9. I GIVE UP!! I could print a frigin novel with this printer and any WP application I have on my system. BUT... just ask it to do a simple damn Envelope and you might as well ask it to jump off the hard disk and do a strip tease for you.. Thanks jethro, Peep, I appreciate your help.. Next move is gona have to be contacting the OO developers with this problem. again, thanks all that offered help..
  10. I've been outa touch a few days and just now back to normal... Thanks for the tip Jethro, I'll give it a try tonight (i hope) and let you know how it turns out..
  11. HP Deskjet 895Cxi and it has worked just fine with everything else except this... ho humm.... <g>
  12. Ok.. Have already done the mv .mozilla .mozilla1.5-original and restarted mozilla. Still gives me the tiny starting window.. Will get another copy of the file and try that.. Will post when it's done.. Thanks for your suggestions, I realy appreciate it..
  13. Ok... good idea Peep but it still did not print a thing... This time I didn't even get the return address. YA troublesome point with Formate -> Page as envelope is you don't get the options you get with the insert envelope. ie: printer options for how the envelope is/will be fed to the printer. I'm bugged with this because I have 3 other PC's on the network and they all print various and sundary things to this printer. It's great to have linux operate as a print server for them and it saves a ton of money so I don't need a printer on each box... But geessshhh... I don't uneerstand WHY envelopes are such an issue... ... still lookin for solution ...
  14. Yes.. OO Writer... You get to the envelope option via Insert -> Envelope This gives you a text box for return address and one for mailing address. It's simple enough to figure out, it just didn't work.. :-(
  15. I just updated my mdk 9.1 mozilla from 1.3.1 to 1.5 and everything SEEMS to work fine but there is this silly issue of the initial stat up window. I't's about the size of a postage stamp. Once I resize it then mazamize it, everything is fine. It's jut that darn FIRST window. Any suggestions... ideas... jokes.... horror stories??? TIA
  16. Ok... I've tried them all (listed in the topic and I worked at it for 4.5 hours the other night. OO had the closest thingie to the windoz app, (what's it called... uumm.. something word??) but it only printed out the return address.. no matter how hard I tried. Does anyone have ANY suggestions? I print about a dozen or so envelopes a month for various things and I hate to fire up my dual-boot just to use that OTHER appliation to print it out on my linux box printer. btw, I'm also lookin for a simple to use backup application that can be set up then crond to do timely and routine backups... TIA
  17. Well, I personally don't use squid but you did ask for suggestions :D Next time it happens, stop squid '/etc/init.d/squid stop' then in another terminal as root in the /var/log directory tail -f syslog then open another term window next to this one and start squid again '/etc/init.d/squid start' I suppose you could do 'restart' but I'm trying to keep the tasks seperate in syslog During the start script execution, you should see output directly generated by the script get appended to the syslog as it runs. Hopefully you might see something pointing to the problem. Good Luck..
  18. Great suggestion Chris, MozPlugger works leaps and bounds better than the other one. Hope I can return the favor one day
  19. Hi all and Happy New Year... Running 9.1 Mozilla 1.3.1 (default installation from CD) I was downloading some wav files and I had to grab them all because Mozilla didn't have a plugin to listen to them before downloading. Later I found Plugger and installed it after verifying I had all the appropriate support apps installed. (well, at least MOST of them <g>) After I installed it, I went back to the Plugger homepage and used their 'test plugger' page and the only file that worked (almost) was the ogg file type. Very frustrating... Any ideas? TIA
  20. Thanks Steve.. that was it... I suppose if I took those two 'echo' statements out that i used to validate the script running that might do the trici too. Thanks for the cron lesson.. Mike..
  21. good idea... have to go out for a while now but will definately give it a try when I get back.. Will post results...
  22. Found package > faces-penguin < with penguin user faces from a lot of previous mdk releases.. For the life of me cant remember where it came from.. ( PLF more than likely.. ) Anyway... thanks for all your suggestions.. ( in the past I've used my own putting them in the faces directory but just didn't want to go through all that trouble again..) One issue down, many more to go.. LOL..
  23. Don't recall at the moment if it was mdk 8.0, or 8.2 that had all the NICE user faces.. now using 9.1 and STILL a bunch of really crappy ones.. you know.. FLOWERS.. DOGS.. BIRDS... gessh... what a bunch of worthless images.. Seems I read a post quite a while ago about thee being an archive of user faces somewhere on mdk site for downloading.. Does anyone know if that's still true and if so.. what the url would be to get it? TIA..
  24. I use KDE but only until GNOME catches up. Using a linux app that isn't based completely on 'free oss' worrys me... who knows when or if the owners of those 'loaned libraries' will decide they want a piece of the action and ask for royalities? After all, we can't expect everyone to be as kind to the OSS community as Sun was when they donated the StarOffice code (but not the name) so development in the OS community coule continue under a different name while they turned it into a 'corporate' product... Sooo... as much as I may like KDE (for now) my site is set on GNOME... i cant' wait till they have some apps that rival KOOKA, K3B and a few others that I find to be 'best of class' for their functionality..
