Not sure if youve seen it but there is a group of people at ukterrorist.com thinking about putting out a server side patch called pro-mode. It contains several fixes, patches and changes to counter-strike's appearance and gameplay.
What are the problems that it should fix?* Radar transparency - a long standing problem. cl_radar_transparency as a value from 0-100 which would relate to a transparency % for the RADAR. A selection of radar background colours would also perhaps be suitable. Possible even in inbuilt toggle so people can change radar at a keypress.
* Weapon recoils - less recoil period, and decreased recoil for firing while moving. In particular with rifles and pistols. If deagle recoil were improved, its power would have to be decreased somewhat or its rate of fire decreased, otherwise it would be overpowered. However, that change would be preferable to the randomness we have now
* Removal of jumping slowdown - an unnecessary change brought in to combat bunny hopping which had been largely stopped in 1.3 with the restricted air accelerate, to a degree where bh was no longer an issue anyway
* Removal of weapon switch delay - a change that was totally in favour of making the game easier for new people to play. Well done valve, people have bought the game now, so it is not needed
* Removal of shield - nice idea Valve, but we don't want it
* Decreased rate of awp fire - there's nothing worse than someone getting an initial fair awp shot off, then unscoped shooting 2 people who jump past him out of pure luck. The weapon was never designed to be used this way and while it's nice to get those kills, it's a detriment to the game because it's just another random factor
* HLTV - combine it with a higher quality voice transmission so that commentators can be talking about the game as it's happening and players can choose to have ineyes view of the commentator, so they can see what the commentator is talking about. Also fix the sound issues regarding HLTV and make it a more accurate representation of ineyes viewing
* Game scoring - reintroduce CO rules with a few changes. Every time the bomb is planted, both the current round timer and the game timer is frozen. This would make eco rounds viable in CO, giving the Ts a chance to plant and incentive to do something other than a lemming rush. If a player suicides, he gets no money in the next round.
* Standardised server settings - enforce maxrate 25000, minrate 8000 (for isdners). updaterates 101 and 40 (again, for isdners). Set round times, 2 minutes or so.
Less vital changes
* Removal of dead bodies - I don't want them sitting on a floor and I certainly don't want them floating through floors to the depths of the earth. What was wrong with bodies just disappearing?
* Change of commands for zooming and silencer - it's nice to zoom, it's irritating to put the silencer on at the wrong moment
* Variety of crosshair choices - let's face it, nobody likes the current one
Other issues with cs
* Flashbang bugs - unflashing yourself yadda yadda
* Sound bugs - grenade switches cutting out awp sounds
* Model bugs - players not looking in the direction they are really facing
* Hitbox bugs - only really appear on some servers, the majority of "hitbox bugs" are just random recoil not hitting who you are aiming at, or screwed around interp settings
* FPS bugs - let's face it, recording demos should not lead to such huge fps drops, it never did in the past
Personally I think there are some good points about it, but the majority is basically a bunch of people who cant accept the game and the way it works. Things like decreased awp fire rate, no shield, removal of jumping slowdown sound to me like the sort of things a noob who thinks they are l33t would say should be changed. There are many ways to counter awps and shields, and the jumping slowdown stops bunny-hopping, something which noobs used to do back in 1.3.
Then there are the things like bugs (sound, demo, hitbox etc.), radar transperancy etc. which sound like a great thing to do. And Ive got no problem with that. Optional stuff like changing of silencer/scope buttons, disappearing dead bodies etc. can be selected by the user, everyone has an opinion. I have personally never had a problem with putting on a silencer instead of a scope, and I enjoy the bodies being there, it gives you an idea of where the killer could be, and makes the whole thing seem cooler :D
What does everyone else think! Is pro-mode CS cool or uncool!?

oh my god-ies, i want those g5 64-bit's! :D
They are so awesome. And I agree with bvc, win xp pro aint so bad, i havent had too many probs either!

Just wondering what everyone's history with distro's has been.
What did you start with, what have you used since, why have you switched, and what do you use at the moment?
I started with mandrake 9.1, dropped for debian in an effort to be linux hardcore, but I couldnt figure it out, then I switched to fedora core 1 out of curiosity. Its been great so far! Im looking forward to mdk10 full release :D gnome 2.6 is purrdy

Great wp's!
They are very simple and clean, easy to look at
Im looking forward to your next collection, if you need any help, dont hesitate to ask B)
-
SWEET! :D
My guess is that several pending distro releases will suddenly come out!
Fedora Core 2 here I come B)

ROFL well I run a couple of overclocked goods in this box, and it runs stable at 78C which is 172.4F
:D Best listen to Kjel

Just in reply to your saying that mandrake felt newb-ish and debian felt too expert-ish. I tried mandrake first then debian and had the same experience.
I just installed fedora a couple of days ago and its running beautifully. Doesnt feel too newb really, yet its setup is very intuitive. It has equivalents to the MCC and urpmi too!
If you want to read up about its features and windows equivalents go to -> http://www.johnmunsch.com/articles/FedoraC...GettingStarted/

Getting a bit heavy-handed there veedubb :P
Believe it or not but there is a noon-destructive way to get a winmodem to a better place.
With a bit of help from www.linmodems.org I was able to track down this driver here.Intel Developer
This is perfect except for the fact that its only compatible with kernel versions 2.2.12 to 2.2.18. So you cant use that (the kernel for 9.2 is 2.4)
Now by the looks of it that modem you have there is actually quite old (v.90), hence the end of its support at kernel v.2.2.18. So probably my recomendation would be to overhaul that modem and put a newer (v.92) modem. Internal modems are only about $15 here is Australia so if youre in the US it would be even cheaper.
Now the advantage is if you end up with the newer intel chipset modem then driver support will be easy. Intel saw fit to provide us with a driver for the MD5628D-L-B chipset (the newer v.92 one) @
A v.92 modem would probably be faster and/or have better packet manager than a v.90 if my memory serves me correct.
My 0.02cents,
plati
PS. If you get a new winmodem email me @ avenger_1900@hotmail.com if you ned help getting it working.

Well put tux. The fun part is when you get wineX as well.
/me waits for the day when wineX includes vertex and pixel shaders

gabbman's idea is a great one. Id recommend it personally since I use that method too.
Once linux picks up the network card (eg. eth0) youre in business. B)

If youve never played Half-Life I would recommend you do! It has a great story line, still decent graphics (with openGL drivers) and.........its an awesome game!
I would also recommend RTCW, its a great shooter too and your system should handle it fine.
if youre looking for a more deathmatch-y experience, go for unreal tournament or unreal tournament 2003, unreal tournament 2004 should even be available in the US by now, its only in magazine review stage here in australia sadly.
ET is great, but I never really got in the XP Points and ranking side of it. Horses for courses I suppose, so give it a try. Otherwise, if you want an online game with a large player base, you cant go past Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. Both will run decently over a dialup connection and are modifications of Half-Life.

I dont believe Open Office requires registration so dont worry about it i guess.
You should be able to select a Never Register button.

Does the modem use USB or LAN to connect to your computer?
Try and scan through the manual/help pages for any mention of a chipset.

The kernel is 2.4.22-10mdk
I am not sure which kernel source, I just followed the FAQ which said to urpmi kernel-source
Tried checking rpmdrake and searched kernel-source, but nothing came up. Sounds like maybe the kernel-source didnt install, even though uh.... it said it did.
The driver file name is NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run Which sounds like version 4496 to me.
hope this helps
EDIT: ran a rpm -q on kernel-source and binutils. Results are:
kernel-source-2.4.22-26mdk and
binutils-2.14.90.0.5-2mdk

im following the FAQ posted about installing the NVIDIA Display drivers but I keep hitting the same error.
I exit X, login to root and urpmi binutils and kernel-source. I already had binutils but not kernel-source, so the package downloaded and installed. I kept following the steps and it was all fine until after the license agreement.
The logs in /usr/var/nvidia-installer.log show the following:

Modifying fstab
in Hardware
Posted
I have two other harddrives apart from my linux partition which I am getting sick of continuously mounting everytime I log on. I tried to edit fstab but it sort of scared me off. Both the drives are fat32, one is at /dev/hda5 the other at /dev/hdb1 and their mount points are /mnt/media and /mnt/share respectively.
I would also like to create shortcuts to them from my /home directory, if you could also tell me how to do that, it would be good B)
Thanks!
