  1. I removed a line in /etc/fstab and the icon disappeared after a reboot Thanks. I couldnt find any relavant line in the .drectory file (but that was after the reboot)
  2. I installed mdk 10.1. All problems it caused are resoved except for one irritating minor icon on my desktop. It refers to the memory card (reader) connected to the computer (USB). After installing 10.1, a new icon appeared, the "sandisk imagemate II". This one properly shows me the files stored on the memory card. The other icon brings me to nothing. It seems a residue from the older mdk 10 installation. Its name is harddisk (part1) [mnt/memory_card]. The right mouse click produdes 'open' and 'propertiies' only. As root I deleted all files on the computer referring in one way or another to memory_card or devscsihost0bus0target0lun0part1mntmemory_card.desktop (which iis what properties indicates apart of location: /(devices)). However, the icon remains on the desktop, also after a reboot.
  3. I changed ht into on in the lilo conf file and now it works fiine. Using the old append line caused problems Thanks
  4. In my lilo conf old file the append lne was as follows append="devfs=mount acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda7 splash=silent" Now In the new lilio conf file as folllows: append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda7 splash=silent" Should I use the old one? Thanks in advance
  5. The title sais enough. Since I installed mdk 10.1, the computer performs all task after requesting a shut down of the system. It send the term signal and the kill all signal, but when it comes to shutting down, the computer seems to receive an instruction (a minor click), but it does not really shut down The mdk screen with the tasks performed remains.
  6. It worked, Thanks. I just deleted the standard printer in harddrake. In KDE it remained the standard printer and I can use it without problems now
  7. I installed mandrake 10.1. However, when I turn on my printer, it starts printing a lot of pages of unknow technical computer rubbis. When I turn the printer off, off course it stops But when I turn it on again. it continues printing these things. I can't find any other way to stop it. I am not able to print my files now. Any idea how this can be fixed? I use a hp deskjet 9300 printer thanks in advance

    dc10+ install

I'd love to edit my old video's on linux. I have no other choice than using a pinnacle dc10+ card together with studio 8 on windows. All attempts to install a driver (zoran) for dc10+ failed. These seem to be made for Suse or Fedora only. Everytime I try I get messages like "I can find directory so and so". Any idea if there is a suitable driver for mandrake 10 somewhere? Thanks in advance Earny

    Configure error

installing gcc c+ helped to make run ./configure. However 'make' is protesting now. This is what it says trying to install Kshowmail Good - your configure finished. Configure error

Yes I am on mandrake, However the Kshowmail version of mandrake appears to be inferior. Everytime I close the program it looses all info including account info. According to the author this seems to be a widespread problem. I have to setup accounts over and over again. In addition there is no gimp 2.0.x rpm version as yet. I've got to do that with a tar.gz file. Finally there are lots of programs that are only availlable as tar files. Using Mandrake doesn't necessarlily mean that I have to stick with (mdk) rpms, does it? Thanks for the reply anyway

    Configure error

During several attempts to install programs (kshowmail and gimp 2.0.1) I get the following message after typing ./configure as root: /lib/cpp" fails sanity check I installed cpp, but it did not work any ideas? thanks in advance
  15. Anna, This is the input device section of my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard1" Driver "Keyboard" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "us_intl" Option "XkbOptions" "" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection I use a USB cordless mouse Kmack, please take your time. My problem is not the end of the world and your health is far more important. BVC and Anna: It's not clear to me which part of the XF86Config-4: file I have to colpy. What I will do is run Knoppix from CD (the tablet works on Knoppix) and see what Knoppix included in the file. Regards Earny
  16. Ah, I onderstood that you don't wish to reinstall mandrake 9.2. The other solution is to upgrade (not really) mdk 9.2 with the same cd's (an option during the install procedure) . In that case it leaves all installed software in peace and It should have the same effect. Good luck
  17. My previous message was not very kind, but nevertheless well meant. Do you have a knoppix 3.3 bootable disk? If not Download it. Use Google and look for Knoppix 3.3. Download. It is the most remarkable rescue cd I've ecer used. With that you can reach the boot sector of your hard disk and edit as many files as you wish. Another solution is to reinstall Mandrake from the CD and your new Lilo.config will (or may, this is a disclaimer) adjusts everything
  18. The most beautiful flowers grow on the top of very steep rocks.
  19. ??????????????? I get curious. So: do not hesitate to do so :D I will try out your advise later. Tonight there is "JX" (which does not necessarilly mean that we live in the same city ;) ) Regards Earny

  21. I changed edited /etc/modules: Now it looks like this: # /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time. # # This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are # to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with # a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored. scsi_hostadapter wacom usbcore input I rebooted, however no result.
  22. OK step by step: First Kmack's questions: Yes I just double clicked on the rpm's using konqueror file manager as a root (Anna taught me that before) Because I used it as root, it didn't ask for my password I copied the file "wacom.c" in the directory /lib/modules/2.4.22-10mdk/kernel/drivers/usb Don be concerned about my boot message. My machine behaves as it should Now it's Anna turn the Kernel I'm using is 2.4.22-10mdk I uninstalled the kernel source 2.4.22-21mdk I download kernel-source-2.4.22-10.mdk.i586.rpm I installed it Configure your driver: ok but how? 23. Thanks a lot you all. But give me a short break to absorb all this info. I just spent some time for other matters (work, family, I presume you are familiar with these things) and after that it looks like half the Linix community is trying to solve my little problem. Great feeling. You'll hear from me. I don't give up easily. The more I get involved in this, the more I find out how little I know about Linux. Can anyone recommend a good book about Linux that brings me step by step on an appropriate level. I mean a book that doesn't assume extensive knowledge right from the start. The one I bought was too simple and it doesn't go much further than finding files and how to edit them. What I find on the net is unreadable. regards Earny
  24. L don'want to complicate things too much. So I keep the existing kernel intact. I run slocate -U and I found wacom.c in the usb drver directory of the new kernel source. I copied it into the driver directory of the old kernel and I will see what happens after a reboot.
  25. Thanks Kmack I show you what I did root@localhost earny]# locate wacom /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input/wacom_drv.o /usr/X11R6/man/man4/wacom.4x.bz2 /lib/modules/2.4.22-10mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/wacom.o.gz [root@localhost earny]# Than I downloaded kernel-source-2.4.22-21mdk.i586.rpm (2.4.22-18mdk was not available on the mirror I found, so I guess the newest update should be ok) and I installed it using konqueor (works nicely). [root@localhost earny]# locate wacom.c [root@localhost earny]# And in order to prevent booting problems: [root@localhost earny]# Reading boot sector from /dev/hda Using GRAPHIC secondary loader Calling map_insert_data Mapping message file /boot/message -> message-graphic Calling map_insert_file Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk Mapping RAM disk /boot/initrd.img -> initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img Added linux * Boot other: /dev/hda1, on /dev/hda, loader CHAIN Added windows Writing boot sector. /boot/boot.0300 exists - no boot sector backup copy made. [root@localhost earny]# ??? Where did the new kernel update go? I'll tell you what: The old kernel 2.4.22-10mdk is where it always was: in /lib/modules The new one 2.4.22-21mdk in /usr/src/linux I wonder whether the new one is used by the system. Do we get any closer? Regards Earny
