  1. How's this for a fix for my "Black Screen of Death" and *poof* problem...

New coat of thermal paste inbetween the processor and heatsink ?

I ended up taking it all apart and found it appeared to have a sub-par contact in this area. (The original was a peel-off strip supplied by the original heatsink. Suspecting this could cause instability (thanks also to plati in #musb) I picked some 10% silver thermel past (not as cheap as I thought) and put it all back together. Things been running smooth ever since... and about 10 degrees coolor too! :D

The only other thing I noted when tearing it apart was that two of the cards (sound and nic) did not quite slide out like th others. They more like "popped" right out as opposed to sliding out (hard to describe, but...) I thought maybe somekind of short going on here, but when I seen the difference in running temperature, I credit the thermel paste more for the fix here.

Moral of this story... Don't overlook the little things ?

    thanx again,

  2. Normally I would say to remove xyz.rpm and reinstall, but this will wipe out half your installation in this case. Sounds like a real SNAFU... Just my suggestions here:

Have you tried creating a local source with these rpms ? say, /home/rpms

    then try urpmi --autoselect kdepim-3.1.3-22.1.92mdk.i586

    - or -

rpm -ivh kdepim-3.1.3-22.1.92mdk.i586 kdepim-kaddressbook-3.1.3-22.1.92mdk.i586 etc etc

    from /home/rpms.

(try it with and without other sources configured)

  3. Here's my way to move files to my local server:

    1) create a new "Link to Application" by right clicking on desktop. Name this "Super Konq" and link it to "kdesu konqueror"

    2) use this "Super User" konq browser to move, copy, delete my website files to /var/www/html folders.

Just to be sure... you can use a browser and get the Apache test page by going to:

    127.0.0.1/bsdlabs

    or

    127.0.0.1

    ???

  4. Yes, Mandrake Control Center

    from console type

    mcc

    from GUI

    K --> System --> Configuration --> Configure Your Computer

then choose, Boot, and Bootloader... You can change the settings in there.

(hope I read this question right)

Otherwise, you should be able to make your own links:

    ln -s

  5. Did you try a right click ? This could give you a context menu where you could get something done ?

This reminded me of something that just happened here. I boot to the cli and usually type "kde" to fire up KDE, but this time I typed "startx" instead and for some strange reason I found myself in BLACKBOX, which lacks any icons.

  6. I am a k3b user, so I am not too sure about x-cd roast, but did you install lame from PLF ? That may be the ticket to converting the mp3 to audio format... well I think it was for k3b anyway.

I am also trying to catch up on some audio recordings, but have found I can't record in the "CD plus" format. I tried "mixed mode," but those don't play in my car stereo, so I am forced to reboot and use nero :(

  7. I am not really sure, but I believe it's windows ActiveX that allows these browser hijackings that are popular these days... AND those popups that state "you have spyware" are the culprits that are doing the infecting (not sure, but there seems to be a patter here).

So I believe, those browser hi-jackings ain't gonna happen... but as for tracking, we still have cookies, which can report where we have been.

  8. Yes, journeys1, I can get the updates for 9.2 @ ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distr...dates/9.2/RPMS/

But seeing I am now running 10 CE, I have urpmi configured for this:

    ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distr...ates/10.0/RPMS/

Once I realized 10 CE wasn't getting any more updates and about to go final (right before the screw up with gnome 2.6 and also the mix up with the ftp tree) I stop from updating anything from the /dev or /cooker branches.

This is from Mandrake's download page:

Service availability (April 9th, 2004): due to a current re-organization of all our FTP tree, you may experience some issues in finding what you're looking for. Please accept our apologies. The whole service should be 100% back to normal operations on April 12th, 2004.

So its been 5 days since they should be back up... so if you have reconfigured your sources properly, they should be working by now. Maybe the mirror your using is still possibly toast for some reason ? I would double check the URLs and see if you can browse anything on that server

  9. journeys1,

The mirrors did not actually go down. Everything has been rearranged and things are not where they used to be. Such as, what used to be:

    /pub/linux/mandrake/Mandrake/9.2/i586/
    /pub/linux/mandrake/Mandrake/updates/9.2/RPMS/

    is now:

    /pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/
    /pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/updates/10.0/RPMS/

Plus there may not be anything to upgrade yet... only some kde stuff, mplayer, and a slightly updated kernel and sources, as far as I can see.

  10. the thing is, Texstar uses a portal that is fairly easy to hack :S

I heard they are working on using another portal system. But that won't emliminate themselve's from being a target.

I believe there are only two requirements you must meet in order to be hacked.

    1) You are connected to the internet or another computer

    2) Your machine is ON

Other then that everything is hackable !--- and to increase your chances --- just use anything that allows any sort of scripting or programming that adds interactivity to your sight, whether its SQL, PHP, PERL, CGI, ASP, etc. The more the website offers, the more chances to increase the number of security holes. The more popular the program, the more popular it becomes to script kiddies.

Why even the "best" of them have holes:

    http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?...howtopic=116163

(I just found one to list here, that happens to have the fix there too, just in case ;) , tho I am sure anon has everything up-to-date )

  11. I have those updates but..the other updates of CE, where are they?

    I don't know, I am confused...

    but I would try this:

    /pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/devel/10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/

    so then if,

CE packages on OE = asking for trouble

    does,

OE packages on CE = playing it safe ???

(I don't want to live on the "cutting edge" NO more, I got tricked into it in the first place)

    :joker:

  12. /me confused too !

And seeing peeps such as us (that are at least a bit familiar with Mandrake now) are all confused on the simple things, like installing an app --- do we dare imagine what it is going to be like for newbie windows converts ?

Currently running the version 10 Community Edition (with all updates before the mirror mess) I decided to dive head first into all of this tonight and went ahead and added the new 10 Official sources and began updating.

This Official Edition was just released today, and I already installed 20 megs of updates (mostly kde) and also a new kernel in addition.

So far, things are still running like they were.

(* note I do not have gnome installed... so I can't speak for it or its updates)

    :juggle:

  13. downgrade ???

    rpm -U --oldpackage [package]

Running 10CE with updates till about 2 weeks ago (the last updates I had seen). According to my "About KDE" it says I am running:

    Release 3.2 BRANCH >=20040204
