  1. I had a hell of a time trying to add different mirrors again today, manually. Then I went back to easyurpmi, and it added all the mirrors the first time. I have no idea why i have so much trouble adding mirrors.

I can now play the dvd, so consider this solved.

  2. I can play other dvds.

I have messed around for ages trying to install libdvdcss, as it wasn't in my add/remove software. I removed my medias and readded them. That was a night mare, as it was last time.

I eventually just got libdvdcss2 from pbone.

My dvd drive is working as it plays other commercial dvds. The disk that wont play on my mandy 2009 will play in the tele dvd player.

    Any help most appreciated.

  3. I'm so happy with my 2009 install, I will wait to see how everyones 2009 spring goes. I updated kde to 4.2.1, its not perfect, but still great. I expect the KDE4.2.2 with 2009.1 to be better again. I like the idea of the refreshed security centre.

Looking forward to hearing about everyones new OS!

    [root@localhost matthew]# mii-tool

    eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok

    So, it appears its ok.

I reloaded filezilla, and rather than quick connect, I made a new host/connection, and it connected fine.

File transfer was amazingly fast for most of it, but at times horribly slow. A few of the files are corrupted on the xbox, so I'm hoping this was the reason for the shockingly slow transfer.

  5. Ian, thank you, here is what I got:

    1: Ping 192.168.0.3

    64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=55 ttl=64 time=0.069 ms

    64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=56 ttl=64 time=0.068 ms

2: I get a green link light on my Xbox and an orange one on my PC?? I thought they whould be both green?

3: I have been setting a static IP of 192.168.0.1 through the network centre.

There we go, I'm afraid my networking skills are terrible. Ian thank you so much.

  6. Hello all. I'm trying to back up my Xbox hard drive before I install the latest version of Gentoox. (Gentoo adapted for the Xbox).

I was able to do this years ago, but can't seem to now!

I only have one net work card, so I have to disconnect that from the net, through MCC and then I connect the PC and the XBOX up using a cross over cable. Reconfigure my network card again through MCC to have a static IP. Then I've tried to use Filezilla FTP.

    The XBOX details are:

    Static IP of 192.168.0.3

    Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

    Default gateway 192.168.0.1

    password xbox

IIRC I had to use port 21.

I'm actually wondering if my cross over cable has died. I usually connect to the net through an asus network hub. Perhaps I can use a normal network cable and go through the hub.

I've always struggled with networking.....This was the very original reason for trying Linux was windows networking is so damn hard.

    Any help most appreciated.

  7. Thanks Nexus....I agree that it needs improvement and the click box is my wish. Its a bit daunting waiting for 50+gb to transfer, I have no idea how long it takes on my new box.

The light on my drive has stopped flashing so I pretty sure its all done. Didn't actually take note of the bottom of Dolphin at the time.

  8. I've just done a major copy of data from an external disk drive I use for backup to my desktop.

At first a box pops up showing the data transfer, but then it disappears. How can I tell when the data transfer is complete?

  9. Not sure if this is in the right forum...Please move if not.

I have a raid array separate from my linux install. When I go to save documents and the like I have to click up through the file system, back to /mnt then my raid array and then to the directory i want.

Is it possible to put a link in my /home directory that I can click that will take me straight to my raid array?

    Thank you.

  10. Tux, thanks heaps for that reply! Very much appreciated.

    # fdisk -l 2>/dev/null|grep "^Disk /dev/[h|s]"
    Disk /dev/sda: 640.1 GB, 640135028736 bytes
    Disk /dev/sdb: 640.1 GB, 640135028736 bytes
    Disk /dev/sdc: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes

So I was right, my raid array consists of sda and sdb.

Perhaps I need to wait for 2009.1.........

  11. Hello all,

I've been trying to monitor the health of my hard drives, Once bitten twice shy.

I have installed smartmontools, as this appears to be the tool of choice for modern drives, and there doesn't appear to be a wester digital linux tool.

Upon installing smartmontools, I was told:

    Edit /etc/smartd.conf

and add uncomment the DEVICESCAN option and set email to recieve alerts.

I have one boot drive, sdc and a raid array which I guess must be sda and sdb?

Can someone please help me with this?

On the smartmontools web site it shows a GUI, is this available in linux? I sure hope so. I've looked through my menus and I cannot see smartmontools anywhere.

  12. Exactly. that issue came by before, and then it solved the problem by disabling legacy fullscreen support in Compiz.

But this workaround doesn't bring the solution this time.

Rats! I may just wait for 2009.1 and see what theyre offering. KDE4.2 is good for the minute, and i dont wanna risk breaking it.

  13. And worked out quite well.

    Experienced some improvement in performance.

But on the other hand i am missing titlebars above any programscreen this far.

I think I had this when I upgraded to 4.2. I had to disable, I think, legacy window support IIRC.

  14. So, you don't have a complete (or correct) KDE 4.2 installation. The KDE VFS is missing rather basic stuff.

Does your default user belong to the "optical" group? (might also be named "cdrom" in Mandriva, dunno).

When I installed it installed the server kernel, I think this is due to the fact I'm running raid and a dual cpu. How can I add this KDE VFS?

I checked in user management in MCC, and all I can see is that the user belongs to its own group, I cant see anything about optical or cdrom? Did I look in the right area?
