i am running mandriva 2008.1, fully updated,
i was running 2008.1 and i installed 2009.1 from the live cd, but kept my /swap and /home, i didn't like dolphin to much and it seemed a bit 'buggy',
i had made an image of my 2008.1 / partition (using partimage) and decided to image it back over 2009.1,
i have just noticed that my /swap does not mount at cold boot or a reboot but i can mount it through disk management,
if i logout and login it stays mounted,
does anyone know how i can fix this so my /swap mounts at boot

thanks, it worked :D ,
i had a feeling it might be that, but i went with the default at drakboot - ah well

i am booting various o/s's from grub, mostly with no problems,
the only one i am having a little trouble with is linux on my ide secondary master - at the moment its mandriva 2009.1,
i boot into grub with mandriva 2009.0 on my primary master and windows on my primary slave,
i also have an entry in grub for windows on my secondary master - with this configuration i have no problem booting to any of the 4 operating systems (i have 2 x windows controlled by ntldr)
when i physically swap drives on my secondary master to 2009.1 all i get is a white screen
i added 2009.1 via drakboot,
i know that this is probably a minor issue but at the moment i can't seem to figure it out,
any ideas ?
(i know 2009.1 works as my motherboard supports the F11 boot options)
here is my menu.lst, its the last entry i am having headaches with

decided to swap the usb adapter for a wireless pci card (don't tell the misses :D )
uninstalled the bcmrndis driver
problem number 2 - inserted the pci card, booted my pc, extracted the .inf and .sys,
installed the driver and - nothing,
rebooted my pc - black screen, and again, and again - finally got it to boot,
checked
ndiswrapper -l
pc locked up, reboot and black screen
tried again and this time it told me the driver was installed - but no card,
checked
lspci
and its listed,
went to set up a new connection and it says there is no device,
uninstalled the driver, took out the pci card, closed the case and inserted my ethernet cable,
no lock ups, no black screens, internet running fine, wireless in the bin,
problem solved and i'm happy
thanks for trying, i just got fed up with going over the same things

i've got a usb wireless dongglything,
its a belkin g+ usb adapter, i have a belkin wireless g adsl gateway,
i connect by ethernet cable at the moment but i want to go wireless,
i have coppied the bcmrndis.inf and rndismpk.sys from the windows install disk and tried mmc to enable my adapter,
problem is it won't work, it says there is no interface,
i multiboot so i installed the adapter in windows and tried mmc using c/program files > > > .inf, but it still gives the same error
this is my ndiswrapper output
[dave@localhost ~]$ sudo ndiswrapper -l Password: bcmrndis : invalid driver!
another problem i have is that my mdv will not boot with the adapter plugged in, yet when its fully booted and i plug the adapter in it correctly recognises it,
i have -
ndiswrapper
bcm43xx-fwcutter
b43-fwcutter
all enabled
can anyone point me in the right direction
thanks

i understand that a little,
i replaced the {name-your-????-image-here} with the relevant images from boot/ in pclinuxos,
does it make any difference that i installed pclos 'fully' - ie. with no other disks installed and grub installed to the mbr,
so in reality i have 2 versions of grub - 1 x mandriva and 1 x pclos,
(if i boot via F11 and choose the pclos disk then i am presented with grub, with 2 options, pclos and failsafe)
so i would be booting from mdv's grub into pclos's grub - not straight into the operating system
could this be the confusing hd2 and hd0 ?
do i need to boot to pclos's grub from mandriva ?
be aware that i am no stretch of the imagination a linux expert - but i learn fast, and forgive me if i'm talking rubbish
thanks for all your help so far

progress so far,
i've been working on this a while now, this entry
title PCLOS
root (hd2,0)
kernel /boot/{name-your-kernel-image-here} root=/dev/sdc1 ro
initrd /boot/{name-your-initrd-image-here}
only gives me error 17, i have tried adding and editing lines - nothing works
when i use this entry
title pclos
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdc1 ro
initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.img
i can boot into pclinuxos without sound or networking (and maybe a few others, but i want to resolve this issue first)
is there anything else i should be adding to my entry in menu.lst
(ps, my disks are now all in order)
thanks

hi scarecrow,
i was just about to unmount my sata drive and new drive then re-mount as sdd and sdc,
the new drive is a 'mess around' drive, so i would like to keep the 2nd windows option (play hdd) as i know this entry works with windows on the drive,
would there be any problem keeping the entry ?
could i just edit menu.lst to add your suggestion to the end ?
would this same line work with any flavour of linux installed on the hdd ?
(with kernel image edited)

the pclos hdd has only the root partition mounted in mandriva, swap and home are not mounted,

hi all,
i have just installed a hdd in my tower, installed pclinuxos 2009 and alls working ok,
the problem is when i boot into my mandriva i cannot add pclos as a boot option in my grub bootloader,
i've tried everything that seems reasonable in mandriva to add it but all i get is error 13,
i have booted into pclos but the sound and networking was not detected, so this is not an option
the hdd in question is on my secondary ide, set to slave and on the middle connector,
its showing as sdc (/media/sdc3) in my disk management
i cannot add this drive to my primary ide, as i dual boot windows already and my windows hdd is currantly on my primary/slave
my motherboard supports the F11 option (choose boot device), so i know that pclos is running ok,
but i would prefer to have the boot option in grub
any ideas

after more headaches and configurations, i have finally solved the problem
believing that mandriva was not the problem, left me with one other option
i changed my graphics card for a radeon 9250, enabled compiz and it works,
configured compiz how i want it - changed back to the 9550, white screen only,
changed back to the 9250 - full compiz,
tried the 9550 in a pclinuxos box fully configured - white screen only
my conclusion is that i have a faulty radeon 9550 graphics card
this issue is solved,
thanks

hi,
i am running mdv2009 one from a fresh install of a 'live' cd, problem is my compiz is not working,
i have tried all the configurations i know but as soon as i go to system settings > desktop-system settings > configure desktop effects > general and tick the box,
log-out and log-in, i am presented with a white screen then a dark gray screen - with no desktop,
the only way i can get out of this is by logging out and logging back into kde3, unticking the above box, logging out and logging back into kde4 (with no compiz in kde3 either)
i have tried changing the driver from the default ATI one, but my system becomes unusable and i have to use knoppix to re-edit my xorg.conf
i have also tried control center > hardware > configure 3D desktop effects > advanced settings and choosing xgl
with this i get compiz, but its very slow and 'jerky', infact everything is slow and i have to change back to native support
any help or pointers would ease my headache
i have 1gb ddr400 ram, p4 3.4 cpu and a radeon 9550 256ddr graphics card
thanks

problem is now solved
i have reluctantly done a fresh install of 2009 one

As I said install kernel-desktop-latest, as root
urpmi kernel-desktop-latest
ran this and it downloaded the package, it installed ok,
i re-booted but still had the same options in my grub screen, same desktop and same info in sysinfo,
i tried re-enabling virtualbox (just to check) and got the same message about 'spawning session' then it just hangs and i have to kill it,
thanks for your help so far

i only have desktop586 2.6.24.4-1mnb and desktop586 2.6.24.7-1mnb as extra boot options in my /grub/menu.lst,
i installed 2008.1 from a live cd, but had a lock-up problem so i upgraded via easyurpmi and a terminal and ran the update command after the upgrade,
everything else seems to be running ok (apart from no compiz for a while but i changed the driver)

i have upgraded my 2008.1 to 2009.0 but i seem to have a little problem,
i need to have sun virtualbox working but i need the 2009.0 kernel,
can anyone help me change/upgrade my kernel
i have p4 3.4 prescott cpu, 1gb ddr4 pc3200 ram and a radeon 9550 256mb ddr graphics card,
if it helps there is this output

thats right, i did an upgrade via easyurpmi and a terminal from 2008.1,
i'll start a new thread on how to upgrade my kernel - after i try a clean install of 2009.0 on a spare hdd i have,
thanks for your help
-
not to clever at the moment with kernels, but my guess is you mean my main linux kernel
i checked in my software and i have
kernel-desktop586-2.6.24.4-1mnb
kernel-desktop586-2.6.24.7-1mnb
kernel-desktop586-2.6.24.7-2mnb
all enabled,
and
virtualbox-kernel-2.6.27.4-desktop586-2mnb
i don't have a virtualbox-kernel-2.6.24.?-desktop586-?mnb
(i was going to ask why my drivers are all 2008.1, is this related ?)
sorry if this is wrong and is not what you meant
-
hi,
i'm running mdk2009.0 one and i can't seem to get the version of virtualbox in my software running - all it gives me is the message 'spawning session',
is there an rpm of the full version around (free version) ?
i've been to sun but they only have a version for 2008, the same with rpmfind,
can anyone point me in the right direction - or even help get my copy working
thanks

thanks for the help,
i worked out that if i run XFdrake as root and change my radeon driver to xorg > ati,
log out and log in in drak3d,
change my options to compiz,
