  1. What a fuzz, but at least you all convinced me to search for another cause. I reinstalled mdk 10.1, but the problem remained. After consulting my router supplier we found out that the cause was there. I use the official 2006 release (power pack dvd). So that could not be the problem After installing and configuring a new router the problem was solved. Nevertheless it remains strange that the problem with the adsl connection only arised after a linux reboot (generally within 15 minutes) and not after a windows reboot. With regard to KDE, I experienced some crashes (freezing) having 5 (obviously demanding) applications open. Another irritating thing is that the lay out of the right side of the kde bar changes spontaniously after opening certain applications (leaving an icon there). Also the start menu sometimes leaves away entire programm groups, which reappear after a reboot. With mdk 10.1 I never experienced something thing like that. In addition: my file shredder (to empty the trash can), which performs excellently iin 10.1 didn't work anymore in 2006. In 2006 I replaced it with with kgpg (a kde utility) but the files destroyed with this programm were easily recoverable using R-Linux under windows. This is really a serious issue for me as destroying confidential information is essental for me. I appreciate the efforts of Mandriva to improve its distro's. The new lay out looks great, but there are too many practical issues which are too time consuming to cope with. So, I really had it and Iĺl stick with mdk 10.1 for the time being. Regards, Earny
  2. I had similar problems. The windows coputers recognise the linux (samba) only after 10 minites. What is worse is that mandriva 2006 kills the adsl conection in the network after a while. 2006 is the first distribution I regard a failure. Many inconsitencies and kde crashes (on a 2800 mhz machine with 1 gb ram!_. I'm tired of it and get back to mandrake 10.1
  3. My printer is a HP Deskjer 9300. The driver was installed automatically when I installed mdk 10.1 With other files there is no problem. word files are printed flawlessly.
  4. I can print pdf files. I use Ghostview as well as Acrobat reader. Both give a mess of numbers and letters.
  5. I did it manually and now it works after a restart of the x server Thanks By the way the xev command didn't work neither as root nor as user.
  6. You believe I didn't try that already?
  7. It's a bit different now I reinstalled 10.1 and choose for ps2 wheelmouse. This worked fine, also after several restarts After changing the mouse in mcc into usb three buttons + wheel it worked as it should. Until a restart. Affetr that the wheel stopped functioning again. Nothing I can do about it. oef
  8. Maybe it has nothing to do with firefox. ctrl alt backspace didn't work my Xorg.0.log has the following last lines: II) Keyboard "Keyboard1" handled by legacy driver (**) Option "Protocol" "MouseManPlusPS/2" (**) Mouse1: Device: "/dev/mouse" (**) Mouse1: Protocol: "MouseManPlusPS/2" (**) Option "CorePointer" (**) Mouse1: Core Pointer (**) Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" (==) Mouse1: Emulate3Buttons, Emulate3Timeout: 50 (**) Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" (**) Mouse1: ZAxisMapping: buttons 4 and 5 (**) Mouse1: Buttons: 5 (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse1" (type: MOUSE) (II) Mouse1: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded SetClientVersion: 0 8 Any idea? Thanks in advance
  9. I installed 10.1 and the logitech cordless mouseman mouse worked fllawlessly, After installing firefox the wheel and the third button stopped working. After trying all sort of wheelmouses in mcc, I didn'tmanage to get it working again. in "etc/x11/x86config" I get this Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "MouseManPlusPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Seems ok Could my driver be out of order? By the way I looked already in other threads, but it did not bring me any further. Thanks in advance

    RAR [solved]

I installed unrar and ark works fine now (although you have to tell it manually that the file is a rarfile) Thanks Marked the thread Solved - Artificial Intelligence

    RAR [solved]

Does anyone know how to find a working rpm for the decompression of rar files? I use mdk 10.1 power pack. On the DVD there is nothing an ark doesn't work for these files.
  12. I use Thunderbird as my mail client. Great program. However. in order to open attached files its standard appliication is OO for .doc extentions. I would like to change that, but I have to borwse everytime to another applictaion to change that. The line 'use this appication for this type of extentions from now on' is vage and cannot be used. Ant idea?
  13. This is a 'cris de coeur': Pfff, I get frustrated. Mandrake 10.1 really seems the most troublesome distribution mandrake ever issued. Openoffice is slower than ever. (I finally installed ms office using wine in order to get a smooth and workable office suite; at least it opens within a second)) and the system gets upset easily. On my computer (nothing wrong with it: 2,8 ghz and 1 gb ram) it acts as the greatest advocate for windows. Until a few days ago I was a dedicated advocate of Linux. But now I start to get irritated to read about the great features of mandrake 10.1 Am I the only one experiencing all these malfunctions? I have some experience with mandrake 10, but in comparison with mandrake 10, 10.1 is a failure. Also my flash card reader does not cooperate anymore. Everytime I try to mount it, it refuses (dev/sda1 doesn't exist, make sure to insirt a proper disk). The only way to use it is to reboot with a flash card in it. Bit don't try to put another card. It simply refuses to recognize the new one. It goes on showing the directories of the card taken out. Is this possible? Does this sound familiar? If I can't solve this elementary problem, I consider to reinstall mandrake 10 again. ps: don't come up with the easy argument that linux is meant for more sophisticated computer users, because this is not in the interest of mandrake shareholders
  14. Right, but than you will have to boot first. I tried with Knoppix, but I coulnd't find a way to get editing rights for the fstab file.
  15. My question was not for nothing. I messed up and it was so desastrous that I couldn't even reboot anymore I finally decdied to go for a full reinstall. All problems are solved now (apart of the extra work to install specific applications and configurations). The moral? Thre is always a solution Thanks anyway
  16. p.s.: what kind of harddrive have you added? a sata drive? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Do I have to add the first to lines and replace "/dev/hdb5 /mnt/win_d vfat defaults 0 0" by the last line? (I check before I do stupid trhings) By the way. My hard new drive is a straight forward 200gb western digital 7300 rpm. I can read it as long as I'm root Thanks in advance
  17. 18. I installed a new (2nd) hard disk. I divided it into two partitions (ntfs and fat32). The files on the existing fat32 partition on the old drive were moved to the new one. In linux I mounted the new partitions, but I cannot acces them anymore as user, but only as root. I tried to change the rights using konqueror as root, however it continues to say that I am not authorized to change read, write etc rights. As user I am not even able to see the files on these partitions. Everytime I want to edit a file in Linux which is located on the new hd, I have to log in as root. Any idea how to change this?

    Konqueror problem

I was sick and tired of finding a solution. I deleted all hidden kde files (in .kde) and that solved the problem. I only have some work to do reorganising kde again. Thanks anyway

    Konqueror problem

It is not checked I'll reconfigure my mouse later today. I guess that causes the problem.
  22. Everytime I double click on a directory Konqueror opens a new window. I don't use the double click button of my mouse (of which I know that it causes the opening of a new window), but simply the left finger button. The settings are so that it shouldn't open a new window everytime. This happens since I made a certain mistake causing a new entry to appear in the menu when I click on a specific directory with the right mouse button. This icon is an application (word in this case). When you toch it it opens the application. My guess is that this appeared when I mistakenly chose this application with 'open with' I thought to get rit of it by correcteing it by choosing Konquror again when asked 'open with'. It is quite irritating. But the menu entry remains. Any idea? Thanks in advance.
  23. I could'nt try anymore. I'm afraid to mess up things. After another two hours last night I tried this and it worked: Open personal directory. Edit New File mount to location (URL) (I hope it is the rght translaltion) Than type /mnt/win_d This imports sort of config file And it worked My son can now read, write, print etc all shared files on my linux machine with his XP Home computer as well as printing the files on his own machine with the printer connected to the linux machine
  24. I 've got a linux machine with dual boot. I keep my files on a fat32 partition which can be appraoched by linux as well as XP. However. In Linux this partition is called /mnt/win_d. On other machines it seems impossible to share this partition. I can only share files and directories on my personal directory. When I make a connection from my personal directory to /mnt/win_d, I can see it on the windows XP machine, but I can't open it. The other shared directories can be opened read and written. I can find a way to get the win_d directory (partition) shared. Any idea how to solve it? Thanks in advance.
