  1. I deleted the printer, and then added it again. When I was prompted for user name and password, I entered my windoze box username (administrator) & password. When I get to the Print Test Page, it tells me I need a username & password, I enter administrator & the password, then it just re-displays the same prompt again.... So I put in my username (on my linux box) and password, and it just redisplays that same prompt again.... sheessh !! What the hell does it want? After all these years, this stuff isn't any easier !
  2. Yeah, I was using FC back when we were talking.... now I'm giving mandriva 2006 a try. I pretty much like it, although there were a few initial problems.... some user-related, but some not... :D I think I'll stick with mandriva for a while, I've gotten to like urpmi.... In fact, I've gotten to the point where I don't even use my win2k box much anymore... I've probably only gotten onto my win2k box only once or twice this whole month...
  3. ok, when I do that here's what it shows: Description: HP DeskJet 6540 Location: Printer State: idle, accepting jobs. Device URI: smb://HOME/dd-win2k/HP which seems correct. However, if I select Set as Default, it asks me for a username & password... does it want the user name & password on my win2k box. That is what I entered, but it keeps redisplaying the username & password prompt, and that I don't have access to this "server"... I don't know what its talking about... this linux box is mine & mine only and the win2k box is mine & mine only... ! edit: hmm... I'm thinking that maybe I goofed up when adding the printer... I am wondering if I entered my name & password for the username & password... If it was asking for the windoze box username & password, I should have entered "administrator" for username... that's how I log on to my winbox.... How do I edit the settings of the SMB printer I added earlier... to check what I entered..?
  4. thanks again. I installed cups (urpmi cups). no problems. went through the KDE Add Printer thingie again. Selected Smb printer. Seemingly no problems. When I got to the Print Test Page option towards the end, it said "Test page successfully sent to printer...". However, nothing prints. I did what aioshin said about setting cups to start each startup, and I also manually started cups before doing the Add Printer.
  5. thanks for the replies. I forgot for a couple days that I had started this thread.... Anyway, here's what I get: error reading information on service cups: No such file or directory Cannot find cupsd service
  6. Its a great mag. I've been a subscriber for 4 months now... since Nov. 2005. I have also downloaded a few back issues that have aritcles that I'm interested in....
  7. I am trying to set up samba to allow me to print from my linux machine to a printer connected to my win2k machine. It does not seem too complicated, but before I am even doing anything, I get messages about "error connecting to CUPS server, make sure CUPS is running".... or something like that. What is the command to see if something is running or not? From what I understand, to share the printer connected to my win2k box, I should mark it as "share" on the win2k box. I did. Then on my mandriva box, I go to System-->Config-->KDE-->Peripherals-->Printers in order to get to the Add Printer option. Then I should get to the Backend screen and tell it I am adding a SMB printer... blah blah.... That doesn't seem too hard, however, I am getting that CUPS error message right at the beginning.... I thought cups was always running.... how do you see if it is running ? also, how do you make it always start at boot...? thanks

    k3b question

man, this is an ancient thread of mine.... I'm surprised to see it again. Since my original post waaaaay back then, I've bought a mp3 car stereo (last year) (an inexpensive Alpine) and have been compressing my entire vinyl LP and audio CD collections onto mp3 CDs... Oh the joys of being able to put an entire artist's output onto ONE CD.... ! Been using my linux box, and either grip or ripperx to rip, and k3b to burn the mp3 CDs (data CD project). I used to be addicted to Nero but I have pretty much moved all my audio-related computer work to my linux box. Now all I need to do is learn how to use a linux audio editor, such as audacity.... edit: yeah, I always wondered about how Nero has options to: Burn an audio CD, Burn a data CD, or burn an mp3 CD. Hmmm... an "mp3" CD IS a data CD.... I guess Nero wants people to think it does more stuff.... it burns audio CDs ! It burns data CDs ! and it even burns mp3 CDs !!
  9. thanks, I didn't know that. I just thought that 4x & 8x were "normal" burning speeds that every burner supports. Even though faster burners have been out for a while now, I have always selected 4x or 8x to burn pretty much everything. I haven't noticed any problems with k3b & my aOpen burner making discs at 10x, so I guess I can't complain. I was just wondering. thanks again
  10. I formerly had a Sony DVD burner in my linux box, and k3b would burn CDs at 4x, 8x or higher no problem. I pulled out the sony and replaced it with a much newer aOpen DVD burner. The aOpen works fine, and I've burned many CDs with it. I was wondering why k3b always tells me "burner does not support 4x, changing speed to 24x". It says the same thing when I try to use 8x to burn a CD..."burner does not support 8x...". It pretty much burns every CD at an average of 10x, no matter what speed I select. I don't mind, at least for burning audio CDs or data CDs, but I generally like to burn ISOs at 4x... I can't believe a modern DVD burner doesn't support 4x or 8x... or is there something I can do in k3b ? Like I said, not really a problem, just wondering though..
  11. I haven't yet messed around with the kde settings & look 'n feel, and that stuff. I'll maybe do that tonight when I get home from work. Thanks !!
  12. Yes, that is what I did at first. I installed mandriva over my FC4 install, and just left /home sitting there. As you say, I did have many problems. So then I backed up the stuff in /home, re-installed mandriva but this time a complete new install - formatting /home as well. So that is what I have been working with - a fresh install with a fresh /home. So that should not be causing any problems now. Now that I am using KDE, most everything is working well, and I am pretty happy with mandriva. If I log in with a gnome session however, the gnome CD player does not work, both grip & ripperx rip extremely slow - around 1x to 1.5x. There may be other small problems while in gnome that I have forgotten. I'm still intending to install my ubuntu 5.10 that I downloaded ... sometime soon. btw - talking about gnome & kde reminds me of something - I am fairly new to kde, but one of the things I like about gnome is that when I insert a data CD or DVD, an icon appears on the desktop. Also when I plug in a usb stick, an icon comes up in gnome. KDE (at least the way mine works) doesn't do that. I have to double-click on Devices to get to the icons.
  13. I haven't yet installed ubuntu, but I thought it didn't use root like other distros....? After I install mine, I WANT it to use root, its what I'm used to... So do I need to do something during install, or how do you change it to use root after install... or can you ? thanks!
  14. since I have been trying KDE for the past few days, both grip & ripperx rip very fast. The problem must have been with gnome. Weird. I don't have much experience with KDE, but I am getting used to it. All the recent gripes I had with mandriva (very slow ripping speed, audio CDs don't play, and some other gripes) are NOT problems in KDE. I am left with the feeling the mandriva works better with KDE than gnome. In fact, I am liking mandriva quite a bit now...
  15. ok, i was pretty new to mandriva & urpmi, so I wasn't sure. At first, when I used urpmi to install something, it would prompt me to put in the Ultimate Linux Desktop DVD in the drive. Then it stopped asking for the DVD, and showed those messages. Now I am on yet another reinstall of mandriva, have done the easy-urpmi thing again, and it is working great now.
  16. I haven't used mandriva enough to notice the dep diffs in the pkg mgr. Mostly I just installed mandriva, installed a couple of multimedia thingies, and that's it. Last night I d/l'd and burned the ubuntu install CD, and booted with it just to check the integrity. It passed. So I'm gonna install it in a couple days. I decided to burn off alot of my 48GB of obscure & rare music files - to get them safely on CD. Just in case of a screwed-up install.
  17. after trying KDE for a few days, the KsCD works great. When I insert an audio CD, KsCD comes up and starts playing it. Other probs may be related to gnome, guess I'll become a KDE user. thanks!
  18. definately audio CDs, bought at music stores. Is something wrong in the CD setup or something? Maybe that's causing trouble playing music. On my past distros, I just inserted audio CDs, then my distro would start playing them... Mandriva won't do that, although artic said it was gnome's CD Player fault... I would like xmms as my music player app, but its not working automatically when I insert audio CDs, also it can't play mp3s even though I installed xmms-mp3. In KDE, I went into the place where you select your preferred apps for doing stuff, and I put xmms as first preference for audio, but amarok continues to come up first. Seems like a rinky-dink thing, I never had problems before with audio CDs or mp3s with other distros. When I try a reinstall of ubuntu over this mandriva install, I'll see how that works...
  19. If I get a working install of ubuntu, I will need to learn how the pkg mgmt works. I know a little about synaptic but not much. Isn't there a gui software management/installer also? I mean, something like browsing installable s/w, and then picking what you want ? Mostly what I have used in the past has been apt, then yum... Haven't used urpmi much, but on my current install of mandriva 2006 I have used it a bit, and I like it so far...
  20. a couple days ago when I d/l ubuntu, I was meaning to d/l kubuntu... didn't realize until it was already done... oh well. Personally, I'm much more used to gnome (due to most of my experience being on the FC distros). Main thing I don't like about gnome is there not being a "copy or move?" option when you drag & drop files. Oh yeah, and the CD player is broke. This is the first time I burned a distro onto a DVD - I just used k3b and said "burn the image...". Or is there some weird options you are supposed to select...? Plus, I've burned lots of distros onto CDs and never had a bad md5 before... Can't wait to get home from work and d/l & burn the CD this time. Too bad I have to go to work everyday... it gets in the way sometimes...!
  21. I don't know about the "mount" thing. I just stick an audio CD in the drive, open xmms, select Play Directory, click mnt/cdrom and it starts playing the CD. On the other hand, playing mp3s - xmms doesnt' do it. If I double-click an mp3 file, xmms will appear for a few seconds then dissapear... Also, if I right-click an mp3 file, select Open With xmms, same thing happens, xmms comes up, then disappears... Yes, I did install the xmms-mp3 add-on. Is there something else to do...? edit: Other distros I tried played CDs and mp3s OK, I wonder what is different this time around...? I've been using KDE for the past day, and amarok works pretty good...
  22. yeah, when I noticed the k3b md5 error, I just thought it was cuz I sometimes start burning discs right away, before the check is finished... I just booted with it again, selected Check Disk Integrity (on the very first menu), and it FAILED. It said the "parted" portion on the disc was bad. I'll d/l just the CD tonight, and re-burn it. I know the "live" option of the bad DVD works OK.
  23. hmmm... when I burned the DVD which includes the normal ubuntu install, and also a live CD, k3b said something about failing md5 sum.... didn't know if the md5 sum was applicable to the DVD with both things on it... when I reinstall ubuntu, I'll do the self-checker as you suggested...
  24. gowator: The ubuntu 5.10 I d/l was the DVD version, which has the normal distro install, as well as the bootable Live CD (you select which you want at the boot prompt). The other day I was using the Live option just to check out what ubuntu "looked like". It worked fine. I know that that was another option, plus my other box (win2k) is yet another option - so no real worries for a screw-up during install... ha ha. I worry anyway - its just my nature...! edit: as I mentioned before, the Other Linux Distros is my favorite forum on mandrivausers.org. I think the "best" (for me) distros that I have any experience with were the various FC distros - I used FC3 for quite a while with almost NO minor troubles at all. The only help I had to come here for during FC3 was for some more complicated stuff - like installing Java, or installing Eclipse... All the routine, normal stuff always worked great with FC3 - and if I goofed anything up, it was pretty easy to fix (and there's lots of good FC help all over the web). I just want some more experience with some other popular distros, so I'm trying both mandriva and ubuntu.
  25. when I drag & drop an mp3 track onto xmms, it says that WAV is not recognized, but as mentioned before, if I select Play Directory, and click mnt/cdrom, it starts playing OK. I'll play around for a little while, and try out KDE also. thanks
