Perfectly fine linux box
My friend's router/firewall is a 486/386, i cant remember.
I disagree, i wasn't happy with my laptop athlon xp 1250 and 256mb ram (Thank god i have a new one now). I suppose it depends what you use it for eh?
and how much money you have to drop on a laptop.
-
I dont use the 64 bit version, I was worried that I was missing something with the 32 bit version by using the free version. I do know that I am missing a load of third party stuff and other non-free things.
-
quick question, what do you mean missing RPM's, whats missing? I assume this only applies to the x86_64 version not the i586 version.

I plan on grabbing a copy of Suse 9.3 I have a palm, ipod and a pvr card that I have been trying link crazy to get to work on 10.1 and cant seem to get any working. I did install 10.2 rc2 and got the ipod to work half way but that's it. I am relying on Suse 9.3 to live up to its claim that it will work with the ipod out of the box. I have also used 9.2 and it worked with the palm right after installation.
So my issue comes down to peripheral usability.

I know what DRM does, and again, from my point of view he isnt stealing anything.
DRM is a foolish waste of time. Nearly every DRM and copy protection scheme I know of been broken, it still doesnt stop music from being copied. Even if one person downloads music from the ITMS, another person is going to buy the cd, rip and upload it. The music is going to be pirated either way.
In this case, the DRM is never even applied to the song. The songs are downloaded from ITMS and then DRM retarded within iTunes. Nobody is losing money here either, ITMS still get their cut, the artists still get their cut too when it's purchased.
I think its almost a win win situation for the artists, now Linux users can buy and listen to their music too. There is mp3tunes.com but it's selection is still pretty limited.
The alternative is that you have to buy music from ITMS in Windows, and you are then restricted to what you can play it on. Correct me if I am wrong here, but I dont think DRM protected songs are going to play in your Rhythmbox, mpd or XMMS.
iphitus
unless you burn the songs or playlist to a cd then re-rip that cd.
/my 2 cents

Ok, so I did urpme kernel-source to remove the old one, then did urpmi kernel-source to get the new one. However, I get:
.../official/10.1/i586/media/main/kernel-source-2.4.27-0.pre2.1mdk.i586.rpm
And:
[root@dhcp071016 mythtv]# uname -r
2.6.8.1-12mdk
How can I reconcile these two things? I'm having a really hard time finding the exact source for my kernel version. Should I just update both the kernel and source to the newest versions? If so, how would I go about doing that?
What happens when you try:
urpmi kernel-source-2.6 or urpmi kernel-source-2.6.8.1-12
I cant remember exactly what it is but I think its along those lines. Im at work right now and cant check it right now.

Yes, and it is easy.
Note: this is computers. Anything that should work might not work on this very day!!! Back up your data.
Install the new drive. Using harddrake, repatition the second drive to what ever formation you want. Then tell Mandy to move the data of a specific folder to that partition. For example, if you create a /usr partition that is 15G, Mandy will ask if you want all your /usr data moved to the new partition. Say yes. It works quite well. You can do theis for any identifiable part on the file tree: /home, /usr, /etc, whatever. Note that if you move root, /, you will have to edit lilo and fstab. As it is, I think Mandy will offer to edit fstab. I always do those things manually because I am anal!
I have a question on this same subject. I have a 120gb drive with [20g ntfs winxp][20g ext3 mdk 10.1][80g ntfs data] I want to add another drive to be used as ext3 data drive. I have installed the drive, formatted it and set it to be mounted as /mnt/data1. after I did this only root could write to this drive. I did 'chgrp jason' & 'chown jason' on the mount point /mnt/data1. This allowed my user ID to have write access to the drive. I know this is not ideal and I would like to know how to allow all system users to have write access to this drive.

Sounds like you dont have the kernel source package installed. urpmi should be already set up to use your cd media (or whatever you used to install mandrake). all you should need to do is open a console and use the command
su -
{{enter root password}}
urpmi kernel-source
then try 'make' again.

but I wouldn't pay $200 for any card :)
I second that one. although $100 is a little more understandable.

now how do i get all that loaded when booting
To load modules at boot time check out /etc/modules
this is my /etc/modules file on PCLos P8:
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time. # # This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are # to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with # a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored. bttv

I was on one of the various mirrors for easy urpmi recently and it had a section where you could choose thac's rpms and a couple other 3rd party urpmi sites to add to your list of sources it would create the urpmi.addmedia lines for. Does anyone know where this might be now? Anyone else seen it before? I forgot to bookmark it and would like to use it again.

Sorry to bump this older post, but I ran into this same problem when trying to upgrade (dispite all warnings) my perfectly fine 10.1 official, to gnome 2.8 from cooker. I DID find a fix to this problem however. Just migrate to your favorite mirror & find the */devel/cooker/i586/media/main directory.
Download perl-URPM-1.05-1mdk.i586.rpm (or whatever current version is on cooker) and run:
rpm -Uvh perl-URPM-1.05-1mdk.i586.rpm
Fixed this issue for me! Hope this helps!
This let me use urpmi again. but MCC is still borked. I get segmentation fault when I run from CLI.

I beleive the missing signature message would have been due to you not having the servers pgp key installed.

No-one with Myth experience here?

I am having an issue with mythfilldatabase filling my database. I dont know where or how to check to find the breakdown in communication. I am able to watch tv, although only 1 channel assumingly because I have not channel lineup information. If I go to the channel linueup in Myth I am presented with a blank listing, if I press up or down arrow key Myth seg faults.
When I run mythfilldatabase it looks to be working correctly, it seemingly downloads several days worth of channel data. I dont think that this data is correctly being dumped into my sql database.
I am running mandrake 10.1 with a wintv pvr 250 and ivtv.
I also just reinstalled mandrake 10.1 for the heck of it.
Here is what is happening when I run mythfilldatabase:

Got my card today. It's kind of ugly, but I'll try it out tomorrow.
You ought to scan it and post (after blacking out card number, name and other information) an image of what it looks like, I am curious, and jealous.
-
unfortunately they are currently not taking applications at this time due to an issue with their non-profit status.
Man I want one too! I could get rid of my gaudy credit union one.
-
according to that release schedule they *should* have released RC2 already. Guess they missed it.

Just adding my similar experience to the list. I've been over this. I ended up nuking the system in a fit to fix it. The crazy things we do late at night...
I almost forgot about this thread. I have recently been running the latest cooker and I have had no problems with the wireless card working. I have even gained a nice little icon that sits next to my clock that tells me when I am connected to a network (with either eth0 (10/100 card) or eth1 (wireless card))
I like cooker. I think there are going to be quite a few bug fixes in 10.1

Yep, total noob...
Installed Mandrake 10 got everything working OK (Well I do get an an eth0 error on boot up but it works OK and from searching this forum sounds normal.)
I wanted to install some additional software but it won't because I am not logged in as root and I can't figure out how to do that.
When I reboot the only option seems to be to login as the user I created.
I have tried in a console via, it seems to work but when I go back to KDE it doesn't recognize it.
So, how do I login as root and then get to KDE?
Thanks and sorry for such a basic question. (I did try to search on "login" but the forum gave me a keyword error.)
If you are able to login via command line (for example the gui is not starting when your system starts) you can login as root like this:
login: root password {enter your root password that you set during the os installation}
then at the command line use:
startx
to start the gui environment. Another way that you can do what you want is to open a konsole and use these commands:
[jason@localhost jason]$ su Password: [root@localhost jason]# mcc [root@localhost jason]#
This will open the Mandrake Control Center with root privledges allowing you to add and remove software.

According to the Mandrake Linux 10.1 Release Schedule the version freeze will occur on July 26, 2004. If the new X.org is released after this date, it is very unlikely that it will be added into Mandrake 10.1 - in fact I would be so bold as to say you won't see the new X.org in Mandrake 10.1, you probably won't see it in Mandrake until 10.2 - unless you get it from cooker or some outside source builds an RPM.
Just wanted ya'll to see that the time table for cooker is different than the regurgitated information on the PClinux site. According to the Mandrake Dev Community wiki the dates are different. Here is a link to the current and accurate information: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/...andrakelinux101

I didnt have to compile it. there should be a file on their site called install-mrpostman-20040616.jar that will install it without compiling.
