  1. Whenever I boot the system I have to add manually in terminal the following comands to have some external devices working: In order to make the system load these modules during booting time I inserted in /etc/modules all these lines, but unforntunately with no success. Any help will be very much appreciated.
  2. bvc, it's starting to drive me crazy, I've already tried everything suggested here but without no success. I've also removed usr/bin/mandrakegalaxy and typed gnome-session save as recommended but ..... I will place the pics of I got here. Thanks.
  3. bvc, sorry for my stupid question about what a theme engine is. I've been using linux for only 1 month and naturally I will have to spend much of my time to acquire some valuable knowledge in order to avoid this sort of question.:( Reading a FAQ in art-gnome site, there's a tutorial teaching how to install GTK theme engines and another showing how to install GTK 2.x themes. When I installed MardiGras theme (as a root), I applied the dragging method and everything worked like a charm.(buttons, scrollbars and so on). It was not necessary to install any GTK theme engine!!! I've tried all the recommendations here concerning user permissions, file sharing and whatever, but the problem still persists, I mean: as a root everything works fine, but when I log as a user and install a theme (using dragging method) that has some "Aqua" butons, it doesn't work. Is it a bug or a problem between user and computer? Sorry for being persistant with this look and feel (make-up) questions. BTW: Do someone here recommend to try enlightenment?
  4. I've downloaded some GTK 2.x from Theme Depot (Aquesco-gtk-blue, Aqua Metal,MardiGras) and probably you are correct, but how to get the "theme engine"? Some additional information: as normal user when I run some root application like gnome control center and linux conf, despite being under a simple user environment, these applications are affected by the theme and its controls, boxes and scrollbars work smoothly.
  5. Thank you all for the imputs, but I've edited my first input in order to give a better explanation of the problem.
  6. Under Gnome and as a root I suceeded in installing and selecting all available themes for my desktop. In order to be able to use these themes as a simple user, I've copied the contents of /root/.icons folder to the /home/user/.icons and the same for the themes folder, /root/.themes to home/user/.themes. I've already installed the themes as a user, but unfortunately the problem persists, it seems as I have some problem of appearance configuration here. I've checked all configuration possibilities under gnome control center, but there isn't anything related to buttons appearance issues. Edited in order to give a better explanation of the problem. Sorry for that and thanks for the inputs.
  7. Ok. That's what I did yesterday as soon as I posted this question. Of course it worked, but for me it doesn't sound reasonable to have to create a path with application launcher to be able to call the program, considering that in most cases you call the app with a simple comand through console. What is it? A bug or something that doesn't have an explanation? Thanks again and despite my last question, what counts is that the browser is running pretty well.
  8. I got it!!! Evething went ok, just running Firebird 0.6. At a first glance it looks perfect. The best one I've tried.(there's no account for taste!!). The only thing I will have to study is to find a way to create a shortcut to the program or solve the issue that Firebird doesn't initialize through terminal. I have to run Nautilus and click on the MozillaFirebird shell script icon to make it run. I will look up in the Mozila Firebird Help site if there's a solution for this problem.
  9. Ok. I think I'm using firebird just now. But How to make sure of that, considering tha in MDK 9.1 mozilla software is originally installed. After installing firebird I ran through console "mozilla firebird" comand and of course a browser has just started running. But when I check the help about it says Mozilla 1.3.1. Where is firebird??? How to be sure that it's running instead original Mozilla?
  10. Considering tha I'm a real ex-windows user (Thanks to all of you), I would like to know which software I could use to scan some pictures I have. Under MDK 9.1, I wasn't able to find an application to do this job. Using The GIMP the only option is avaiable is to acquire sreenshot images. How could I go about scanning some pictures? Which app to use? Any help , as usual, would be very much appreciated.
  11. You are right tyme!!! I was, as usual, running kwrite. . Just changed my old habits and using Gedit. Thanks.
  12. What the hell is going on out here? During MDK 9.1 installation I opted to have both enviroments installed but I've decide to have GNOME as my default Linux interface recently. Under GNOME, whenever I have a KDE application running, the font size of these application is quite different from what is configured as the system font. Does anyone have any idea of what happens?
  13. Could someone give me any suggestion about a good browser? I've already tried Nestcape, Opera, Konqueror and Galeon and I would like to test as many browser as possible in order to evaluate which one satisfy my needs.
  14. Thanks paleo, but : I've heard that the action of just deleting the directory where the app was installed is not the best practice. As I understood there is the possibility of some files with dependencies to this application not be deleted due to being installed in other location. Do we have to consider this situation?
  15. Does anyone happen to know how to uninstall netscape? It was installed in "/usr/local/netscape" directory. I've decided to have Gnome here instead KDE and just trying some browsers in order to make a final choice. I've already tried Konqueror (very heavy), Mozilla (the best one), Galeon(2nd one) and Netscape. Netscape is awfull, its interface, fonts, speed, etc.... Any suggestions? BTW, under Gnome, any KDE original application runs with a font size (system font sizy) completely different to what is configured in GCC. What's is going on?
  16. paleo. Ok, MP3 gain working... thanks tyme and ramfree17, sorry for the lack of attention i have installed both all out program, mp3 gain and normalize, will check its functionalities. normalize volume plugin already running in xmms.
  17. tyme: the normalizer isn't in the same directory where the visible xmms plugins are. after a search, normalize was installed in the following paths: 1 ) /usr/lib/gimp/1.2/plug-ins > where I found a executable file named normalize, but any shared library file type. 2 ) /usr/local/bin > where I have 3 files: normalize -ogg, normalize-mp3 as a perl program and normalize as a executable file. The xmms plugins can be found in: /usr/lib/xmms/general > as a shared library file types At a first glance it sounds a little strange the normalize hasn't created any shared library file type. What you think? paleo: I was used to using MP3 GAIN in windows and it's really a good software. But unfortunately I didn't succeeded in installing this binary software after its extraction (sorry, but I'm a new linux user). I will give a look at some books in order to know which comand(s) to use to install binary files. Despite of that, I would like to solve the plugin issue and at the same time have MP3 gain installed. Any additional information and help will be very much appreciated.

    Xine error

Michel: I did consider it a challenge.... As a newbie, I've never seen myself capable of doing a so hard software installation as I did. After many years used to just click on a icon to have a sofware installed, I can consider the xine-lib-1-beta 12 and gxine-0.3.3 installation a real "success", at least I was able to play some dvd's despite of some "minor" observation messages!!!! as bellow: What are the meanings of these messages? I've uncheked the the cddb box, but still trying to connect to something..... I also don't understand the meaning of XV extension and "usable yuv12 port"??!?!?!? The graphics hardware driver doesn't support XV? What's XV? The point is: What's the importance of this sort of details, if everything here seems to be working properly? Anyway, thanks for your advices. and aRTee, thanks for your constant help.
  19. I've downloaded the plugin and after installation it's not listed in the effect/general plugins > effect plugins area. Does anyone have any clue?
  20. Does anyone know if there's any software desingned for linux to normalize the volumes of a MP3 collection? I have a bunch of them and all the time I have to adjust the volume whenever xmms changes the song.

    Xine error

Sorry for my silence aRTee.... was in a business trip. After installing some missing plugins I got everything working properly here. Thanks. BTW, do you have any suggestion of a good dvd player, with some good skins, whatever.....

    Xine error

After having installed these packages from PLF. I've gotten the following error message when running Xine through terminal: Before installation I was not able to play my DVD's with xine, despite the combo DVD/CD-RW drive has been recognized by MDK 9.1 Any help will be very much appreciated.
  23. zero0w: It's the sort of thing that I really think isn't going to add any value to the linux cause and existance (as you smartly defined). Again, thanks for giving me the oportunity to listem my cd's collection. Sorry if I was polemical .... All the best.
  24. Ok todd. Connecting with broadband and with qtella alredy installed and downloading mp3's files. To my opinion... Qtella has a better interface than gtk gnutella, despite some bugs. Thanks. william
  25. zero0w and Todd: You can imagine what is going on here. I'm just in front of my laptop (as root) and xmms is playing Syncronicity MP3 song while I'm typing this words. Yeah, we succeeded together !!!!!! I've tried to have the cd loaded and xmms has just recognized my counting crows cd!!!! It's something unbelievable!!!!! The extigy is working properly well!!! :D After insisting and following your recommendations (downloading the cdparanoia plugin and configuring cd audio player / applying that tweak of unplugging the Extigy before booting and plugging it with MDK loaded) everything here worked like a charm. The KMix shows as avaiable mixers "USB Audio Class Driver"?!?!?!? with only 2 sliders Volume and Pcm?!?!? :?: I will make some experiences changing user and checking harddrake, other xmms installed plugins and Kmix configurations, to understand what exactly happens. Todd. No problem with you words!! I understand what you mean. Sometimes when things don't work as we expect, we should better to relax and give time to the time...I didn't consider offensive your commnents. Thanks again for your precious help and advices (I was almost giving up). zero0x. No words to express my gratitude for your help. As I told you before, sometimes I start thinking and concluding that the problem was between "the new user and my laptop" and still is, but I will study and learn linux....more and more. You can imagine how I'm feeling now, all external devices working on a laptop with linux MDK 9.1, despite a bunch of sites warning you to think twice before doing that. Isn't something special? A success case?? Without all of your help it wouldn't have happened!!!! Unfortunately I still have to download mp3 files with Kazaa software under windoze OS. Any suggestion of a linux software to do this job??? Finally, I think we can consider this thread closed!!!! Thank you all!!!
