  1. ffi, Wait, a mini breakthrough, I do now see the new entry under Style. But now I am even more confused. What's a theme in KDE? Does style apply to buttons and such? That's what seems to have changed when I clicked on the new entry. I want to change my windows borders and colors, etc. Don't know how.
  2. If I go to Style, I see 3 tabs with Style, Effects, Toolbar, but nothing that looks likes Themes. I tried another theme from kde-look (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Domino+for+Mandriva+2008?content=69996). The instructions seem so basic, 'install with urpmi'. I did this, but the Domino theme does not appear in Control Center>Appearance & Themes>Theme Manager. So I cannot apply it. I tried re-installing and got the message that the package was already installed. I also tried the 'Install New Theme' button in Theme Manager, but again the file is not recognized with the Theme Files filter option. Why is KDE so difficult to theme?
  3. I'm new to KDE. I usually use Gnome, but I'm trying to learn more. I've just installed Mandriva Free 2008 (Official). My problem is that I can't seem to theme KDE correctly. I've searched and read posts in these forums, but they have not helped. Here's the deal: I've downloaded a couple of themes from kde-look, then I go to the Control Center > Appearance & Themes > Theme Manager, I get a window that has an 'install themes' button, but when I click on this and navigate to the correct folder, no theme file is detected. There is another button listed as 'Filters' which only shows 'Theme files' as a choice, nothing else is available. So the install themes function does not allow me to select tar.gz files for example. (Can you even do this?) The various posts I've read tend to say, "just click on 'install theme'", but this doesn't seem to be working for me. Any thoughts?
  4. I have just installed Mandriva Free 2008. I like dark themes and installed my favorite one. Using 2007, I was able to go into the Options menu in OpenOffice to change the page color from black to white, or something else. With 2008, I go to Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org and try to click on Appearance (or anything else in the list) OpenOffice freezes and I have to force quit. I tried removing it and re-installing, but there is no change. Any ideas?
  5. Thanks Scarecrow and John. Sane-backends are installed actually, with xsane reading the scanner as plustek (as scarecrow mentioned). I think I'll try John's advice and move up to the official release. I'll see what happens then. I am fairly new to Linux, having started with Ubuntu, but I have found Mandriva to work very well overall on my rather old machine (HP Omnibook 6100). I wouldn't be surprised if everything just worked! Many thanks.
  6. I have an odd problem. I'm using Mandriva Free 2008 RC2 and a Canon N1240U scanner. I have xsane installed and another scanning app called gscan2pdf. If I use the latter, then there are no problems detecting the connected scanner and actually scanning something. Everything works great. In xsane everything starts normally. The app starts, detecting the scanner which is correctly identified, but when I click on the 'scan' button xsane seems to progress through a scan -- and even gives me a blank page in a file. The problem is that the scanner does not react in any way; no light, no movement, zilch. Any ideas? [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  7. This is why I like this forum so much. Here it is . . .
  8. OK then, 3 more to go now. Too bad; I have an awesomely nice desktop this month. Guess you all will just have to wait a bit.
  9. Thanks, dude67, but I when I click on the reply button I see nothing that you mention. There is a text box which I am now in obviously, and below it are two buttons labeled 'Toggle Side Panel' and 'BB Code Help'. Below those buttons, there is a section called "Post Optioins" then further down is "Post Icons". There is nothing about Attachments anywhere.
  10. I'm new to this forum, and I'm confused. How do I upload an image? I click on Add Reply and see the 'Insert Image' button, but it asks for a URL. Do I have to upload an image to the web first in order to include it in a reply? I imagine that I'm missing something.
  11. Adam, I killed the update process as you suggested, then I updated using the control center. After a restart, things seem to be working well now. Many thanks.
  12. Newbie here. I installed mplayer through the control center, but it doesn't appear in the applications menu. I went to a terminal and typed in 'mplayer' which got me some help options, but I really don't understand the use of the command line yet. So, is there a way I can put mplayer into the gnome applications menu? Also, is there some place where I can find basic command line help for mplayer? Many thanks.
  13. I am having the same problem with urpmi locking. In fact, I have been unable to update anything since setting up Easy-Urpmi. Either I get a 'urpmi database locked' error (mostly), or I get 'no packages found'. I did as adamw suggested and got the following: [root@localhost Desktop]# ps -e | grep rpm 6251 ? 00:00:04 urpmi.update When I turned my computer on, it automatically checked for updates. I got a red circle with an exclamation point in the system tray, but when I tried to update I got a 'locked' error. After that I got an orange circle with a question mark. Any ideas? (I am very much a newbie.)
  14. I have Ironfighter's original problem, but it came about after adding software and rebooting. I normally run Gnome, but on reboot the panel was gone and I just had the desktop icons. I wanted to try getting a terminal to fix it via the advice in this thread, but I can't seem to get a terminal even! I right click on the desktop and get a menu: "Create Folder, etc.", but no terminal. How does this newbie fix this? (I'm quickly learning KDE.)
