  1. Fresh install of Slack 10 and this is the 3rd time its happen with 10. Not sure what I am doing wrong, but its getting very discouraging and I don't know what to do to fix it. Here is the error I am getting. "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal" I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've tried other terms and even downloading Eterm and it still will not work. :( Any ideas? Thanks FX
  2. Well even though I whined about Fedora screwing up my dual boot I fixed that by running it alone on here. This is me laptop that I use, and it works pretty good with Linux. The wireless you can get up and going with madwifi or linuxant drivers. http://hardwarecentral.dealtime.com/xPF-To...ellite_Notebook FX
  3. Totally removed XP and loaded Linux all to itself on here. ( My laptop ). I still have a dual boot going on my gaming machine and on the wifes pc. Kind of curious I can hold out with only linux on here. Anyone guess the distro I choosed? Those of you in #musb that know, cannot say anything. FX
  4. Too bad Fedora can't be like nvidia and fix or patch their product when they know they need too. FX :still mad:
  5. I had it installed last night for a bit. Couple of things didn't work, for me anways. One: I could not "su" to root or do any "gui" system changes like add a user because it said that the roots password was wrong. Now if I logged out and then logged in as root at the gdm, it would be fine and I could do things as root. The password was accepted. Not sure what I did wrong there. Two: I couldn't get to the net. I set it up like I usually would, or at least I thought I had everything the right way, but still couldn't get to the net. Again using the "networking gui" to setup it up was impossible unless I logged out and then logged in as root. I had it installed on the wifes machine, but removed it and installed Mandrake. ( I need to learn Mandrake better anyways ) I am thinking of installing on my gaming machine and playing around with it there. See what I did wrong during the install maybe too. From what I seen and had running it seems like a nice distro. I know alot of people trying making a Debian system out of Knoppix and most it the times it fails bad, or at least thats what I read. Hopefully this "cheaters, quickie" version of Gentoo works better. FX
  6. Im downloading now. Still not going to give up Slack though. FX

    winmx on linux?

dcgui works real well. http://dcgui.berlios.de/index.php FX
  8. cybr I ran that command on the wifes machine and it didn't fix anything. On here, the laptop, I could still boot into Windows with no problem, but when I ran PM8 or tried too, it would error out with a 117 code. "Drive letters are unreconizable" or something close to that. I also installed with the "linux hda=blah" command so it would use the right geometry and things still got hosed up. Its depressing for me cause I am really a RH/Fedora fan you anyone in #musb will tell ya that, but geez this last release is just, well not good. Sorry, but it should have never been released under those circumstances. FX
  9. I went back to Slackware. Much easier. FX
  10. That first link that cybr posted I have been trying to understand it, but not quite sure what to do. Here is what I have... Disk /dev/hda: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4865 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes What numbers do I put in and at what prompt? Sorry but kind of lost on this one. FX
  11. Grendal I have the FC 2 final and yes it still does that. I also tryied the sfdisk -d /dev/hda | sfdisk --no-reread -H255 /dev/hda fix and it didn't work. If you decide to install go to the sites that cybr posted and do them word for word. I would not make you any promises. Not sure what cybr would say, but yet he is much more knowing about Linux than I am. Whatever you decide to do, good luck and back up anything you tresure on your windows side. FX
  12. I stand corrected. Your sorry about my wifes pc! you should be me! <<<< Her Im just mad or still mad. Like I have said numerous other times. Redhat 9 was the first, well second, but my first love of linux. Fedora Core 1 was right along with it. Im just mad about this deal thats all. Hopefully its gets better with age. FX
  13. Thanks for the links cybr. Its a little late for me, but it might help someone else. :P Personally I dont see how they could release something like that. Fedora Core if Im not mistaken wants to go for the desktop market or would like too, again if Im wrong correct me. Anways joe blow the windows user is not going to go through all of that to install Linux. Theres enough to learn without having to almost know command line right off the bat. Fedora Core 1 is a worthy canidate for someone wanting to try linux. Not as easy as say MDK, Suse or Xandros, but still it can be done. Core 2, NOT!!! I have lost faith in the development of Fedora Core. Although I haven't downloaded any RECENT iso's to see if its still doing that, I would be really dissappointed if they haven't fixed it YET. Seeing as how it was doing it since the 2nd RC. If I was installing without dual booting (yea yea flame away ) I wouldn't care. Most new linux users dual boot though thats the sad thing about what Core 2 does. FX

    VNC Problems

I wish it was working so I could take a screen shot of what I was talking about. Here is what I want and need to do, but I do not get that file to change those settings. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/sh...+desktop+in+vnc I don't get the "xstartup file" I lonly get the "xstartup" excutable. FX

    VNC Problems

I don't think its that real. lol I know that when I ran VNC I could log into my server and the same exact desktop that was on there would show up in VNC. I've never tried having windows open and then logging in. I do know that I can run the server from VNC just like as if I was working on it itself. If that make sense. FX
  16. Im glad your happy with FC2 and more importantly with Linux now. I started out with Mandrake for a very short time like you and then moved to RH9/FC1. Got the itch to learn other distros and after trying a couple others I finally settled on Slack. (for now) Believe me though I still have withdrawl pains from Redhat/Fedora and would probably go back in a heartbeat if updating to the next release with command/repos. (like deb, gentoo, slack can) was supported. I have heard rumor that they are working on that, but haven't heard nor seen anything set in gold on it. Play and have fun with Linux and Fedora. Its a nice distro and very powerful. You can get "Fedora Unleashed" at bookstores like Barnes and Knoble. Get it and read it. I also have a book called Fedora Toys. Has something like a dozen or so projects you can do with Fedora. FX

    VNC Problems

Yes VNC supports "real" desktops on either Linux or Windows, and HJ hit the nail on the head. One problem I don't have that starup script to edit. I have the excutable startup, but not the actuall script to edit. I have done it a number of times before but for some reason this time I am not getting the editable script file.

    VNC Problems

I can connect fine. Its the getting the "normal desktop" that I cannot get. I don't get the "xstartup" config file to change the settings so when I connect to the other pc I don't have the Xterm desktop, but the normal desktop that, that machine is running. I am also running Slack. FX

    VNC Problems

Im trying to setup VNC so I can just see the "normal" desktop and not the "Xterm" desktop. Now I know the coding and I have it saved for the "x-sessions" or "xstartup", but I don't get that file to tweak. I get the "xstartup" excutable or application, but no file to tweak it for the "normal desktop" look. What am I doing wrong? Thanks ahead of time. FX
  20. http://www.novell.com/community/linux/orde...?sourceid=uscin Found that link at Distro watch and from what I understand they will send you some free stuff to evaluate after you fill out a small questionaire. I filled it out for Suse 9.1 Pro. See what happens. FX
  21. I think I am stuck with the Ugly Star. I tried it both LZ's way and iky_tg's way and its still there. Even rebooted. FX

    After a Year

Well first disk has/had a "ramdisk" error. Might have a bad burn. Rebooted the pc. (windows) and doing the first cd burn over again and see if that fixes it. If not, looks like Slack for good then. FX

    After a Year

I think Slack is easy to use. There are things you need to configure by hand. Not much gui config apps in slack. Since you already have/had a linux install it will be real easy to install Slack. Only takes about 25 minutes from inserting the cd to a gnome desktop, or kde if you prefer. If you need any help let me know I can give you a hand. FX Edit: I do have to give alot of thanks to cybr though for teaching and helping with what I have learned. Also the peeps in #musb have helped alot also.
  24. Well I think its been that long. Im gonna give MDK another shot. Been using Fedora/Arch/Slack over the past year, with really liking Slack. Not sure why, but I just can't seem to settle on one distro and stay with it. So Im gonna try MDK again. Hoping that urpmi can keep my system up to date and maybe, just maybe I can do it with cooker so I don't have to reinstall again in another 6 months. :) If I last that long. FX
