  1. Well the different tools to control and set up samba are great, I've actually been debating about looking into them for a good while, but my issue is I can use smbpasswd -a user and there is no entry in /etc/samba/smbpasswd it is as if the user somewhere along the line just gets lost before it gets saved.

  2. I've come to notice this over the past few installs of mandriva on various boxes. Gnormalize is available as an rpm, but when installed recently in the past year or so, the package wavegain is missing thus audio files can not be normalized. Has any one else noticed this or is it just me missing something here?

  3. I'm looking for a network monitor that will run on a headless server (my file server) And preferably dumps out the data so I could view it on line at something such as http://192.168.1.150, I have found a few programs but nothing that comes with Mandriva, and honestly I do not want to compile something especialy on the server. Any one have any suggestions?

  4. I assume Ian ment to dissable your sata drives, and then try to boot from the live cd, if you can get in, great, if not, then the problem may be else where, but either way, when you find out if you can or can not boot off the live cd, you can renable the sata to go back into windows or access the sata drives in general...

  5. MPlayer works wonderfuly for me, actually it's about all I use for video files. But there is also Xine and VLC

    urpmi mplayer-gui

as for burning dvd videos, I use k9copy. It also shrinks movies down to fit on a 4.7GB DVD

    urpmi k9copy

both reside in the plf repositories

  6. (sorry Dark, I accidentally ignored your point earlier)

    No bigge at all...

Though On second thought I did come to wonder if I was in the O/P's position and was to shell out the money for PWP I would go for the subscripion anyway, on grounds IIRC the subscription is only ten dollars more, and could most likely borrow a friends computer or connection to aquire 2008.1 and 2009.0 PWP And by pass the issue if possible.

Also IIRC when pricing PWP for purchase latter on in the year, I did notice that yea, there is the option to buy and covers pwp and a few months of updates, and then there is the subscription for a year including pwp releases.

  7. could possibly look on the dvd for where the hdlist.cz files are (I think there is three of them) And then add them localy like:

    urpmi.addmedia local /mnt/LXFDVD102/subdirectory_with_hdlist.cz_here

Don't think you even need the hdlist.cz file at the end, just the directory...at least that is how I had the occasional local repository I'll create on my hard drive.

  8. Just out of interest, how do you organise the file permissions? Is it ext2/ext3 formatted, in which case do you have to do anything special with the read/write permissions so that different users can access the same files? Seems like a dumb question but I thought by default files and directories which you create aren't world-read/writeable?

Well, both systems are maintained by me, I use my laptop, my fiance has her Desktop, I map the users to anon and anon is mapped to the home account so both systems can access eachothers drives as if they owned them. Both /home is in ext3 We are the only ones that are allowed in a house of five since the other three think windows is the shit.

  9. On my box, PC1 is set as 192.168.1.110 On PC2 the IP is 192.168.1.105

So on PC1 which is the NFS server, I have the Host Access set as 192.168.1.105 That ensures only my laptop may connect to it. Though if trust everyone on the network can be left as *

You may need to restart the nfs server, which is in the menu, I think Under options or Server.

  10. I do use NFS on my two mandriva boxes.

I set up sharing on pc1 for music and videos

on pc2 indeed go to mcc>network sharing>use NFS shares If it is not intalled it will ask you if you want to install it. There you can search for the nfs server (pc1) and it will show you the shares available, from there, you need to select mount points on pc2 and set any options you may want. Then through Konqueror go to storage media and should see the shares as unmounted nfs shares. Right click on them and can mount them. That's how I do it. Brain is kinda fried so it's not real detailed...like at all...

  11. X seems to want to hang after the computer is left idle for five plus minutes, I come back to use the computer, and it is unrespensive, though I can drop down to console and kill X and then log back into KDE. I have noticed that it does not happen if Compiz is active. This computer is running Mandriva cooker, Kernel is 2.6.24, running on a Nvidia Video Card.

I have had this issue since 2007.1 Official, does not matter what version I do run, this is a reoccuring issue. And frustrating especially when I do not or can not run compiz...which is most of the time. Any one have this issue, or had this issue and know the solution?
