  1. I recently tried to add a new hard drive to a friend's system. I know the drive is connected properly. Harddrake correctly identifies the drive as "hdd", but I can't do anything with the drive because there's no entry for /dev/hdd. How do I fix this?
  2. With every release of KMail over the past year and a half, I've tried connecting to a UW-IMAP server. If I set KMail to view all folders, then it recursively places every file from my home directory in the IMAP folder list. If I set KMail to view subscribed folders only, then it won't show my inbox. I've been able to "trick" KMail by creating a folder called "inbox" then manually deleting it and replacing it with a symlink to my inbox, but I'd rather not do that for every user. Evolution, Mozilla and SquirrelMail work properly, but I was hoping to use a client that integrates with KDE. Anyone know how to fix this?
  3. Minor typo correction: "x" extracts files from an archive. That should be "z or j".
  4. Sounds like you didn't make the "startxfce4" file executable. "chmod 755 /usr/bin/startxfce4" should fix it.
  5. There's an application called "Menudrake" in Mandrake's configuration/other menu. It's very easy to use, and will allow you to add the icon. You should be able to add it to the panel after that.
  6. I think you guys are still missing the point of the Mandrake installer :) Once you add contrib, PLF and Texstar to your sources, you can install KDE 3.1.3, MPlayer, Mplayer codecs, KMplayer, etc... from fhe Mandrake installer. You don't have to worry about dependencies. The installer will find the files it needs and download them. If you would rather not use a GUI, just type "urpmi <package name>".
  7. The Mandrake updater is only for security updates and critical bugfixes. You need to run the software installer.
  8. If you just want to play Quicktime files, then MPlayer is your best bet. I've never tried encoding Quicktime files, so I can't help you there.

    Broken KDM

Here's a copy of the /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc file. You'll need to change the "sessiontypes" line to include the window managers that you have installed. 10. KMplayer is just a KDE frontend to MPlayer. It doesn't affect codecs or MPlayer. However, Installing codecs is very easy if you have PLF added to your sources. You could then use the Mandrake installer to search for "codecs", check the box beside the MPlayer codecs package and click "install." You will then have almost all of the major codecs including DivX, XviD, WMV, MPEG 1 and 2, and Sorenson. Realmedia is just about the only thing not included.
  11. To answer your questions, the quality I get is similar to that on Windows. The error message you got means that kmplayer needs KDE 3.1.2. Mandrake 9.1 comes with KDE 3.1.0. If you have a lot of bandwidth and you setup the source for Texstar, the Mandrake installer can update to KDE 3.1.2. The only problem is that the dynamic desktop icons don't work properly with supermounted devices like CD-ROMs and Zip drives. Not a big deal, though. You can make your own static icons.
  12. My mistake. I got kmplayer from Texstar, not PLF. Here's the link. http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distribut...c-2tex.i586.rpm If you haven't done so already, you should setup software sources for contrib, PLF and Texstar. It will make your life much easier for installing software. You can find instructions for that at http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php#third
  13. I think mtweidmann meant that you might have to downgrade the browser plugin, not mplayer itself. My suggestion is to install kmplayer from plf. It embeds itself inside Konqueror and has stop/play/pause/search buttons in the embedded player. I tested with the Apple link and I can view the trailers.

    Broken KDM

OK, I fixed the problem. Something in my kdmrc file was fux0r3d; I'm not sure what. I copied the kdmrc file from another machine saving only the old "SessionTypes" line, and now everything works just fine. Sorry about posting unnecessarily. At least this might help someone in the future.

    Broken KDM

I rebooted last night only to find that KDM was broken. KDM starts as it normally does, and everything looks fine. However, when I log in, I get a bash prompt within KDM instead of it loading a window manager. None of the window managers will load; they all bring me to a bash prompt. Mdkkdm does the same thing. I switched to GDM, which works perfectly, but I'd rather use KDM. Since GDM works, I know that everying in /etc/X11/wmsession.d/ is fine. I suspect that there's a problem in my kdmrc, but everything looks ok. Any ideas? I'll post my kdmrc if anyone thinks it will help. I'm running Mdk 9.1 with kernel-2.4.21.0.25mdk, Mdk 9.1's Gnome 2.2, Texstar's KDE 3.1.2.
  16. Just to be clear. By "last Sunday" they mean July 20. The kernel released last Sunday (July 27), 2.4.21.0.25mdk, has been fixed. Go ahead and download the 25mdk kernel.
  17. Come on. The owner of this thread invited people to probe the Hotmail server to see that Hotmail is hosted on BSD. Hotmail is not hosted on BSD, and quoting a million articles from 1999 isn't going to change that. Don't get me wrong, I use Linux exclusively. FUD, even against Microsoft, is still FUD. What would you say if MS claimed that Windows Server 2003 is better than Linux because of bugs in Redhat 5.0?
  18. Yes, when Microsoft purchased HoTMaiL (running on BSD/Apache 1.2.1) in 1998, it unsuccessfully tried to port the application from BSD to Windows NT 4 Server/IIS 4 (If I remember correctly, NT 4 shipped with IIS 3 in the first quarter of 1998). Starting September of 2000, Hotmail was hosted on Windows 2000 Server/IIS 5 instead of BSD/Apache 1.3.6. Note that in those two years, MS only needed one Apache upgrade ;)
  19. What makes Linux stand out above other systems is the community. We don't need to resort to FUD to let people know that Linux is better than Windows. Please check your facts before claiming that Hotmail runs FreeBSD. [blah@myprompt ugh]$ telnet lw10fd.law10.hotmail.msn.com 80 Trying 64.4.14.250... Connected to www.law10.hotmail.com (64.4.14.250). Freetype2

You rock. I have nice fonts again. Thanks so much.
  21. Mandrake doesn't call it "htdocs" The default document root for Apache on Mandrake is /var/www/html/

    Freetype2

I recently installed Texstar's freetype2 packages, and now some of my fonts aren't rendering properly. Is there a way that I can revert back to the stock Mandrake 9.1 packages? If not, will compiling and installing the latest release from freetype.org break my system?

    Gaim & Sound

Not sure if this was also a typo or not... are you using "%s"? I'm using "aplay -q %s", and GAIM sounds are fine.
  24. I had a similar problem once because I installed the php-ini package after installing php extensions like the php-mysql package. I uninstalled the php-extensions and php-ini package, then reinstalled php-ini before reinstalling the php-mysql and other php-related packages. Everything seemed to work from that point on.
