fatk your post just scared the hell out of me I don't use Window$ anymore except for NHL2004. Sorry love hockey :woops: I must admit in my youthful past that I may have "misplaced" my product license :deal: But as I got older I wanted to make sure I had them for all my software. Mainly for the upgrade and support stuff. TO be honest I have never registered any software I have bought. I just don't like given my personal info out. I have had some companies require me to give my personal info to get over the phone support. Id say no way Ill buy a different product. Scared to find out M$ may have not cared and "identified" my even though I said not to. Back in the day when you got windows95 on floppy disks (yea I was one of them) anti piracy was not so good. All the companies are getting better now. With M$ "product activation" leading the pack.

Have to stir it up again but, I was just reading some sites about viruses. They had mentioned that we may see more Linux viri soon do it its greater use. I tend to disagree. My main thought was when Im on my computer Im not the su or root. Don't think to much damage to my system should take place as a normal user. Maybe my /home will get messed but who cares? But Lindows ran as a newbie and as root may be an exploit that social engineers could take advantage off. Man that could be some real bad FUD for Linux then

That s odd. My Mozilla-Firebird(.7) worked ok there. Most of my plugins worked. I have: Flash Mplayer-plugin Realplayer adobe .pdf plugin mozplugger Just for sake of argument did they work with plain old Mozilla?

True but my thought was that in most cases like this forum you don't learn anything until someone has a problem. I guess you can goto other sites Like These but Im looking for a book to read away from my computer My wife seems to think being on my computer all the time is not good for the family - go figure. Well my familiy knows I love Linux. Thankfully they understand not to go out and buy a Linux book for me. So they gave me a gift card to Waldenbooks. So here is the question. What is a good Linux book. Don't want a Newbie book, but Im no advanced Linux user either. I use Mandrake 9.2 as a day-to-day computer now and I think I have a good feel for it. Im looking for a book to help a "day-to-day" user get deeper into what makes it tick and how to get more / do more.. I saw a possible book Here. it has some good reviews What do you think?

For a stock Distro I like 9.2. To be honest I thought that 9.1 with Texstar .rpms was the best. I miss Texstar's work with mandrake. PcLinuxOS is great but I stick with Mandy :D

Thanks alot. Based off some new info the computer will actually be a laptop. He wants a mobile mp3 / multimedia station.It will be around 333mhz with about 48mb ram. At little leass than 1 gig of hard drive to work with. Would a current Mandrake work? (without KDE or GNOME)

Got a Window$ only buddy that came to me asking if a Linux Distro could be a MP3 player for his house. Basically line out to amplifier then to speakers. He wanted to try out Linux because he thought it could be scaled down to save hard drive space for MP3's. So far the only computer spec's I have is that it will be a P2 computer. Im quessing 200-400mhz. Don't know how much ram yet. I don't think it would be networked. Could advise of an older Distro. Also thought of something like Slackware. No KDE or GNOME because it would require to much ram. What is the next GUI to use? I also thought that if he is trying to maximized hard drive space what about a Cdrom Distro?: Slackware Live - PcLinuxOS - Knoppix. How slow of a computer has anyone gotten these to work on? Also does any of these come with a good MP3 Player? Also for the sake of thought do any of these come with a VNC server? If he networks it he could control the MP3 player from anywhere are the house.

Remember like a said at the top. Alot of use (including me) set no root password in MDK. this is not as bad as being root at login but still very insecure. As for Lindows, I now think that it would be a great Distro for one mom or grandparents who want to get away from Window$. Never really thought to compare the price of Lindows to Mandrake in total. Take Mandrake silver club membership with 2 Distro charges each year and compare to Lindows with the download package. Granted MDK is free to download. You can also get just about all progs via urpmi. What I've learned about Linux to me is - giving back -. For me is paying for a distro here and there(Im due at MDK10). Maybe a membership in the club or some web space (bandwith). I would love to get my wife on Linux (Lindows). She works from the house. Problem is her computer hardware only has windows98 drivers. and they(Stedmans) don't make a medical spell checker for Linux yet. If they did, I think I would get Lindows for her. Complete easy of use with little changes out of the box. Plus the look and feel is alot like Window$.

Ive been using MDK on and off since 6.0. and did the daily use migration around 9.0. I have read some harsh comments toward LindowsOS and Michael Robertson. I’m just wondering what Im missing. :unsure: 1. Ok we have a Linux distro that’s runs as root (not good). But come to think of it I don’t use a root pwd with my MDK. not as bad as being root but still bad. My thought is its my home computer with no direct internet connection (firewall/router - see coyote linux). 2. He charges for his distro (alot do) 3. He charges for updates / apps (there is a free resource too) My thought - so what A windows user is used to paying out for just about everything. From some reviews Ive tread Lindows does a very good job with documentation. And they are very good for the Linux newbie. My first Linux distro was RedHat 5.1 (Manhattan). I spent a very long time learning the system. What did I do after I was a little comfortable? I tried Slackware. Now thru the years I have tried many distros. Heck I have a 800mhz AMD machine that I change Distros each month on. I would think that if someone changed from M$ Winblows to Lindows it would be good. Why? Because there is a good chance they would try other distro's when get the feel of Linux. Maybe RedHat or Slackware or Mandy who cares it will be another Linux user. What’s kind of funny is what seems to be a personal battle he has with M$. Would it not benefit Linux in the long run? I mean in the news is better then no news right? As for those who say Linux is not ready for the home desktop, I beg to differ. Who here remembers RedHat back in the 5.0 time frame? Id say we have come a long way. I would even say a windows only user would only need about 2-3 weeks to get a good working feel of KDE. Now dont take be as a pro Lindows user, but I have not read that much to put me against it. I have gone the the PLF site and tried about 8 different "contrib" sites. after I install Ill goto install any program. I get a message: medium "contrib" uses an invalid list file: mirror is probably not up-to-date, trying to use alternate method any ideas?

I havent had a chance yet. I may this weekend. Ill advise what happens. Ill look for the chipset. Its a HP ze5185 Laptop.

Found it Error scenario: When enabling ACPI in the kernel (by removing acpi=ht from the kernel boot options), the system freezes very early Why: There seems to be a bad interaction with Local APIC, which is enabled by default in the kernel. This can be seen by adding vga=0 to try to see the last kernel message before it locks solid (a message like "Looking for DSDT in initrd... not found"). This seems to happen with certain HP laptops. Other reports also indicate that if you remove AC power from a laptop (ie. Dell latitude C640; possibly others) it will freeze requiring a power off. (re: Bugzilla #5821) Solution: Add "nolapic" to the kernel boot options to resolve both issues. http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3#nolapic

OK I could get acpi working in 9.1 real easy. MDK9.2 its a no go. on boot: Looking for DSDT in initrid ... not found! ACPI breakpoint: Executed AML Breakpoint opcode What does that mean? I have tried other kernels with no luck. Any idea? In my lilo.conf it states acpi=ht (I think it was ht not home right now) what does ht mean? when I change it to acpi=on I get the above error. I do believe that when I first did a mdk upgrade (9.1 to 9.2) acpi worked if I used the 9.1 kernel. But do to many upgrade issues I had to do a clena install.
