  1. JUST because i was bored! using the instructions at pendrive linux on how to load PDL under windows, i figured maybe you could just change the name of the ISO and sone of a gun, it was THAT simple! now if only 2008 was that simple........................
  2. i had a lot of issues w/ cups too. i installed WEBMIN and it really helped a LOT of things if you get your MCC up go to install software and search for WEBMIN, its a browser based front end for a LOT of the common linux items (file sharing, printing etc) j
  3. NOTHING is too obvious for most. remember this was created for a specific project by some folks who have a really good handle on things. I tried to create some simple step by step stuff about MCNL here: http://www.thehess.org/Rollyourown1.html that may help. The instructions are really about making YOUR mandriva desktop into an MCNL type USB drive (2007.1 only so far), but hopefully it can shed some light on some questions you may have. j

    Won't Boot

i havent read this whole post, but i do know that there are several USB keys out there (ssandisk for example) who have a U3 "security" feature embedded in the track 0 of the directory structure. that has to be complettely destroyed in order for MCNL to work. it's not hard. i just dont remember off the top of my head
  5. yes the entire MCNL project was designed to allow you to boot a slimmed down copy of mandriva from a CD or USB key and never touch the existing hardware. Several folks have used MCNL as our main linux install, and chris the woman who designed it, was always against this j
  6. awsome, i'll look into that tonite. i do have the sane backends. thanks j
  7. finally got a powered USB hub for my linux box last night and tried to hook up this scanner. now i know its not the fanciest thing going, but its always worked in other OS's. unfortunately SANE says no scanner found. any ideas would be appreciated. J

    Won't Boot

a lot of times you will also find that if you mounted ANY other extraneous drives during the process, they will make the loop file too big and then drop you to a limited shell when you get to that point. I had that issue a lot when i would remaster my systems and then find out that I forgot to UN mount everything that isnt needed. try making the USB key again, but before you do, go into the MCC and unmount everything BUT the USB key and the \ partition j
  9. I have to agree with the respondent who mentioned that it sounded like the writer was using mandriva one and not mandriva free. a little explanation, mandriva ONE is designed to be a "live CD" that means that you can take that CD and put it in ANY pc reboot and work from linux without EVER touchin the hard drive or anything else. I have been told that you CAN install mandriva one to a hard drive, but I've never tried it so I cant recommend it. mandriva free however is a FULL install of mandriva and it will make a full and complete installation onto your hard disk in one of several was, starting from a straightforward desktop to a full bore heavy PC. There are a LOT of "live cd" versions of linux. One of the most famous used top be knoppix , which I never liked very much, and there are probably 10 differnt versions of mandriva live cd's and more livecd versions of UBUNUTU than that. My personal suggestion is to download a copy of Mandriva Free, install it to your hard drive, and THEN go to the Master Control Center and have the software updater instal WEBMIN. WEBMIN is an AMAZING graphical front end that will control a LOT of the "server" functions that mst people want to use, wothout having to use a specialized version of an OS like Xandros Server. Typically you will find, that unless you are going to put it into a data room and have 100 people connecting, a regular desktop OS can provide all the "server" you need. You can file serve, you can web serve you can host your own websites internally and your own MAIL if you want to! Most "servers" are desktop PC's without all the "fancy stuff, no 3d desktop and no games. but you can do that yourself. Oh yeah, also, for thr moment, I would stick with the 32bit versions of MDV. There hasnt been 100% complaince with the 64 bit OS, so there may be some things you want that may be missing. I was in a pc shop yesterday buying a new case and a guy with more $ than brains comes in looking for a quad core pc for a new pc he wants to buy. Then he asks if it will run on the $64 motherboard from PC CHIPS that they had on sale! Well not only did he buy the CPU, but the sales guy also talked him into Windows Vista 64 "because then you can access up to 128GB of ram" Now I am ALL about more memory. but i dont know ANYONE who could afford 128GB opf ram and I am QUITE sure the $64 MB wouldnt support that. Just my 3 cts. J
  10. Dude if you can figure THAT out oin 2008 youre a hero. Look at MCNL for some hints. there is a forum here as well as at: http://www.mandrivaclub.nl/site/index.php?showforum=30 I am p[ersonally trying to learn draklive now for 2008, as far as i know, thats the best route
  11. a few things #1 I went through the same thing for a LONG time w/ MCNL as far as removing packages. Once you remove packages you need to clear out ALL your temps and REMASTER. That should take care of a few things, including the fact that youre ICONS are still there and you can still run them. Also it's been my experience that you REALLY need to remove a LOT of stuff and then remaster in order to affect the size of the image. I was using mine as a desktop install and remastering to DVD and saw my image go from 2.1GB to almost 3.9 in a heartbeat, but getting it below 3.1 GB was almost impossible. I believe that both youre problems are related. Are you used to using windows? if so maybe this example will help. We all know that things arent REALLY deleted even though we delete them, until something ELSE is written in THAT physical space. Well a lot of times software installs are similar. In windows you can TRY and uninstall MSWORD, but until you REBHOOT your system, its not going to show ANY differences in your windows setup. now MCNL is a little different OS, since it was designed as a LIVE system, a simple reboot wont help, it will actually undo everything you did. So in MCNL you need to remove your packages, REMASTER your OS, BURN the new ISO and THEN reboot after you do that you SHOULD find your apps have been removed, and IF its a big emough difference your system should no longer have access to them PLUS you size should show some difference. hope that helps. kcore

cool thanks, and that ALMOST makes sense as to why it goes fropm 0 to infinity when you attempt to copy it

    kcore

strange question for the evening. so i'm trying to pick apart M1, MCNL and MPP installed and in putting all my files in one place where i can see them i've come acoss a file from my Mandriva 2008 Power Pack HD installed PC called kcore it resides in /proc and its over 1GB is size. anyone know what it is? and then there is kmsg which is in /dev it shows as a zero length file and yet it grown exponentially (it was 300MB when i stopped the copy) as I try and copy it. any ideas? thanks j
  14. i'll try that when i get home, thanks for the suggetsions
  15. Guys, I updated my main pc from 07 to 08 the other day, so I'm still swimming through soem of the control changes. Certain things arent where they were in 2007. I went from a 21" 80lb CRT to a 3lb 19"lcd this weekend. I have the monitor on a 4 port KVM and everything was going well. My XP pc I needed to change monitor types and recenter the screen. Then I move over to my MDV2008 amd smack dab in the middle of thesct=reen is ax that takes up abot 1/8 of the real estate that says "SYNC SIGNAL OUT OF RANGE" Ok I get that, in win i had to change it from 72hz to 60hz, and i'm sure doing the same thing in MDV will work as well. unfortunately as I navigate throyugh the menus I selieve that what I'm looking for is right behind that little(not) black box. Anyone w/ any ideas I'm listening thanks J
  16. i never had to mount mine manually through the CLI, but i have done t through the MCC i thought you tried that didnt you? j
  17. I bought a MB with an integrated CPU and fan that has a VIAC7 P-4 "alike" cpu The goal was to buid a car computer, bottom line is i need a coupel hundred gigs for mp3s, so it doesnt have to be a HUGELY powerful system. biught a slimline case, bought the cpu, ram and cpu off ebay. UBUNUTU 7 loads and runs fine. The new gOS runs fine. what I want is a stripped down loads from a USB key linux OS that will load and run. everything related to mandriva seems tu be a no go. I have found some instructions for loading some unichrome video drivers in mandriva, but havent tried them yet. I KNOW that MDV 2008 wont run, but i DONT understand why. Does UBU or gOS (an UBU based distro) have something 'special' loaded by feafult? anyone have ANY experience or success getting any MDV based dustro working? PClinuxOS is a MDV based system and it wiont load either. thanks j
  18. WOW that is strange. are they mounted in the control panel? again, my failing memory, but I believe that once you install MCNL to the hard drive you need to mount your drives to the system through the control panel. I always give my slight variations of a normal name. Like my 2 320's are mounted at /mnt/var2 and mnt/var3 that way I dont have to worry about PERMENENTLY integrating them with the system, AND I can UNMOUNT them when i want to run a re master. if you DONT unmount them, your remaster will fail. try mounting them through the MCC and let us know if that works. j
  19. actually add ntfs-3g and ntfs-config both of those j
  20. there are a LOT of folks here who know more than I do, but i believe I had the same issue. It seems to me that when running in LIVECD mode mcnl loads ntfs-config, whereas when you load it to your HD, it doesnt. try loading that through MCC and see if that resolves the issue. J
  21. right, but see I dont have the 08, i have the 07 version
  22. can you tell me what version of the kernal you have? matter of fact if you wanted to print a whole package LIST that would be awesome as well! :P
  23. now i didnt say it was useless, just not what i was looking for. as for the dedication to a single distro each issue, to be honest I havent bought enough copies of that over the years (its quarterly) to notice the pattern. typically i find that the Euro Linux mags are 10times better than the US mags, just for the cover disks if nothing else, and as I sayd if I didnt have a copy of toronto, THIS would be well worth it. I was just looking for more on 2008 and some ino on MCNL maybe in comparison with the redhat "reroller" (I dont know what its actually called in Fedora). j
  24. well sad top say i spent the $16 and as I suspected the most interesting part of the mag, for someone who has worked w/ mcnl for over a year, is the fact that the mag sees to have used MDV's logo all throughout. now thats for ME, for others there are some great how to's, if you interested in gaming or setting up your own mail server. I was REALLY hoping for a DETAILED explanation of the scripts ofr more of a howto for MCNL, heck even a good howto on the MDV thats inckuded. twerent to be. if you need a good copy of toronto or 2008 and your dloads are taking to long it is a great palce to get some....
