  1. yeah, I just have a bunch of family pics, and a bunch of mp3s in my home. I'll put those on CDRW. My other Home stuff - like spreadsheets & stuff, I think I already have all backed up on a usb stick. That way I can just install win2k on top of everything and not worry. If it asks me to put in a windoze 98 CD to verify my "upgrade" eligibility, I do have one of those. When you make a CDRW backup with k3b, can windoze access it?
  2. I am gonna make my FC3 machine a dual-boot win2k/Mandriva 2005 machine. I got the LE 2005 coverdiscs from the new Linux Format mag. Couple of questions first: 1. when I installed FC3 not too long ago, I "tried" to tell it to make a separate Home directory. How can I easily tell now if I really do have Home separate? In all my past installations, I always let the distro do its own thing - so I always ended up with Home under Root. 2. I will back up onto CDRW the stuff in Home that I don't want to lose, before proceeding, just in case. When I install win2k on top of FC3, will win2k nicely ask me where to put it (in other words, will it leave my Home patition alone?) or will it just use the whole HD? That reminds me, I have the win2k Upgrade CD - I wonder if I can even install it... 3. After win2k is installed, then I want to install Mandriva LE 2005. I only have one HD in this machine (200GB) so win & mandriva will be on the same HD. It would be nice if my original FC3 Home was still there, and Mandriva could just keep using it. Is this all the correct order of doing this...?
  3. I just picked up a usb wireless adapter today for my win2k box. Installed the driver CD, plugged the usb thingie into the back of my machine, and wireless internet worked great right off the bat. can't be any easier. The one I bought was a Netgear 54Mbps WG111. Would like to get the same usb adapter for my FC3 machine, unless it would be a problem.
  4. thanks, I've never had wireless internet before, so I wasn't sure how complicated it all was. When I called my internet provider (which is also a hardware/repair shop) they asked me if I was interested in a wireless card, or usb... Guess I'll pick up a wireless card for my win2k box and one for my FC3 box, and go from there.
  5. I already have a wireless router, and my FC3 box, my win2k box and my wife's windoze machine are all wired to it. My wife's college daughter is down the hall with a winXP machine with wireless internet. I want to make my FC3 box wireless also. Is it just a matter of buying a wireless card, and then FC3 will automatically get everything going.. (I can only hope)... or are more steps needed? I'm gonna make my win2k box wireless also, but I guess I'll just ask about the linux box here... :)
  6. when I reboot, the boot messages come up with "checking for (eth0) - No link - [FAILED] - check cable Ive got ethernet cables running all over my office. Guess I'll try another one.
  7. My FC3 machine won't bring up any web page anymore, just says... "google.com not found..." My wife & I have 3 machines in one room, all connected to one DHCP router & DSL modem. The internet comes up fine on my other machine (win2k) and also on my wife's piece-of-crap old win98 machine. And when I previously had FC2 on this machine, it ALWAYS worked great in terms of internet browsing. Now, in the past few days, my FC3 machine just won't show any web page. I was wondering what the possibilities could be... hardware, FC3, user... ? The machine isn't very old.

    MP3's in Linux?

I asked somewhere on another thread about how to get xmms to play mp3s automatically when you double-click them... When I double-click an mp3 file, xmms comes up but does not start playing the song. I have to drag & drop the song file onto the xmms faceplate. How do you get it to play with just a double-click of a file? I'm using gnome.

    Firefox

I've been using Firefox on my win98 machine at work for quite a while. Last month work finally got me a newer machine with winXP. My bosses are not big spenders. First thing I did was install Firefox and Thunderbird on it. At home I have been exclusively using firefox & thunderbird on windoze & linux for a long time. Even got my wife using both on her windoze machine. While on the net recently, I noticed several articles about how IE7 won't be available to win2000 users (like me). I thought Big deal, who cares...?
  10. how far is fc4 from being final? I just recently did a fresh install of fc3, so I guess I am behind the times. Maybe I should have just waited for fc4. I suppose I can use my win2k machine for this course. I don't need the SDK do I, if I use eclipse? I mean, I just need the JRE & eclipse to write, compile & run java progs, right?
  11. I'm starting a college java course soon, and the course states that we will be using eclipse. Of course, there are basic instructions for getting yourself set-up correctly with JRE & Eclipse on your windoze machine, but... I want to use my FC3 machine. I googled a little bit, but just found some unhelpful discussions about it... thanks

    I installed amule

thanks. Actually I decided to install LimeWire on my win2k box. That box is in the same room & connected to the same router as my linux box. But limewire on win2k works fine. I only need a few songs from the 60s, so I didn't think spending time & trouble on linux with amule or something else was worth it.
  13. haven't done this file sharing stuff in a couple of years, but... I just installed amule (went OK). I setup a few preferences, and then connected to a couple of servers), searched on an old song from the 60s, found a bunch of results. Try to d/l some of them, but... they just sit there saying "Waiting..." forever & ever and nothing ever happens. Worthless, right...? Or is it me?
  14. guess I'll give mandriva 2005 a try. I'll buy it somewhere if its available off the shelf. edit: looks like it may not be available on the shelf. I just read a review of mandriva 2005, and it definately sounds good. However, now I am thinking of making my secondary machine (win2k) a dual-boot with mandriva 2005 (and keeping my main machine an FC box). In the past couple days, my new FC3 install has been working nicely. Here's a couple of my initial complaints about FC3 in this forum: Now I find that I am able to view pdf files OK on other sites however. Maybe the problem is just on that one particular site. This may have been a problem with those particular mp3s. I have since dragged & dropped other mp3 files into k3b compilations, and it works fine. So I guess I will keep fc3 for the time being, until I decide to go to fc4. Apologies to cybrjackle for my previous grouchiness about fc3 problems - which probably weren't fc3 problems at all. As I said before, in my short history with linux, FC has been my favorite. However, I still would like to try out a distro where Everything Works out of the box, so thats why I think I'll give mandriva 2005 a try, as a dual-boot on my other machine. thanks!!
  15. thanks, actually I had already been to that page previously, although I haven't done anything yet. I didn't think the newest version 7 of acrobat was required just to view pdf files. I wonder why I could view them just fine with fc2 before I installed fc3? So far, what few distros I have tried, I liked FC2 the best. My probs with fc3 are mostly mine probably. However, I am getting too old to enjoy screwing with stuff I expect to work out of the box. That's why I may try something more "already working" than FC is. Besides, if I install the newest mandriva, the bosses here will let me post in other forums, instead of always banishing me to Other Linux Distros....
  16. If I decide to try mandriva 10.2, I'll probably buy it off the shelf, if I can find it. Both mandrake versions I tried before (8.1 and 9.0) I also bought off the shelf. I like to support mandriva financially. The other distros I've used - RH9, FC2 and FC3 I downloaded free. While we are discussing this, since I have not used mandrake|mandriva in quite some time, let me get a few questions out of the way: from being a member of this board for quite a while, I gather that mp3 works out of the box with mandriva. What about the other stuff - like pdf support and stuff? And I've been using gnome for the past year, so I'm not that familiar with kde - can I use gnome with mandriva? I've never used urpmi|easy urpmi - I hope its better than yum or apt - which I kind of like. Lastly, I like firefox - don't want to use Konq - so hopefully there arent any problems there when using mandriva. thanks
  17. yes, I agree. First thing I did a couple weeks ago after installing FC3, was to head over to fedoraFAQ and replace my original yum.conf with their yum.conf (with livna, dag, and all the good stuff). And then I immediately did the yum check-update, and then the yum installs of various "missing" stuff - like mp3 support, pdf, etc etc. My complaint is, for example, like mentioned above... when I find I need Adobe Acrobat to view some forms on the web, and so I do the yum install of acroreader (exactly as fedoraFAQ says to do) and yet I STILL get error messages when trying to view pdf files on the web. How long have pdf files been around? I mean, its totally stupid that I have to be screwing with this crap - crap that has been a standard for as long as I can remember. Last year I don't remember this little stuff being as much of a hassle with FC2. Once I got my yum.conf replaced with FedoraFAQ's version, and did all the installs of the missing stuff, FC2 worked fine from then on. FC3 has been a dissapointment so far. And another thing, many times while browsing the web with FC3 and Firefox, the browser will just shut down without warning and return me to the desktop. When I go back to the webpage that it happened on, and click on the same link that it happened on, it works fine. This has happened many times. It NEVER happened with FC2. And this is on the same machine. I think I'm gonna try mandriva, whatevers the newest "official" version... is it on 10.2 yet?
  18. is that what my problem is...? you're probably right. The majority of my "linux experiment" has been with FC2. Although before that I was using RH9 for a few months (liked it) and before that, my very first experience was with mandriva, first 8.1 and then a little 9.0. But most of my learning, and problems, and complaints have been while using FC. So what are you suggesting? I know you all are tired of "what distro is right for me..." questions. Maybe I should change distros on this machine before I spend more time, and headaches, getting FC3 working in a usable "home user" way. It is still a fairly new install, and I don't mind putting something else on that will avoid some of these little hassles.
  19. Now I'm trying to view some of my various investment statements (most websites display .pdf) with my FC3 machine. Kept getting message about "you need acrobat version 4.0 or greater..." So I headed over to FedoraFAQ and read about how I should run #yum --enablerepo=dag install mozilla-acroread (as long as I am using their yum.conf (I am). I did that, and it all said Sucessful... However, the financial sites STILL say that I need adobe acrobat to view my statements online. I was viewing .pdf files just fine when I had FC2. This whole "linux experiment" over the past couple years is just getting worse & worse.
  20. I remember FC2 letting you choose programs to always use for certain types of files. For example, I remember selecting XMMS for wav, mp3 and ogg files. So when I double clicked one of those, xmms would start playing it. Now with FC3, it always starts up Helix Player when I double click an audio file. I don't see any way to say "always use Audio Player for this type of file". And Preferred Apps in the menu, only lets you choose Web Browser, Mail Reader, Text Editor, and Terminal preferences... I don't want to see Helix Player ever again. It just says "unsupported format" when I click on mp3s anyway. I did do the xmms mp3 installation, so it plays them fine. However, I want xmms to be the app that opens automatically when I click on audio files. this is more of a hassle than I like, especially for this rinky-dink crap. thanks
  21. hmmm... after googling k3b +fc3 +mp3, it seems that there are quite a few discussions around about various problems... oh well, I have no love of mp3. I generally encode into .ogg anyway. However, I am thinking about buying a new CD player for my car, but one that also in an mp3 player. If I do buy one like that, does that mean that I would be making "data" CDs with k3b instead of "audio" CDs? Would a new car audio CD player that is labeled "mp3 player" also play .oggs?
  22. well, this is on FC3. I posted in this forum cuz I was just looking for some possibilities of what it could be. After installing k3b (yum install k3b) I did a yum install k3b-mp3. Just didn't work like expected. I was just ripping and burning a temporary CD, and thats why in Grip I was choosing "Rip Only", so it would rip into .wav files, and then I would go into k3b and compile the .wavs into a CD. However, I had a few of the songs already done awhile back as .mp3s. Anyway, last night I just decided to re-rip the old mp3 songs into .ogg instead. K3b works fine for .ogg. I still don't know what the problem with mp3 files and k3b is. The reason I posted here is cuz it seems that "Other Linux Distros" is a vast wastland now - not much activity.
  23. Never had a problem with k3b before, but... I was compiling an audio CD, with mostly .wav files, but also a few mp3s... well I got a message on the mp3 files "unsupported format". So, I installed k3b-mp3, and it said "successful". So I got back into k3b, and now even though I drag & drop a .wav file into my compilation (lets say a 5 minute song) k3b will display it as a "MPEG1 LAYER 1" file and show it as 4 seconds long. wtf?? I can't believe its such a hassle to burn a simple audio CD. thanks for any help [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  24. Moondrake is not bad. Masterdrake sounds too close to something naughty. has anybody suggested just Drake Linux ? Or Drakix ? Wizard Linux is pretty good from the poll choices.
  25. Linux XP ? XP Linux ? would Bill mind? Maybe since its a french company, its name should be somehow french related... LePew LInux (pepe le pew) Libre Linux (free or freedom) Facile Linux (easy) Manchot (penguin) Manjoigner (man-connect)
