  1. Ircd-Hybrid is the irc server used by Efnet.

Ircd won't start as root, so if i simpy put the path to the executable in rc.local it won't start because it refuses to start as root.I want to make it start ON BOOT, but with a normal user.THE PROBLEM is that it doesn't have any options were u can tell it what user should run under, NO, it runs as the user u ARE CURENTLY logged on.

So how can i make it start up on boot?

  2. I just installed Ircd-hybrid 7 on my lan server.Since it won't start as root, i have to start it with a normal account.

If i put the path to ircd in /etc/rc.d/rc.local, how can i make it start with a normal user account, since it won't start as a root, because i did a man ircd, but i didn't see any useful option.....

  3. For your knowledge rcxau, i know there is su and i allways want to know how to do things in text mode.I am able to configure a system, compile the kernel, make the net and network work without using kde or gnome.I try not to depend on kde/gnome for anything i do(although surfing the net with mozilla is so much nicer than with links/lynx).

  4. I downloaded the drivers from realtek, which are actually alsa 0.9.rc5, compiled them, followed the instrunctions from realtek and i got my onboard sound card working.

The problem is that i have at home a 5.1 speaker system. In windows, you can select in alc's drivers to remap the microfone and line in to subwoofer and rear speakers, thus enabling me to hear on all 5.1 speakers

But in linux i have no idea how to do this, and so i hear sound only from my front speakers.

    Any ideas ??????

Btw: i also tried with 0.9.1 final, but to no avail.

  5. I modified /etc/sysconfig/network to change my hostname. It works, but when i start kde, just before entering graphic mode it tells me : host name lookup failure.

So, what other files shoud i modify,in order to get rid of that warning.

  6. When i enter Kde 3.1 as root, i can't select anything on the desktop with the mouse, i can't do a right click or anything.

I can move the mouse though and i can click on the menus and the taskbar, but when i try to do smth on the desktop, the mouse cursor changes into a small x and i can't do anything with the mouse.

    PS: I have Mandrake 9.1

  7. And you took their firewall config --> what are you talking about ? From which website, for which firewall .. ???????

    From here :

    http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HO...-2.4.X-STRONGER

I knew about pcflank, it's not that good.

'Which ports should I let my users to access' .. which is easier to answer.

This is the question i should have asked, it makes much more sense.

The "server" is a P200 mmx, 32mb , 1mb S3 running Mdk 9.And i am not running shorewall, or firestarter, or smth similar.

  8. # The smbpasswd file is only required by a server doing authentication, thus

    # members of a domain do not need one.

    encrypt passwords = yes

    smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd

Just a guess, try comenting the smb passwdfile. If that's not it, beats me, cause u have guest ok = yes, so.......don't know, sorry.
