  1. Hi!

I hope someone can help me (again... :) )

    1) How can I "start" a document in Windowmaker? I'd like to have a docked Appicon that starts e.g. the HOWTOs-index.htm using Mozilla. I already have docked Mozilla without a file to open, so now I can't drag'n'drop Mozilla a second time to edit it and insert the index.htm... How do I manage this?

    2) Is there a config file in WindowMaker that stores which Icons stick to which Desktop on the clip and which ones are on the dock? I didn't find anything (I really searched). If I knew the file, I could edit it to get rid of problem (1)...

    Thanks,

  2. Peter:

    MCC --> Hardware --> Auswahl des Anmelde-Dialogs

    (die Ampel!)

No idea why this is in the Hardware settings ...

edit oops, sorry, this is in 9.1. Did not see you got 9.0

(Super Wallpapers machst Du .. hihi... Danke...)

[E] Well, that's my problem :-) I don't have any traffic lights in my MCC... So I'll install 9.1... No, well, as I said, I changed the text file, now it works... But some of those things are quite hard to find out with all those config files and scripts (Yo do wonderful wallpapers btw... hihi... Thanks)

  3. 10h30 pm monday

    Which monday? :P

    By the way ...

Yesterday I bought a cordless keyboard. Most of them (mine, too) don't have ShiftLock/ScrollLock/NumLock - LEDs, because they want to save power. So you get a keyboard driver with them (Windows), which displays Symbols for these LEDs in the System Tray.

    1) The ShiftLock-Symbol changes as if it was on a US Keyboard :-) That's quite confusing, as it always displays things that aren't true at all ...

    2) Is there a tool like that for Linux, too? (KDE, Gnome and WindowMaker are my main interests...) ?

    3) My new keyboard has "Special Multimedia buttons" which are used for Browser functions and similar things under Windows.... How can I configure them under Linux? Can I make them work for special Characters (Slash, Backslash, @, |, or even whole Keyboard macros) under Linux?

    Thanks, bye,

  4. - leave the Gateway empty.

You CAN'T leave the Gateway empty (MDK9.0)! That's one of many of my problems.

    - 192.168.2.1 looks like a local DNS IP, _not_ a ISP DNS server IP

That's the IP of the eth1-Card on my system. Whith this card I connect to a DSL-Modem (Without Router, The Modem doesn't have an IP)

(I'll post more replies soon... No time right now.)

    Thanks,

    PeterPanic

  5. Why did you use Squid? In the Mandrake Control Center (formely known as MCC) you can clic Network&Internet and then Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). This way, all the clients behind your linux machine would have access to the net (port 80) and all the others (port 25 and 110 as well).

It's either I don't understand your setup or you didn't know about the ICS wizard in the MCC.

:? ICS isn't working for me, nor do most of the MCC "Wizards" (MDK9.0, installed with German Packages on a 350MHZ K6-II) ... I'm trying to upgrade to 9.1 in the next few days, but 9.0 Wizards always mess up some of my configuration files and in the end I have to correct everything by hand to get anything working. Those GUI Wizards hardly ask anything or explain anything and so they use incorrect values (Sometimes they place [CR]s or [#]s on wrong positions in the config files. And then they always install RPMs I don't want at all (e.g. shorewall - I don't want that one, because it messes up a lot on my system...) I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but the GUI is just a way to learn how to configure files in a text console (sounds weird....) - When I start something new, like DSL, Firewalls, ICS, Samba, Squid or so, I try the MCC and then learn how to correct everything in the command line... I start to hate that.

  6. Hi!

I hope this question isn't stupid:

Is it reasonable / possible to have the Windows 9x-Clients in my LAN get their own mails on their own?

I've got Samba running for the File Serving, Squid for Getting the Clients online via my Linux-Server (DSL)... Was hard enough to configure this. Now I know I could use PostFix to get the Mails to the Server and then have the Clients get them from the Server... And send Mail the same way.

But: ... Can't I just forward/route through Ports 25 and 110 so that the Windows9x-Clients can just get their Outlook Express Mails on their own (using the internet connection they also use for browsing on port 3128 / 1080 by squid) ?

Formerly I used JanaServer 1 and 2 on Windows Servers ... There was a topic called "Extra Server" which "routed" ports from the clients to the Internet...

    Hmmm... What do you think?

(I'm not THAT good in Linux Networking yet, as the better ones of you might have noticed  )

    Thanks in advance

  7. Hi all!

I have exactly the opposite problem: The ICS obviously keeps me from having a working LAN. My Samba/LAN eth0 (192.168.1.59) only works, when I disable the ICS in the MCC and when my DSL connection is down. Whenever I reboot or restart the DSL (usually after reconfiguring it, otherwise it won't work at all), the LAN Clients (Win9x - Samba) can't reach the server shares any more.

I tried without shorewall (Stop service in MCC - Services)... An other problem: When I use the MCC to setup Network and Internet and activate ADSL and LAN, I'm asked about my DNS and my Gateway IP and device. This PC IS the gateway. I could use the DNS of my ISP on the DSL card (eth1 at 192.168.2.1), But what's the Gateway and the device?

OK, please help me, it's really URGENT. (Company server)

    Thanks,

    PeterPanic

  8. Of course, but where do you put the international characters on your "standard" keyboard? German, French, Scandinavian, Turkish, and of course languages with completely different fonts (Russian, Greek) or even amount of letters (Corean, Tibetan, Chinese,...) ?

I guess we'll continue having different keyboards (OK, yu're right, the /, , |, <, >, [, ] are at hard places on the European keyboards...) - Perhaps a row of special characters above the numbers could help. These should be freely configurable...

Well, as I'm not a designer for keyboards I guess I'll just stop thinking about it... Or perhaps mail to a designer... :-)

    Cya.

    PeterPanic

  9. Hi!

You are right. European keyboards (like my German one) and the European keyboard drivers and keymaps of Windows do things in a different way then US Windows / Linux PCs. I think that's because of the typewriter history, but never mind... Perhaps this can be reconfigured, but as I'm an intermediate newbie, I don't know how, either.

To all Linux developers out there: Europeans are used to a different Keyboard handling... Please install that :)

By the way: You can change your Windows to the way the US keyboards and Linux keyboards work in the Windows Control/Setup Keyboard... At least with the German Windows... So you could get used to the Linux behaviour on both platforms.

    Cya,

    PeterPanic

  10. If you go to MCC>Hardware>Display Manager Chooser you can change it.

:( I don't have a "Display Manager Chooser" in MCC>Hardware.... (Translated from German) I got:

Hardware-List, Monitor, Resolution, Graphical Server Configuration, TV-Cards, Keyboard, Mouse, Printer, Scanner

    That's it.

(I got MDK 9.0, perhaps There is this topic in 9.1 or 8...)

    Thanks anyway.

P.S.: Changing the file worked fine... Thanks

  11. Hi all!

    My problem this time:

When I start WindowMaker in my MDK9.0, there are default menus that aren't correct. All other Window Managers have the correct menus. I tried update-menus, but it didn't change anything. What can I do?

    Thanks,

  12. Hi!

Hmmm.... If 9.0 is supported, I wonder what the problem of my Updater is... I tried several servers and everyone says the same. I don't know the exact message in English as I have the German version. Is there a log where I can find the "real" error message?

Yes, I know that 1.3.17 is development, but

    a) I guess the next stable version will have the same dependencies

    B) 1.3.17 is said to have CMYK support which millions (really) of people are waitiong for to get rid of Corel and Adobe :-) - - - So I wanted to try that.

    c) Gimp isn't making any trouble (yet), because I'm not getting over the ./config phase. It just needs lots of things that I have to install first - - - and those things, which are stable versions, make the trouble...

    d) Even development versions should have a chance to become installed :-)

    Thanks anyway.

    Peter

  13. I'm beginning to despair!

I did what you suggested. The --prefix=/usr worked for some sources, but messed up others. Now I made a link to /usr/local/lib in /usr/lib and the same with the includes. Now more things work.

But now I've been "installing" The Gimp for almost 10 hours without success. That can't be it, can it? Other people will want to install it, too, or am I the only one on earth to install Gimp?

    OK...

So I tried to install the gimp, but it needed pango, atk and gtk.

    gtk needed glib

    pango needed freetype

    freetype needed fontconfig

fontconfig needed libfontconfig1, jade and expat

libfontconfig1 needs fontconfig !!! They need each other! How can I install one of them first?

    libfontconfig-devel needs libfontconfig

    and everything doesn't work with

    ./configure

    make

    make install

I have to work around so many things first, I can't imagine ANYONE can install this without getting a new distro every week. But that isn't Linux/Unix style, that's worse thatn Windows.

Now when I'm trying to compile fontconfig I get hundreds of SGML errors from openjade.

Some things are in fact available as rpm's, but they have dependencies that require me to delete all of my programs first.

The update program of rpmdrake doesn't find any packages, because (perhaps) my distro is too old (MDK 9.0!) and no longer supported......

Sorry, I don't want to sound like it's your fault, I'm just getting mad....

How do other people install standard software?

By the way... Many things I'd like to install need GLIBC_2.3.... I have 2.2 .... I wonder how to update a GLIBC ?!?! I'd really have to remove everything first....

    HELP!

    Peter in Panic

  14. Thanks for your suggestions. I'll try a bit and tell you about successes afterwards.

A similar question: Does anyone of you know about a file based database library? I'm going to write a game which is using lots of data taht has to be sorted and accessed really fast. But I don't want to make the user/player of my game install a db engine, which isn't that "MS" easy for everybody. So my program should work on itself when installed. How would YOU do this?

    Bye.

  15. Hi all!

I've got a newbie problem, as I think this has to happen all of the time and I guess other people solve it every day:

    System: Mandrake 9.0 on AMD K6 - 350

    ---8<------- Skip-this-block-if-you-want-to-get-to-the-real-question-immediately :-) --------8<--------8<-----------

I wanted to install The Gimp (Version of this week, 1.3.17 I think) over my old 1.2.3... OK, Downloaded the sources and did ./configure... this said, I need a new version of pkg-install or so.... Got this new version, did a ./configure and it said I needed a newer version of GLIB... I found out that it's about libglib.so.***.***.*** :-) I mean, there are many libs and links called like this...

OK, then I downloaded the new version of libglib, did a ./configure (get my first point? Why do the programmers always rely on the latest versions of everything? Even on Devel versons which haven't been tested for at least a month???) and everything was OK. Then I thought, "make" can't be wrong, and it worked. So I did "make install", because I thought, I can delete the old Versions afterwards if I have to.

OK, Now ./configure of the pkg-thing worked. (Or perhaps i mixed the pkg- thing up with the libglib thing, but that doesn't matter to my question) So I did make and make install again. As the Gimp-./configure still found the old version of this pkg-*-command I looked it up with whereis and got the two different versions in different directories of my path, then just renamed the old one to pkg-install.old and put a ln -s there to the new version. (Wow! I'm so intelligent! --- I thought)

Ans now the Gimp-./configure worked, but got to a point where it found the old libGLIB ! I looked it up and there's a 1.x-Version, a 2.0-Version (the one I wanted to get rid of) and a 2.2.*-Verison (the one I just installed)...

    ----8<------- End-of-blah-blah-----Begin-of-real-question------8<------

When I try to get rid of the old version via the "Remove Software" of the MCC, it says that I'd have to delete almost every GTK-Application there is! OK, that's the dependency... But I HAVE a 2.x Version of this lib!! OK, I compiled it myself, but how can I tell the urpmi that I still have it when he deletes it?

I heared installing a new Version of glibc is even worse, as EVERYTHING depends on it... How to do this?

Thanks a lot (also for your patience) :-)

    PeterPanic

  16. thanks, but they got 1600 or so programs in their database corner, ... Can you recommend anything? I can't see any way to find out which one fits for me, so I'd have to download 1600 programs and test them :?

I'm used to Ms access, but want to learn C/C++, too, know pascal and Perl and lots of other (long forgotten) languages...

What I'm looking for: A way to write an application that can access and manipulate local database files directly (with its own engine) via SQL or a similar query language. Without a SQL/ODBC/JDBC server running in the background... Just a "simple" file access... I wonder if I should program it myself using CSV or XML, but I think it's quite a lot of work to manage indexes and keys yourself...

    Hmmm.... Any other suggestions, perhaps?

(Am I in the right forum for such a question?)

  17. Thanks for your replies. The Link to SuSE looks like it will help, I'll try as soon as I get to this PC again.

As I'm currently not at this PC I can't find out the MB model. The Brand is "Medion" (Company Tevion) sold by Supermarkets in Germany, but tested by magazines as good quality. I'll look up closer information.

  18. Hi all.... Another question by the newbie nr. one...

A new PC of a friend of mine uses Ctrl+Alt+Backspace as a Power Off key combination! I can't change that from BIOS. Of course I know the Elephant thing and kill from Console 1 ... But I'd like to either

    1) Use Ctrl-Alt-Bsp without turning the PC off or

    2) Reconfiguring the "Kill-X"-Key to - for example - Ctrl+alt+F12 or so...

Any ways to help me? :-)

    Thanks,

    Peter

  19. Me again...

How do I select a different login manager? A friend of mine somehow changed a config file so that I now have GDM instead of KDM which I like more. Thanks to him :-( ... I couldn't figure out which config file of MDK 9.0 I had to change to get back to KDM... The only way I found now was to uninstall the GDM package and start KDM myself...

    H-E-L-P... :-)

Well, OK, it's not that important, but I want to know...

    Thanks,

    Peter

  20. Hi all!

I'm looking for a DB application or programming environment similar to MS Access on windows. Of course it should be open source and free :-) [Kylix by Borland isn't...] - The whole thing should work without first setting up a SQL-Server or simialr, because I want to write simple applications that every user can open/start immediately.

I looked at QT and Glade 2, but they need a server, Kylix costs money and the big Office packages don't come with a DB as MS Office does - not even OpenOffice.

    Can anybody help?

    Thanks.

    Peter

  21. Hi all!

(I'm new here, searched, but didn't find... but I guess this is a repost... Sorry...)

This is a question on rpmdrake/urpmi under MDK 9.0:

I did a dd and mount to get my 3 Installation CDs to images on my hd and mount them. Now I can access the file systems correctly on my local hd without having to insert the CDs.

Problem: How do I make the MCC-Installer forget the CDs and use the HD-Paths instead? The software sources manager doesn't have any manpage/help as far as I see. I'm a half-newbie and don't really know what I'm doing with those "URL's" and "Synthesis or HD-List" files and cz thingies... (shame on me...)

While trying to configure this i deleted one source and tried to restore it to the original settings (which I wrote down) but the GUI tells me it can't update the source and will disable it... Is this a bug?

I hope someone did this before and wants to help me.

    thanks, ciao,

    Peter
