However I have had MANY systems that wont work with bad ram.

you can run all the sw ram tests you want, but until you run a HW test your just guessing. my advice, return the ram, get the proper speed and all should be good. if the vendor needs a reason for return, let them know that you tried X # of Os's and none of them would load (forget about mentioning windows)

I have seen MANY instances where windows will load and run, for a little while, with bad ram, especially if its the upper registeres of the memory that are bad.

windows wont use it, until you put a HEAVY load on it, then it TOO will go up in smoke.

where as linux does a better job of managing upper registers it wants EVERYTHING to be good, all the way to the TOP!

Hey guys runnin 2007.1 PP+ on an intel duocore 3.4ghz w/ 1.5GB ram.

In an effort to keep things slim, I'm using Opera as my main browser and Konqueror when i have to.

Whenever I get hit with a site (like youtube for example) I get messages saying that flash player is missing would i like to install it.

i do, but still nothing, even OTHER sites , if they use a little flash (my bank site for example) the flash wont work.

I installed it from the CLI, and it claims that its installed, but Opera still says its missing.

now on my 2008RC2 box everything works fine (but that one has firefox)

other than installing Firefox, anyone have any ideas?

No, I mean that your CPU FSB is 1.6G, not 2.0G! The 2.0G is just AMD nomenclature...

At idle mode it goes at 800 Mhz.

Should be clear if you just consult the lappy manual.

 

Your "cat /proc/cpuinfo" was absolutely accurate- what's wrong about that?

the other question is are you running that test on the battery or with the adapter plugged in. MOST laptops now a days run at 1/2 speed (or less) when up plugged (power savings).

the other thing is that the 2GHZ rating by AMD is to give you an "Intel comparable" number, meaning that AMD feels that their CPU is optimized to the point that at 1.6GHZ (for example) it will run at a similar performence of an intel 2GHZ cpu.

I've run nothing but AMD's for the last 20 years (well ok my 1st upgrade was a NEC V20) and typically I have found that in day to day applicaton use they are almost always right.

Update: I managed to get rid of that loud buzzing sound (the volume was turned up loud) :|

Still no sound when i try to play MP3s, or in fact any kind of sound.

ive never used USB speakers, but could it be that linux now sees 2 sound cards?

can you turn off your internal SC in BIOS and leave the speakers connected?

i had a similar issue in a desktop w/ an SBLIVE card. The onboard s/c kept redetecting and conflicting w/ my sblive

I think a lot of what youre looking for is a lot of what I wanted, but then kris explained that in order to 'keep it lean" good for a cheap USB stick or a CD, some things had to be left out or substituted.

Not to mention chris is VERY adament about this NOT being used as a day to day distro, and used as a LIVE distro. I have been playing w/ MCNL for about the last 4 versions and i LOVE it, I eagerly await the 2008 version. For ME this is a GREAT LEARNING tool. I really have learned a LOT.

BUT to get things the way I wanted I did what her website suggests, I rolled my own.

I started w/ a mandriva power pak install to my HD and was very careful about waht i put in, and stripped a GREAT deal out.

When all was said and done my installed setup was about 2.1 GB Fits fine on a DVD and even a LARGE USB key or USB portable HD, butb was still lacking, so I installed enough to MAKE it my desktop, I kept opera, ditched thunderbird, ditched firefox, added the networking, added webmin, cups, nero, gimp, audacity pan and a few other things I use everyday.

Now I seem to be hovering at 3.8GB installed, when I remaster it makes an ISO about 1.4GB, still pretty big all things considered. And although I CAN boot from a DVD an use this as a regular live system, the LAG and overhead (because of what I have added) is huge. I think the only thing on your list I havent looked at is a good AV, and if I continue, that should be my next addition.

BUT then theres 2008...........................

I too think that what chris has done is AMAZING and i praise her efforts, but now I think its up to "us" the ones who want to take it WAY outside its original use, to throw in some of the work!

i don't know if you're printer is supported but it works for my HP photosmart 2575 which is connected on the router.

ok now this is getting frustrating.

my HP LJ 4 claims to be installed properly by CUPS

I used Samsungs unified linux driver to install my wifes Samsung ML 2010.

again CUPS says its installed exactly right.

in both cases, BOTH printers are reported as installed properly, CUPS sees them both.

I send a test opage from CUPS and it claims that both of them were sent just fine

but nothing comes out!!!!!

the REALLY frustrating part is that they are both on the network and they are BOTH installed without ANY Issues from my wifes Linux pc with a similar Distro (hers is mdv free, mine is power pak, both 2007.1

I did install the hp package for my printer, but its so old, i dont tnhink it was require.

The HP is plugged into ye olde HP Jet Direct and prints fine from my XP pc

the samsung, is plugged into a netgear USB print server, but again. my wifes linux pc works fine, and both our xp pc's print!

aany additional ideas, i'd appreciate.

CUPS (Can't Usually Print S#%t) is the needed tool OK, but you will also need hplip installed and running as a backend. And of course they SHOULD be shared on the windows rigs they are hooked at.

ok hplip is NOT installed (that I know of) so i can take care of that when i get home tonight.

but see they are NOT hooked up to windows pc's they are hanging directly off the network with real live HP jet directs.

thats why i cant understand why this is so difficult for me. it should be a snap!

and yet I have THE most difficult time setting up networked printers in my linux boxes.

I'm assuming from my reading that CUPS is what I want right?

both printers are on HP jet directs and a 3rd is on a netgear USB print server

i have tried letting cups scan the network aND it never finds anything

i've tried MANUALLY inserting the ip addresses, no go.

now I know one of my sticking points is that i'm not sure of the "protocol?" IPP, HTTP?

again i'm nototally new, but this has ALWAYS been trial and error for me.

one of the printers is an HP LJ4 which is DEFINATELY old enough to be supported.

the newest one, is a samsung ml 2010, but Samsung even provides a driver for theur printers for Linux.

now I HAVE gotten them printing in the past (MONTHS ago) and I dont even remember the distro I was using (fedora? Suse? MDV? Xandros?)

and they all print from my windows boxes, so i know they work....

any suggestions would be appreciated.

you know I have a fairly full MDV install in my bedroom (Its been running so long i forgot about it) on my tv at 640x480.

now i admit i only use this as a MYTH box, and most of my connections are through VNC, but it seems to work fine.

now this is NOT daily "work" pc as I only really need to interact with it to program and "burn" shows, but it seemed ok there....

I havent used Lotus products in many years, but they are marketing it as an open source Offfice killer!

I downloaded the windows version because i had more room on my xp px than my mdv pc.

it IS a resource hog, they want almost a gig of install space and do recommend a gog of RAM.

I think they may be a little late to the game, unless they can, as they promise, find a email/contact killer to take on outlook.

now personally i havent seen anything in the little tie that i've played with it, that it does better than KOffice/Kontact or OpenOffice/Evolution?

just womdering if anyone who has recent experience w/ lotus products finds this a boon or a bust?

even though it hasnt been "certified" for MDV i may try and throw it on my 2008 box, just to see how she runs.

It's my favorite MDV distro for several reasons:

1) its a VERY fast very trim fully functional KDE based mandriva LIVE cd

2) its an even FASTER hard drive installed version of mandriva

3) (my favorite) if you go to http://www.thehess.org/Rollyourown1.html you can learn how to INSTALL a regular 2007.1 (spring) edition to your HD and then create a live dvd out of it!

but thats MY 3 cts.

a LOT of us are hoping that kris will remaster a 2008 version, but she has done SO much work this year on various 2007 models it wouldnt surprise me for her to take a much deserved break

i was trying to work w/ rar/unrar when i was having my install issues.

i solved those, but never went back to try and use rar/unrar

see I did try and search the forums, bothe here and at MDV.com, and came up with nothing. so then i went to sourceforge, because i knew that the CLI versions STARTED on CP/M / Unix decades ago, but I couldnt get RAR/UNRAR to work for me.

PEA works great though

I JUST installed it on that EXACT same pc, w/o using the TV as the CRT, and it works GREAT

now I will admit, I just spent $10 and added 256MB sick of ram, bringing it to a whopping 384MB, but your HD out does mine by a factor of about 10.

plus you get all the joys of MCC and urmpi

I hate to sound like a newbie and ask a silly question, but my ACER has a REALLY small button on the FRONT edge (that doubles as an LCD).

and if you "accidentally" push it (as I often do, especially loading and unloading it from my case), it turns the card OFF.

sw still detects it, but all installers say that its OFF or not working.

I actually did an entire OS reload the 1st week I had it (their support guy didnt bother to mention it when I called), because I turned the card off.

but if youve loaded the linuxant driver you should email them, ive always had VERY fast support from them.

In moving over to an almost full time linux box, I am finding that one stumbling block seems to be WINRAR.

its an app I've used for years and therefore MANY of my docs, videos and other archived information gets RARED to save space.

However in searching the web the only thing I found was a few (very few) CLI based RAR applications, but even when I TRY and install those, the install fails.

anyone have an idea or recommendation?

BTW in case you hadnt heard of it WINRAR is a compression util similar to ZIP, just uses a different compression scheme (its REALLY great for breaking DVD ISO's down into manageable pieces), and the files end either in RAR or .R01, .R02, .R03 etc

I know its simple, but I installed a SBLIVE in my pc and forgot to disable the internal sound card.

once i did that all was well!

I would go with an MSI from your list. I currently have a Biostar SLI board and getting SLI working is a little quirky. You mus start in CLI. You must clean boot (if you dual boot) and you must make some xorg edits yourself, in my case from the Nvidia sight. Have you considered ASRock? That is Asus' discount line.

you know, I just REALLY dont see much use (for me anyway) in SLI (umm thats the twin vid card system right?) I do some light video editing, nothing major, home movies mostly, but thanks for the warning, thats WAY more trouble than I want to invest

however i did NOT know that asrock was the Epiphone of the Asus line.

I actually went to AMD.com and looked over their recommended MB list and chose from there, thats the only way I have ever had 100% success when dealing with new, to me, technology.

I'm looking at potentially upgrading my linux box to an AMD X2 (from an intel duu core) from 3.4GHZ (2x1.7) to the X2 6GHZ (2x3GHZ)

and am looking for MB recomendations.

some ideas. I have LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of hard drives. I'm JUST now starting to move from PATA 133 to SATA, also I dont really see (for me) much use in dual graphics cards (i dont game), and 2GB of ram is about all I could really afford

personally I have always LOVED Asus with AMD products but at $130 the M2N+ is the most expensive on my list

although it DOES have 2PATA133 ports abd 4SATA ports along with 2 firewire ports

The next 2 I'm looking at are from Biostar.

The Tforce 7025-M2 and the Tforce 570U, both pretty good, one $75 one $90

Lastly there are 2 from MSI

the K9N at $56 only has 1PATA133 and 2SATA's but at THAT price! its a good front runner

and then the KNNGPGM at $75 has about the same specs, just looks like a little more headroom.

maybe you have some ideas that YOU have tried?

those would be appreciated. REalize I'm a CHEAP guy and using built in video hasnt ever really hurt me in the past, and in 20 years of building my own PC's i've only spent over $100 on a MB twice, and the 1st one was in going from an 8088 to an 80286.......

any and all valid opinioons appreciated.

I second the MCNL recommendation.

I've been using it for a class i teach and its GREAT for new folks.

PLUS it has the installed ability to be run from a USB key.

That in itself got one of my students working on a project that would allow his office to use them as very inexpensive thin clients.....

I've tried the NDISWRAPPER and the native bcm and it makes NO difference, oCCASIONALLY when i get a signal it's VERY weak so I still recommend, and still use, and will continue to pay for:

i wish I could tell you WHAT makes the differences, but my experience (with 4 different distros - MDV, FEDORA, SUSE and Xandros) have shown me that its MUCH simpler to use and every single time, my signal is ALWAYS much much stringer.

best $20 ive spent.

nicest part is that since the license is tied to the MAC address of the NIC< I can use it on my laptop with any or as many distros as I want.

It looks like the ZONBU or any of the other C7 series might not be a perfect fit for MCNL.

I asked HIGHKING if he thought FREEVO, in its earlier configuration would run on a C7, and he stated that unaltered MCNL or MDV wouldnt run.

and being the cheap guy that I am, I bought a 800MHZ C3 based system and tried to boot a clean version of Toronto on it.

It loads the initial menu, but no choice thereafter will allow a complete login. they all reboot.

I havent taken the time to look for errors or anything since I know that some of the companies selling the C7 setups will also provide you with a preconfigured ISO for certain lnux distros.

and since this would be a single purpose project (500GB MP3 player anyone?) the actual distro doesnt really matter.

but sigh having a REALLY quiet pc ab was a good idea!

BTW someone asked about the noise factor, the C3 that I'm using (Via Epia) although last years model , is cpu fanless, the case that its in now, has a fan, but with the MB "pizza boxed" on top of it you can REALLY tell the difference on boot up.
