  1. unfortunately MCNL stopped at 2007.1 there are some of us lonely folks still tryihng to figure out 2008/2009 but the scripting changes required are HUGE so I anyway am looking at several different alternatives.

I can tell you that MCNL is awesome and will probably server 99.99% of your needs (I have it installed on over a dozen pc's right now) BUT if you have something that REQUIRES a newer kernel check out http://www.pclinuxos.com/ it is a derivative of MDV, similar to MCNL but I BELIEVE they use a newer kernel.

I do NOT believe they use the MOST recent, and their screens all say 2007, but they do have a version labled 2008 out.

it to is a pretty decent product, I use one of THEIR derivatives as my file/web server.

The one thing I dont like about PCLOS is its use of the synaotic package manager, but thats just a personal preference.

  2. It's half done, but I can't finish it due to a bug in the buildsystem which no-one seems to want to fix :\

OY, ok, I know I've bugged you a lot, if you could just let me know when it happens i'd REALLY appreciate it.

thats the one thing that is keeping my wife off of 100% MDV.

  3. Have you tried simply using drakconnect? It is able to cope with several cellular data devices and providers.

thats what I'm going to try tonite. As I mentioned earlier, I just found out that its being treated as a dialup device.

thanks for pointing me in the right direction though, so how about those synce/wm2003 backports...

    :)

  4. I did search all the search engines for it, and found that a lot of foolkx had gotten it to work w/ UBU, but couldnt find anyone who had tried it with MDV.

Essentially the device is being treated like a deail up modem and not having ever set one of those up, I was hoping that maybe someone here might have tried this ion the past.

I know the 5750 isnt the newest kid on the block, but thats why i was hoping someone had tried this already.

  5. I have suregery next month, and my hospital has "free guest wireless" but has a firewall that blocks almost EVERYTHING. Including radio stations.

My laptop has 2008.1 on it and KDE and thats all working fine (ACER Aspire 5305)

however I would love to get my Verizon PC5750 Cellular Broadband card working.

I bought it to use w/ my work (windows) laptop, but dont want to take that to the hospital woth me.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  6. hey,

lets say someone gives you an install disk. They say its this GREAT linux distro, but thats all they know.

you start the install, and you can tell, by your look and feel that its MDV or one of the derrivatives.

    uname -r shows 2.6.14-13MDV

so now youre pretty sure its mandriva.

how can you tell what "verion" in other words 2007?2007.1? 2009?

in winodws control panel/system/general will tell you what verion including the service paks.

is there such a linux command?

    always curious.

  7. as far as I know you need to load it in windows, let windows load it and use it.

when windows "connects" you should see it "dial a phone number"

    copy that down

then set it up like a ppp account with THAT #

thats how the verizon one works anyway

  8. youknow I'm going to perform a similar experiment, but I've had a lot of folks "go before me" in my situation.

I'm going to install a small c in my car, a REALLY big MP3 player is what it will end up being, but with such "long (relatively speaking) boot times from a HD" hard drives arent real practical.

most folks who boot car pc's use a CF as their OS drive and then a HUGE HD as their data drive.

Mine should be done end of August.

The one thing you want to do, is make sure you get a QUALITY CF card.

A generic might not be your best bet.

PS if that works I may actually use one as the boot drive on a desktop. can you IMAGINE the boot speed on quad core pc with 4GB of ram!!!!

  9. i actually think that xandros is a GREAT transition os for folks weening off of windows

problem is they havent had an upgrade in several YEARS

i actualy paid for a copy and liked it a lot, than MCNL came out and xandros annpunced that they were STOPPING development of their live disk sooo......

  10. actually its ubu specific, because i tried debian, that wouldnt boot either.

    HOWEVER

strangely enough I DID get a FRENCH version of MCNL to work GREAT!

unfortunately i dont speak french, so i have NO idea what version it is.

I LOVE mcnl too, I wish I knew enough to get it intoo english.

the interesting part is that TORONTO just reboots and reboots (as do all other MDV versions)

I never even get to anything, about 1/2 of 1 second AFTER I get the "boot from CD" message, it immediately reboots.

cant get to a cli or anything.

  11. ok, I have a VIA C7 based system, small fanless 1GB, built on everything.

I want to use it as the mother of all MP3 players in my car.

    CURRENTLY I have DSL installed.

Something about the VIA video drivers dont seem to allow any MDV based distro to work. however ANY UBU based distro works fine.

I want a SMALL fast distro that has a nice based MP3 player AND USB auto mount.

The USB is important because I dont think that I'll be able to put enough HD INSIDE the box to hold my MP3's (I have 128GB of speeches I want to carry, not to mention music), so I figure an external USB HD will be my b est route.

unfortunately DSL (the one I have) is running kernel 2.4

I'm nopt really married to ANY distro, I just need a light GUI (for the wife) and a good boot time.

GOS works great, but takes almost 3 minutes to boot

    any suggestions?

  12. I've got 2 of them (I bought them as a matched set), and if you check the netgear forums you will find that its an issue with the device.

I'm just glad i got them on close out.

One of the few times i did my research AFTER a purchase.

but they were worth the $5 i paid, when they work.

the one common factor seems to be that they overheat, well that plus they do NOT well tolerate USB extension cables.

I have a 6" cable I use w/ a 60GB HD, works fine, with the 111's it barely detects the device.

Sometimes they can cool down and work fine for weeks, sometimes it will be weeks before they work again.

hopefully yours are more consistent that mine.

  13. How can I make my own OS as Chris did? Do I just get the base core and start adding the apps I want? If yes, where is the base?

    thanks

is a good place to start

if you just want to get your feet wet with a cool little project check out

    http://www.nimblex.net/

its a really cool "roll your own" distro that allows you to "walk through" a series of web screens and "build your own version. I THINK they use slax as their core.

its a really good place to build a specialized disk.

i built a rescue CD that has saved me several times

BTW the LFS is a LOT of infoprmation, but when you consider what it is that youre doing you will be AMAZED at the amunt of information that they will be giving you for FREE!

  14. I admit I am a data junkie, back in the "net-dos" days I actually had 11 PC's hooked up by rs-232 cables so that I could have as much data and as many hard drives, "online and available" as I could.

Now I'm on Mandriva on 75% of my home PC's.

I have recently started working w/ a "file server" w/ MDV and with 1 dvd and 3 HD's I need some more room.

Lucky me I have 2 more PATA drives laying around.

unfortunately i dont have any more IDE channels on the MB :wall:

BUT! I also have an old (3 years?) Promise IDE ATA100/133 PCI board that would allow me to load 4 more PATA drives in that same box (YUM!)

When I used it in my win2k server it was plug and play.

is there anything I need to know about setting it up in MDV?

Can I just plug it in load MCC and repartition the drives?

would a clean install work better?

I am NOT interested in setting them up in RAID, although the board will support that.

Any comments or crticizms would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  15. actually i think if you were to try one of the amller distros youd be better off. PCLOS or even DSL.

PCSLOS has a "mini me" distro that will run perfectly from your wifes PC.

Better yet would be MCNL. we Give away dozens of pc's to churches and small schools with MCNL loaded on them, and they just rock!

Even the 500MHZ pcs do well.

BUT one thing we DO is make sure that they ALL have at LEAST 512MB of ram.

PCLOS, MCNL is you want MDV, if you just want Linux DSL will run on almost ANYTHING!

  16. Just out of curiosity: is the first harddrive a SATA drive? I remember that some months ago, there was a huge problem reported with almost every linux distro when using PATA and SATA drives. Maybe the problem is located there.

I dont believe thats the issue, my main linux box is an AMD X25600 w/ 4GB ram and 3 SATA and 2 PATA's, and i havent had any issues.

HOWEVER when I did my 1st install, I did UNPLUG every drive EXCEPT the SATA I wanted as a boot drive.

BUT I just did a clean install last night (wanted to get rid of KDE4) and with all drives plugged in, had no issue.
