  1. Thanks for your suggestions. I do have win32 codecs installed. I have real codecs installed too. I am in the learning stage so if you want to know something please let me know and I can print the output for you to give you a better idea of what I have in my system. Once again, thank you for your time.
  2. I have an update: The error about the video not being played because it did not find a realplay or hxplay is gone now as I re-installed realplayer. I can play real videos now, which I could play even earlier before uninstalling realplayer. I unsitalled realplayer so that mplayer could become my default player for online media. So now, I can play real videos (although I can't expand the screen to full screen), but I can't play windows media video. When I try to play windows media video, the mplayer screen loads in the window of the video and it says it's loading the video but nothing loads. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  3. The problems seems to have been solved. I did some changes in the fstab file and they are as the following: /dev/hda10 / ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/hda7 /boot ext3 noatime 1 2 /dev/hda9 /home ext3 noatime 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0022,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0022,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d ntfs umask=0022,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 /dev/hda6 /mnt/win_e vfat umask=0,users,gid=100,nls=utf8,rw 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda8 swap swap defaults 0 0 Hope this helps someone who has a similar problem.
  4. I have three partitions in Windows and I am able to see those partitions in Mandriva Powerpack 2007 properly. One of the windows partitions is fat32 and I want to be able to access that partition as a user too, not just as root. I can write in the fat32 folder as root, but not as a user. I researched this issue over the internet and changed the /etc/fstab file as the following: /dev/hda10 / ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/hda7 /boot ext3 noatime 1 2 /dev/hda9 /home ext3 noatime 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0022,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0022,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d ntfs umask=0022,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 /dev/hda6 /mnt/win_e vfat umask=0022,users,nls=utf8,rw 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda8 swap swap defaults 0 0 I added "users" in the line for /mnt/win_e, which is my fat32 partition. I read over the internet if I did that, that folder will be modifiable by all users. Apparently, even after doing this, when I check the permissions of "win_e" through "ls -l /mnt/" this is what I get: total 57 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Dec 31 07:42 cdrom/ dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 24576 Jan 16 10:11 win_c/ dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 24576 Jan 13 13:48 win_d/ drwxr-xr-x 36 root root 8192 Dec 31 1969 win_e/ So, basically, it doesn't make the intended change. I also tried adding "uid=500" in the line for /mnt/win_e and typed "mount -a", but the problem persists. How do I solve this? Can I also solve this problem through gui? Thanks. 5. Hi. I have been trying for days now to make mplayer work on my mandriva powerpack 2007, but unfortunately I haven't had success yet. I have tried every possible trick in this forum, other forums, blogs, from tips and tricks section of this forum and from the answers to other people facing the same problem. The result; I am still in the same situation. I am thinking of switching to Linux, but there are many issues like this one which subconsciously don't build any motivation to switch to linux. I have tried commands in the CLI although I am a newbie and I have tried doing other things, from blogs and stuff, but I just haven't been able to make mplayer work. I must be doing something/or have done something very wrong. I know linux offers transparency during installation and is more secure, but well, if people thinking about switching to linux have to be experts, I guess only people who have had some kind of basic training about linux can only use linux. This is coming from a person who has spent days and nights trying to fix problems in linux from forums, blogs, etc.. I haven't given up yet, but might be close to. I know many of you experts would not like my ranting here, but I am very frustrated and I would be glad if I can take it out for a moment, which is what I am doing.smile.gif I am still hoping I will be able to see STREAMING VIDEO IN LINUX. Yes, it is like a dream now.smile.gif I would really appreciate if I can get more help (on one of the posts, where a member was frustrated like I am, I remember one of the admins encouraging him to ask again if he has a problem) regarding this problem. I have not been able to install a library package too which I have mentioned in another thread of mine. Firefox displays big fonts, which is not particularly a very good experience. Sometimes, Firefox and Opera both stop loading pages (I have tried the solutions for them too from forums, but it doesn't get solved permanently). Klaptop puts my laptop in suspension if I am away for a long time, but when I try to wake it up from suspension, it almost always never wakes up, instead all I see is the dark screen, so I always have to shutdown my laptop if I am going away for a long time. The brightness of the screen, although the laptop is plugged in, is much less compared to what one gets in windows. The look and feel is all soft too, not sharp and bright. Please correct me if I am wrong but I think powerpack is supposed to be a commerical version and still it has such problems? So for two weeks or more, I am just trying to solve problems instead of really enjoying all the good things linux has to offer. I can't switch to another version of linux because as far as I know mandriva's recognition of hardware is the best. I remember spending 10 days and nights to make my wireless card work in mandrake 9.2; it worked for half an hour and then it never worked. This can be the case for me if I used another flavor (I wanted to try ubuntu) and that's why I am sticking to mandriva.
  6. I don't know what is happening but I am able to connect from my home too. The only change I did was just click on the interactive firewall in the wireless menu. Thanks.
  7. I tried the above. I have another htread running about mproblems iwth my wireless connection and as I mentioned in that thread I am somehow able to connec t to wireless in my office, but not at home. So, as I am able to connect to wireless in my office I tried opening a video from cbsnews.com and it gave me two different results on two occasions as the following: 1. In the window of the video it said "Mozplugger: Application not found" 2. On another occasion, it played the sound, but no video. In the window of the video, it showed the symbol of mplayer plugin with the text saying mplayer plugin, the video plugin for mozilla. Why would it be so? Am I still missing something? Thanks.
  8. I know this will sound funny but I am in my office and I am able to connect to wireless here. How come I am not able to connect at my home? All the previous messages saying I was not able to connect to the wireless internet were related to my home wireless. I was able to connect properly at home too a few days ago and then I don't know why (if something happened because of modprobe as mentioned in my previous messages) it suddenly stopped connecting to any wireless connections at my home. I will go home and try connecting again and I hope I am able to connect. I am confused what the problem could be. Please stay with me on this. Thanks.
  9. I tried what you suggested and the following is the output: [root@localhost /]# urpmi glibc-2.4-4mdk The package(s) are already installed The following package names were assumed: glibc So, does it mean that package is already installed or it is assuming that at least some version of "glibc" is installed? Thanks for your help.
  10. [i viewed the wpa_supplicant.conf file. I saw the networks I have around my area and the keys for my wireless, etc. I am not sure what exactly you wanted me to see in that file. Also, if possible could you please explain what seems to be the problem? Thanks.
  11. Following are the three outputs you wanted: [root@localhost /]# ls -l /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -rw------- 1 root daemon 29732 Jan 8 13:16 /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf [root@localhost /]# lsmod | grep ipw2200 ipw2200 99696 0 ieee80211 30408 1 ipw2200 Content of /etc/fstab: /dev/hda10 / ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/hda7 /boot ext3 noatime 1 2 /dev/hda9 /home ext3 noatime 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0022,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0022,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d ntfs umask=0022,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 /dev/hda6 /mnt/win_e vfat umask=0022,nls=utf8,rw 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda8 swap swap defaults 0 0 Thanks.
  12. Thanks for your suggestion. I already had gone on that page and installed everything if that's what you wanted me to do. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding your suggestion. To Ian: I will try what you suggested. Unfortunately I faced a grave problem yesterday and if any of you experts can, please take a look at my other thread where I posted my problem connecting the internet: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=38406&hl= Thanks.
  13. I am sorry to post in this message so late, but I observed many people have been reading this thread of mine about installation and although I found the solution I forgot to post in this thread (I posted in another thread). As anyone who will read all the replies in this thread, there were many things and workarounds suggested to me to solve my problem, but nothing worked and guess why! Nothing worked because as silly as it sounds, I didn't check the md5sum of the ISO I had burnt, but when I did, I realized my ISO was corrupted so I fixed it with uTorrent and then burnt the DVD and everything worked. So, if anyone is confused after trying every solutions suggested by the experts here, please know the ISO image that you burnt can very well the culprit. Hope this information helps. Good Luck!
  14. Hi, I am facing a problem which has blocked me from finding solutions to other problems in Mandriva Powerpack 2007 which is runing on my Toshiba Satellite M35-S320 laptop. Until today the wireless internet was working fine and I had configured it by placing the ip2200 firmware in /lib/firmware and then going through the steps from hardware configuration window. Occasionally, the network would show connected but no pages would load, but then I used to disconnect and then reconnect from the wireless manager and after a few minutes(although it's a very long time) it used to get connected again. But today, when I tried connecting like that, it is just not getting connected. I wanted to check what was happening while the wireless was trying to be connected so I typed the command "modprobe eth2", eth2 being my wireless card. I did a mistake by typing that command as I realized later on that it was to add or remove modules from the kernel. Once I realized this, I again typed "modprobe eth2" assuming it might again put back the entry of eth2 in the kernel. I am not even an average level linux user so ended up doing such mistakes. Please note though that I was not being able to connect even before I type modprobe for the first time (only sometimes I also got an error about some zeroconf when it was trying to get the dhcp address). Internet connection in linux is very crucial for me at this stage as I was trying to solve other problems in linux directly from linux. Without the wireless connection I have to log into windows everytime I have to go online, even for posting this post. Please let me know what I did wrong and how I can fix it without re-installing the whole Mandriva (I would go to that length as wireless access is very important to me right now). Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. After posting the above I logged into linux and gathered some information which might help in figuring out the problem. 15. I just know that I can install any .rpm by typing "urpmi *.rpm", but other than that I don't know much about urpmi or installing the software. I know that there is a section called easyurpmi in mandrivausers.org from where I installed all the repositories, main, contrib and plf. That's all I know about easy urpmi too, nothing more than that.
  16. Even after installing this correct rpm from http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i586.rpm.html, when I try to open an online video, Mplayer doesn't kick in automatically and start playing the video. The window of the video once said I needed mplayerplug-in and on other occasion it said it needed mozplugger. I have mozplugger and mplayerplug-in installed already, but still I am getting those errors. Any idea what's going on? Thanks.
  17. I am trying to install Cadence IC-5.0 lnx-86 ( a semi-conductor chip design software) on my laptop which has Mandriva Powerpack 2007 running on it. I have had this same version of Cadence working on Mandrake 9.2, but I had other issues with Madrake 9.2 so I decided to switch to a newer version, Mandriva Powerpack 2007. I assumed if Cadence worked on Mandrake 9.2, it should work on Mandriva Powerpack too, but apparently that doesn't seem true. I start the installation by running "./SETUP.SH" but as you will see in the following code that I am pasting here it fails to run "softload" (the program it is supposed to load after SETUP) after ./SETUP.SH. Specify path of install directory \c [OR type [RETURN] to exit]: \c /cadence Directory /cadence does not exist. Create? Could someone please guide me as to what I can do to install Cadence IC-5.0 on Mandriva Powerpack 2007 or do I have to again go back to Mandrake 9.2? Are there any libraries or some packages I can install so that Cadence can be installed? Just out of curiosity, can Cadence work on Windows XP pro SP2? Thanks. I have tried the following (as collected from the internet) too but to no avail: I am posting the results of export LD_ASSUME-KERNEL=2.4.1: root@localhost install]# export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 [root@localhost install]# cd bin.lnx86/ [root@localhost bin.lnx86]# ls ls: error while loading shared libraries: librt.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory [root@localhost bin.lnx86]# ./softload /bin/sh: error while loading shared libraries: libdl.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory [root@localhost bin.lnx86]# ldd /bin/bash /bin/sh: error while loading shared libraries: libdl.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory [root@localhost bin.lnx86]# exit The final thing I tried just now was the following and it also resulted in an error: [root@localhost Download]# rpm -i glibc-2.3.2-14mdk.i586.rpm error: Failed dependencies: glibc < 6:2.3.3-2mdk conflicts with sash-3.7-5mdk.i586
  18. Thanks. I tried what you suggested and the problem seems to have been solved.
  19. Changing the entries in fstab did work.:) Thanks.
  20. Thanks for your help. I did find the .kde directory under the directory "username". I haven't done anything to put the octet-stream file in this direcoty, so is it completely safe to remove it?
  21. Hi, I am facing a peculiar problem. Whenever I log into Linux (Mandriva Powerpack 2007), I keep getting an error message saying "Could not find mime type application octet-stream". I don't know why it is happening now becuase I know I changed the file association of a media file and for torrents but nothing for "octet-stream". I get the error whenever I try to open Konqueror too. Any fix for this? The other problem is that I have installed Azureus but it doesn't download anything. I try to test the port forwarding and I always get the NAT error but I can't do anything about it as I get wireless access through a service provider for my apartment complex. Is there any way I can fix this problem? Thanks.
  22. I will try out changing the line in fstab. I actually tried changing it from ntfs to vfat (not rw from ro though), but then I got a little afraid and didn't save the changes. I will now. ffi - I am a novice and I would look into the driver you are talking about and what it does. Thanks all of you guys.
  23. I am running windows xo pro sp2 and mandriva powerpack 2007. I wanted to read/write on e:\ so I converted my e:\ drive from ntfs to fat32. The problem now is that I can see the partition but I can't see the contents of the partition. I can see /mnt/win_e but when I browse inside it, there's nothing. I opened up the fstab file and found that the entry for /mnt/win_e still has ntfs association instead of vfat. The entry for win_e in my fstab is as follows: /dev/hda10 / ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/hda7 /boot ext3 noatime 1 2 /dev/hda9 /home ext3 noatime 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0022,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0022,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d ntfs umask=0022,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 /dev/hda6 /mnt/win_e ntfs umask=0022,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda8 swap swap defaults 0 0 So how do I fix this problem so that I can see the contents of win_e and also be able to save files in it from linux? Thanks.
