  1. don't worry about getting flamed for asking dumb questions. we don't do that here.

don't know if you found this yet:

open a terminal and do these commands

    su >enter<

    type root password >enter<

    mcc >enter<

that will give you a central place, the mandrake control center, to look at a multitude of things on your system.

as far as firewall systems, I would recommend one:

    such as:

    firestarter http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/

    or

    guarddog http://www.simonzone.com/software/guarddog/

    or

Mandrake has a small lightweight, not easily configured firewall in MCC.

I wouldn't worry about antivirus. no need.

As far as your last question. I have no idea what your talking about. Can you explain it differently?

  2. I think they do thier best to give an incentive to be a paying supporter of thier distro. Its not that they don't appreciate the help everyone that does not pay still offers, its just that they want to keep thier paying members (paying-community) happy. You have to appreciate that a vast majority of the people in the club are actually packaging rpm's, voting on what packages are included in the distro (my favorite member priveledge), or in some other way actively and directly contributing to the release long before non paying members of the community ever get a chance to help them out with it.

  3. anon is right. if you leave your home partition alone, all of your user-specific config files will still be there. you can also use urpmi to do some of the updating. though, coming from 9.0, I would have to suggest waiting a few days or weeks until the 9.2 final iso's start coming out.

  4. glad to have you on board. always nice to see us old schoolers moving to linux. ah...evolution.

you are at the right place for help my man. start some threads and lets get those audio apps workin for ya! that way you can hose that -98 partition and reclaim all that wasted space!!!
