Hi all, the first thing a newbie (me) will look for after weeks spent to configure his system, is the way to reinstall it in case of new problems so my question is : which system is the best to save the system partitions ? in my case I have (/) & (/home ) is it partimage or mondorescue to be used ? is it common to have a system or data saveguard on Linux ? thanks [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  4. Hi all, to-day I started on the failsafe branch at lilo's window just to check what would happens I ended up with a login on command line and i didn't know what to do there in the end I wanted to reboot but unluckily there was no response to shutdown -h now or halt I had to do a killall to get out of there and I wonder : 1 what is this failsafe for ? 2 How to come out of a man's page which doesn't give me back hand or reboot out of the command line session ? mount/unmount

Hi all, Is not it strange that the user couldn't mount or unmount the floppy's files or CD's ? often there is problem about copying a file to floppy or just to format floppy if we could mount and unmount the floppy on the desktop it would be much simpler like it is on Suse

    "System freeze"

I never could get Mandrake 10.0 Official issue installed on my 2 computers due to freezes during install process or afterward in the few minutes following the first reboot I got my 4 CD's from Ikarios and checked the CD's read/write quality by copying them on my HD
  9. Hi all, Can we speak about a Linux fully compatible PC or rather a Mandrake 10.0 fully compatible PC or a Sude 9.1 fully compatible PC ? It is important for a newcomer to Linux to KNOW what PC will work best with the Linux distributions and as far as I know we can only check the components against such or such distributor's lists Why not give the newcomers every month or so the identification of three linux compatible PC with the address where we can order it and the price ? a basic PC for wordprocessing & internet a family PC to comply with the various needs of a family a top computer for the masters As you probably know : choosing a new computer is difficult for a newbie and especially if he has to check every component : graphic card, sound chip and so on ... I wouldn't have chosen by chance my last computer bought last year in june the identity of the motherboard wasn't even indicated on the book ! [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]

  19. I all, I have a certain number of sound applications not working and I wonder If there is a method to check (and fix) all the sound system on mandrake 9.1 gnome-sound-recorder, krec ans xmms cannot operate properly example : L'application « gnome-sound-recorder » (processus 3186) s'est bloquée à la suite d'une erreur fatale. (Aborted) I can open gnome-sound-recorder and close it without problem but if I clic on "record" the window freezes where can I start from ? thanks for your answer
  20. I think I have to go back and check my sound card how can I do that is there a method to check the whole sound system on mandrake 9.1 ? can I start from this indication : L'application « gnome-sound-recorder » (processus 3186) s'est bloquée à la suite d'une erreur fatale. (Aborted) thanks for your help
  21. In Mandrake, no. Debian has a few apps that might work. Xwave might work fine (haven't tried it yet) But no and I haven't seen anything new coming up so waiting for a newer distro won't help either. This is one case where the old simple was the way to go and such a simple process is being overthought. Hell I'd even install a gnome app to make it work. do you know the command : cat /dev/dsp >file.au ? to register a vocal message and cat file.au > /dev/dsp ?
  22. don't tell me there is nothing simple in Linux to replace the good old cassette recorder of WIN98SE that I am using everyday ? I tried to install audacity this morning and after some work there is still a few dependencies missing so ther is no simple solution to register souns from the microphone in order to send a sound file in line ? is this the case ? so I will have to wait for a new linux distro thanks anyway
  23. Hi all, how to configure arts to be able to use Krec ? is there a simple way to use it ? what is the procedure to be able to record my voice from a microphone ? thanks for your help
