Hi all. My ol' faithful has finally driven me up the wall and is due to be replaced. I think the mother board has died..Anyways time for a new system. YAY!!!! :)
Its main purpose is to store many pictures, college reports, browsing and printing. I am considering an acer aspire one for everyday workhorse around the house.
Unfortunately at this point in time I still rely on windows to a certain extent so will have to dual boot still.
Data protection (espcially the photos) is critical. I do perform back ups to an external drive from time to time.
I haven't started to look at which bits I'll use yet. I could consider RAID1 (am I correct that raid one uses two drives to house 2 copies of everything??? Is this available on normal everyday motherboards??)
I am thinking of having a separate data partition, which windows and mandy can both access. Am I better off using FAT32, or is mandy safe with NTFS??? I have a copy of 2008.1, I've been using 2008 though, as something broke in my 2008.1 install :(
Given the system I have been using is 5 years old I'm open to any suggestions of ideas I may have missed. I know I want things like wireless and a memory card reader.

Thanks all. I guess that just shows how far linux has come in the last few years, as from what I can remember laptops and linux were a nightmare.

Hi all,
I'm looking for a notebook/laptop, and think for my line of work a Ferrari or Asus Lambo laptop should help build some confidence in my customers.
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with either of the above using Mandy.
Any help most appreciated.

Hi Ian,
Am on line now, both the windows and linux boxes running. No drama today. So when I pinged the router all was good.
Its only sometimes it wont connect. I am guessing that there is an address clash.
Whats your theory? Should I assign a permanent address to my linux box????
-
Thanks IanW. Is there anything about linux your not amazing with?????
Finally got back to my pc.
Here are the results for ifcong -a

No I didn't assign an address. I just let the install do its thing.

Hi all,
I got 2008.1 up and running now, but problem is I can not connect to the net if the other computer on the network (running windows) is already on line. I had to turn off the router and turn it on again. I have tried to connect via MCC with out restarting the router, but it wont happen.
Any suggestions?
Thanks all

Hi all,
I found the source of the problem I think. Well it works now anyways.
I followed : https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...ectory&st=0
It seems my old grub couldn´t access vmlinuz, and I set up a chain load and its all good. Im adding this through 2008.1. Yay!
:D :D :D :D

Thanks John, The reason its all listed in /mnt is because I was accessing 2008.1 from my 2008 install and mounted the 2008.1 partition under /mnt/mandriva_2008_1.
/home is a separate partition with 5gb still free also.
Why do I have no /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/modules.dep?
-
I just had a look at /lib/modules and have a look at this:
/mnt/mandriva_2008_1/lib/modules/2.6.24.4-desktop-1mnb
Am I right in thinking a folder has been created called 2.6.24.4-desktop-1mnb rather than 2.6.24.4-desktop-1mdv??????
Should I just rename this folder?
I've had a look in
/lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/modules.dep
and all the lines have -1mnb in them, not 1mdv, I am stumped!
-
I have had a look through there, but cant see anything about failing to build? Is there somewhere else that they might leave any clues or can I pause the screen during boot???
Thanks all
-
Adamw, thanks,
I took a look at var/log/messages and I continually see the following
May 28 03:03:09 localhost modprobe: FATAL:Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/modules.dep: No such file or directory May 28 03:03:09 localhost modprobe: FATAL:Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/modules.dep: No such file or directory
I guess that is a file that contains my hardware setup information????
Anyways it is missing or corrupted, Any ideas?

Ok, I done a reinstall.
First time I put the bootloader on the MBR. In the reinstall I put it on the partition that 2008.1 is on. It still has no mouse.
I tried to run mousedrake, but had no luck.
I'm stumped as 2008 went on perfectly from dvd (thanks to aussie john for copying it for me), so I presumed 2008.1 would have been simple.

Hello all,
I have been dual booting mainly xp and mandriva 2008 for sometime now. I had mandrake 9 and 2005 LE installed as well, but 9.0 does not like my usb mouse and LE was a bit unstable so I used 2008 all the time.
The current issue of APC (Australian Personal Computer) has the 2008.1 cd isos included with it, so I thought, great I will install that. I put it on my mandrake 9.0 partition. I share a home patition between them all.
The installation went really well. It asked if I like to copy the cds to the hard drive and continue installation from there, and I did that. Upon first boot I was prompted to do the survey thing and I tried to, but it said my email format was wrong. No big deal I thought.
Then when I tried to use 2008.1 it was a bit slow and unstable. I eventually thought, I will reboot it.
During boot I got some failures and then the mouse did not work at all.
I have since checked the md5sums of the isos and they are all good.
Is it best to try a reinstall or to try and repair this installation?
Thanks Matt

Hi all,
Im running 2008, with a HP psc 1315 printer. It prints text blue rather than black. I have even gone to the length of downloading the driver through the HP website. No luck everything is still blue.
Its not the ink itself as I can scan fine in black, and it works fine under windows.
Any ideas guys?
-
Ok thanks guys. I'll have to get on it.
As for this:
I stupidly accidentally deleted my Home icon as well. :wall:Cheers. John.
Nice to know this kinda thing happens to experienced users. Sorry John, but that is funny.

I know my own Western Digital usb external drive has to be powered from the wall. If you could get a timer to run that then it may work for you. I dont sorry....
I only use mine for backing up my pictures and files and hence only gets turned on once in a while.

Hi all
I was installing the driver for my printer and my pc crashed. I had downloaded the file to my desktop and was executing the sh ****.run from there and it crashed.
no dramas I thought, I restarted mandriva, but my desktop is littered with files from the build. I have since done a successful driver install, but my desktop is a war zone. Is there any easy way to clear my desktop of these files? or do I delete them one by one?

I dont know....all I know is that they fail to build or load (something along those lines). Do you know where I can find the log file of the boot process?
-
Is there a way to stop these modules trying to load during boot?
-
Thanks all.
I updated the kernel, but not the source or devel!!!!!! Silly me.
Installed the right source and devel and it worked first time. Thank you everyone.
The only issue I have is during boot in verbose mode, because I messed around, it tries to load the two nvidia modules, 76xx and 96 xx. Is there some way to remove these?
Thank you everyone for persevering with me...This 3d stuff is great

Sorry speedball2, Ive tried but I get the following error after I try to compile the new kernel module
NVIDIA: left KBUILD. -> done. -> Kernel module compilation complete. ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s). Please see the log entries 'Kernel module load error' and 'Kernel messages' at the end of the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for more information. -> Kernel module load error: insmod: error inserting './usr/src/nv/nvidia.ko': -1 Invalid module format
From what I understand, using this method do I have to do this everytime I do a kernel update?
Suggestions for new hard drive partitions

Thanks IanW.
Is raid1 over the top for a home system, when I do regular backups? I guess for the price of an extra hard drive its good value, and piece of mind.
I've done a bit of reseach on raid1, but still a bit unsure. If there is a fault on one of the drives, does raid1 pick this up automatically, or do you have to manual force a check?
With my data, I intend to link the windows my docs to the shared data partition and do the same from linux. I'm still undecided on what file system to use...Bit more thought needed.
