  1. Wow...!

I didnt thought i would get that many answers, thanks everyone...

The laptop doesnt have a cdrom, though i could get one if i really need it, i think i could connect an external 2x drive to the parallel port if my friend lends me his drive.

The Laptop is currently running DOS 6.1 and Win 3.11 pretty good, it even runs Word 6 without problems, its a bit slow though ;) and the screen is black and white, but works.

At the moment the laptop is not being used for any usefull porpuose, but i need it at least to make text editing (something like word 6).

Also about the X, i was thinking in trying DirectFB, but it just crossed my mind, and i havent checked compatibility or anything ... so for now, X is out of question.

    Thanks again!

  2. :oops::jester:

It seems im not that good at expresing my self....

Here is the thing, the PC had two hard disks with vfat format (fat32) which were loaded with stuff (my father´s stuff) and i connected my HD wich had 3 partitions of which 2 are ext2 and one is fat32.

Im naming the disks as follows:

Disk one: 6gb (one fat32 partition)

Disk two: 3.2gb (one fat32 part.)

    Disk three: mine

It seems that the "disk two" has a problem (since we got it) with its MBR or partition table, and you cant boot any operating system from it.

What i did was installing Damn Small Linux to one of the ext2 partititons in MY disk. When i runned the lilo install, and it tryed to write the partition table of the disks, seemed to crash, actually, it did crash. So i rebooted, and everything worked just fine (i just watched win98 boot), then i turned the PC off and went to eat something, when my father turned it on, he noticed that one of his drives was missing (disk two), so i got a bit nervous and started looking a solution and also a cause, i found out that fdisk and cfdisk detected the disk, but they didnt knew the format and reported some kind of error with the partition table and asked me to overwrite it or something like that, i didnt wanted to run the "mdk recover windows boot" from the cd as i didnt knew if that would cause any data loss... neither i run the fdisk /mbr for the same reason.

I hope i made it a bit clear... if still isnt clear, please ask.

  3. HI,

i know i didnt gave much detail as i didnt know what to write and hoped someone like you would ask some specific stuff just like that... :)

I didnt runed "fdisk /mbr" because i wasnt sure if it would make me lose any data, and also as the problem is with the master slave disk and not the primary with the OS.

Do you think it will solve the problem on a secondary disk?

About the space for the install, my HD is partitioned in 3 right now, one for backup of important data, another for some windows games and the third was a blank ext2 partition. So the script asked for the device (wich i answered /dev/hdd5) and if i was sure i wanted to format it.

Do you need any more information?

  4. Im :wall: (read, hiting my head against a wall)

    Here is the background info:

Im at my parent´s house for the hollidays, and my father has a celeron 333 with win98 and a couple of HDs, so i took off the cd-rom and connected my HD (there is also a cd-rw)

Then i downloaded Damn Small Linux (as i have dial up here too) and used it for a couple of days from the CD, but i wanted to have a working Linux from the HD, and as mine had some free space i made the parititon and proceded to install it following the instructions.

After running the first script (the one that does the install) i runned the second, the one that installs LILO, the script crashed at some stage, cant tell which one.

Then i shutted down the PC and went to eat dinner, when my father turned it on, booted on windows, he couldnt find the D disc (or hdc in Linux), then i went crazy thinking what could i´ve done...

It seems that disk has a problem in its partition table or boot table or whatever, and cant boot (this is a fact and has nothing to do with what i did), then when i runned the LILO install something was written (dont know what or how) and now the disk is not being recognized as a working or formated one.

When i run cfdisk or fdisk i get the error about the partition table not being there or something like that and if i want to start from zero.

I dont know what to do, i want to recover the data on the disk and dont know if overwriting the partition table will erase it....

    any tips on this??

  5. I dont think it has something to do with that, its more a Imlib libraries problem i think, i got to thinking this when i saw i had

    ...

    none                /proc  proc      defaults            0      0

    none                /dev/shm  tmpfs  defaults            0      0

    tmpfs                  /tmp      tmpfs  size=2G,nr_inodes=10k  0      0

    none                /dev/pts  devpts    defaults            0 0

    ....

it in my /etc/fstab and its also loaded when i do a "df -h"....

But i did found something else, i got to know that the setting are stored in ~/.imrc and /usr/etc/imrc, so i edited all the files i found with locate imrc (as root) and it keeps happening though i have this:

    ....

    Dither yes

    Remap fast

    HighQuality on

    Mit-Shm on

    SharedPixmaps off

    ...

So i dont know what might be... i think its loading it from somewhere else or

its overwriting (although i checked the file when i restarted and everything is as i left it)....

by the way, i tryed turning on Shared Pixmaps just in case, and it didnt work either, also if i run imlib_config (the 2nd screenshot) the "MIT-SHM Shared..." continues disabled, and the Shared Pixmap too... wierd....its like its saving it somewhere else... how can i check where is saving things or something??

  6. Im having this problem with Enlightenment 0.16.6 and in Arch Linux not MDK, though noone had this there so im asking here, and as is a E16 issue not a distro issue im doing it in the soft forum, hope its ok.

As soon as i start x i get this message from Enlightenment:

    error-e16-imlib.jpg

So i looked around and found that i can enable the option with imlib_config, here is the shot:

    imlib_config.jpg

As you can see there is the option MIT-SHM Shared Memory Enabled so i tick it, and then save the things (did it as root and i get an extra button to save as "Save System Config" next to the "Save User Config" -- saved both)

But when i restart Enlightenment the warning shows again and if i run imlib_config i see it de-activated again (the MIT thing), even without restarting and as soon as i checked the box and closed "imlib_config".

Any one has a clue on how to make the save setting work?

Im was thinking it might be some kind of write perms issue, but doing it as root should have solved that...

  7. Other=

Now im using Enlightenment 0.16.6 a while back used XFce4 for about 2 months and a while back used Fluxbox for about 2 month too, before those i used KDE, wich i didnt like coz it was way to heavy and way to similar to windows, but i was too much of a newbee to be jumping from a desktop to another...

Anyway, i started trying E16 a couple of days ago so i cant say much, except is the best WM i have tryed yet... and i will try E17 this hollidays...

    Gracias!!"

    Im soooo sorry!!

I was in exams at the university...

Here is the post just in case something wasnt clear:

I have an A-Open AK-77 8XN with a KT400 chipset, since i installed MDK 9.2 ( and now cooker) when i turn the PC on, it goes to stand by (or energy saving mode) at anytime during normal use, even when im typing, playing or whatever, and i need to press a key to get it to the "normal state", this usually lasts 30 minutes (it happens several times in that period --3/5) and then stops doing it until i reset the PC, any ideas on why is this ??

Well, im sorry, but i said i did better the other way :)

  9. Ok, when i had the problem was using full RAM memory, wich is not normal, nor optimal, neither in Linux or Windows, thats something out of question, while the SWAP was around 14mb.

Now, before i had these issues, i had around 100mb of RAM used, and never, and i mean _never_ used the swap, why? mostly becouse i dont run any huge app that will full the memory, neither i do now.

I've been doing some stuff, switched to Firebird and reinstalled some pkgs, now im starting X with 140mb full, which i can accept but i will keep trying to reduce it. Now my memory is at 224mb and the swap hasnt been touched.

I will keep checking whats going on...

  10. Ok, lets "place" some background info:

    My system:

    Mother: Asus CUV4X

    Proc: P3 550@733

Mem: 256mb Dimm PC100 IBM ECC

    Video: Leadtek Winfast GeForce2MX

    Sound: onboard (ac97)

Desk: wood table... ehhmm but i dont think this has something to do with the prob.... :jester:

    Something i might-should-have-sayd-before:

    OS: Arch Linux

    Couldnt burn 9.2 yet...

    I didnt had this issues with memory, i used this same setup;

    Xfce4 Desktop

    Some Gdesklets

    Mozilla

    LICQ

    aMSN

I updated some pkgs, including those named above... i really cant recall every pkg, coz its damn to easy to update them...

    Anyway...

The problem is from the start, i dont have to be 6 hours using the PC (uptime) as soon as i startx, i see that freakin memory bar full...

Also, i reinstalled X, Mozilla, gdesklets, Gaim lots of time (doesnt work)....

The only thing im missing to reinstall is the desktop i think, i will try that... and see what happens...

by the way, you can see my memory problem in the pic, for some reason, something is eating all my RAM and i dont have a clue about what is it.

    sud_crow, could it be X

    ps aux | grep "[X] "

(note the space between ] and "

    or

    ps auxO-s

and see if you can tell what's eating the mem.

sud crow: go to a command line and run 'top' then see what is eating it.

    Ok, here is the code:

      .......

The rest are all system, or 0 consuming.

So, whats going on?? Im having these issues for some time now, i really cant tell what is it, i've reinstalled most of the updated things when this came up (i cant remember wich where now coz all the stuff i been doing to solve it).

I reinstalled mozilla, gaim, gdesklets, and most of the dependencies.

If i go with a gnome-system-monitor, i get that X is eating 283mb (!) of memory, but i know this isnt the real amount, anyway, is waaaay up.

The second to follow is Firebird, but it just eats 38mb, and when in use, i get that memory load almost all the time, no matter what im doing, and at X startup i get around 200mb full...

Bvc, if you think this should be a new thread, please move it... as long as you :help: me.

  12. You dont say what are you using to dial but i guess you are using Kppp, and KDE.

I could help if you were using "wvidial", but, i dont remember how Kppp works.

Anyway, it would be good if you specify a little more on what are you using and if you have a proxy, gateway, or any other "special" thing...

  13. I use LICQ (www.licq.org), its just an ICQ messager, could pass as a clone i guess.

From time to time, when chicks require it, i use aMSN, but not very frecuently...

Anyway, i would use Gaim, as i did since the beggining but for some reason stoped working and i cant find whats the problem... it just freezes since version .71 to .73 (actual) havent tryed an older coz they dont support msn, so there is no use in having a multi protocol client when i cant use mp.

  14. Yes it is!

Forgot to mention, im on dial up and started the download about 2 hours ago, i think i will have it by tomorrow (i have to hung in a couple of hours and resume later) night.

Also i think i will have it running in a couple of weeks, with a bit of good luck, i have to study for some coming exams... ( :help: )

Anyway, as soon as i get it running (a friend will be doing it also) i will post a review, i always wanted to do a Linux Distro review... :afro:

  15. I found this dont remember where, is a way of protest to request (we already asked several times by the good way  ) Valve to release Client versions of their software (games) for Linux, not only for servers, we are not their slots... :evilmod:

Here is the original post at Linuxquestions.org:

If you run a Linux server for any game, click here!  ( post #1)

I have seen all the awesome games for Windows, like Half-life and Warcraft III, and, now a Linux user, I don't have those incredible time-killers anymore. Now, on seeing so many awesome games for Windows, I'm thinking that it's definetly not fair that the Windows users get the goods and all we Linux guys get is the dedicated servers. So I have decided on a solution: boycott.

The companys don't give us Linux clients, they don't get our precious bandwidth that we've given to them for the servers of those games. It's that simple.

So, if you run a Linux game server, I implore you, post on this forum and let the gaming industry know: they can't leave us out.
