I have Mandriva 2006. Following the instructions from the above link [root@localhost jose]# ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_08/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so ln: `./libjavaplugin_oji.so': File exists [root@localhost jose]# I try Yahoo java games, and it still doesn't load. Any ideas? Thanks I also noticed that in -> /home/jose/Documents/firefox/plugins there is also a /libjavaplugin_oji.so Java is enabled in Firefox, but still can't link it. Is this the correct command -> ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_08/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so thanks again OK I just installed Azureus and it loaded the java /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Java exec not found in PATH, starting auto-search... 2. If you want a really good operating system and want to learn at least a little of how to actually use a computer - spend some time to learn some Linux basics. Run the computer instead of it running you. Point well taken. I will continue to use Mandriva, of course. But I got a little frustrated with all these commands. Will definitely try to down load some Linux command tutorils now that I am up and running. thanks
  3. OK now that I have my wireless card working, I need to upgrade my Internet options. First Java Mozilla Firefox v 1.0.6 Konquerer v 3.4.2 None work with java I tried this in Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/faq#install Will the new Firefox 2.0 allow me to link to Java automatically? How do you install firefox 2.0? PS I was watching a program on the G4 network, this past Thanksgiving weekend. They were talking about the evoultion of video game. The program chattted with a lot of game programmers, and they all agreed that the DOS OS was too vigorous. Too many commmands to follow. The were mall more then pleased when Windows 95 was released because it was more visual, point and click. Then followed 98, XP, and the future Vista. bottom line, they all the expert computer programmers despised the command line beacause there were too many 'computer command lines' to remember. Then comes along Linux, which stated that it will be easier to use and more powerful. In my own opinion, Linux has taken us back to the Neantherthal age. All these damn command lines and keywords. I explictly downloaded the new java vversion to my downloads. but I couldn't find it. Even if I could find it, you have to do this, do that , then this and that, then make sure if that and this, and here and how much have you had to drink. if not, then go get more and do this and that . Soon I felt like a dog chasing my own tail. I follow all the instructions but, like Bill Gates says, point and click and install. ' Put this in the rant page or ban me if you want. I hav efound this forum page to be very useful.....................\ but still................ command line???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????/ Linux??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? to install type all this in.............. @#$%TFVCGYUJHOYF$RFT&*I)OI&^RE$%^&*(Ib vtr5tghei9r0oigjfy476fwey7ujdfc then it should wok, mine does
  4. OK, I finally got this one installed. Specs. Dual booted XP/ Mandriva 2006 Sager notebook 3.2Ghz 1 GB RAM Linksys WPC54G V. 3 (stated on card) drivers for the card- bcmwl5.sys LSBCMNDS.inf kernel from uname -a command - 2.6.12-12mdksmp ndiswrapper v 1.29 I kept trying to install using ndiswrapper, but to no avail. I then downloaded the ndiswrapper 1.29 and followed the INSTALL text document. It seems that I uninstalled the current version, and installed the newest version and followed the instructions. I left the card in the slot at all times ( I saw some tutorials that stated to remove then install ). Copy the two driver files to a directory in Mandriva ( mine were in /home/Linksys ) Assuming you have all the requirements.......... 1.Read the INSTALL document from ndiswrapper, and start at Downloading. 2.Uninstall the ndiswrapper and then install the new version. 3. Then you will install the driver inf file. 4.Then modprobe. 5.That takes you to the iwconfig. 6.If everything works OK, there should be an Internet wireless icon on the lower left hand corner, by the time. 7.Right click on it and select Configure Network. 8. Make sure WLAN0 is selected. 9. Then wait a while for it to kick in. Hope it helps!
  5. ~ KHow do you install the INTEL C++ 9.0 Compiler? when I enter ./install, it just takes me to the menu with 5 options 1a Readme 1b Release Notes 1c Installation 1d Support site 1e Home site or something similar. then it just keeps looping, it never takes me to the install wizard. I downloaded the tar file from Intel, and installed the kernel and the C development tools from Mandriva CDs. I requested the Serial Number from the Intel site. I downloaded Eclipse for Linux, but it looks like it only has the Windows exe file. Has anybody else installed the compiler? Kthanks ~
  6. Kthanks tyme, and everyone else: I managed to reformat the partition using the Mandriva HardDrake partitioner to be EXT3, with /. no boot or root or swap. In df, it now displays the XP 35 GB and Linux 20 GB partitions, nothing else. // AWESOME. I now transferred all the XP files from 'Devices' to the Mandriva partition; no problem, so far so good. Thanks again, you folks are making an expert outa me.
  7. k I think this is one of the smaller drive partitons that is full and needs to be cleaned....... at the df command Filesystem Size Used Avail Use % mounted on dev/hda5 780M 743M 0 100% / dev/hda1 35G 14G 22G 39% /mnt_c dev/hda7 19G 2.3G 17G 13% /usr KThanks again
  8. ~ K startx doesn't work. Now it reallly crashed, sometimes the screen is fuzzy and sometimes I DON'T GET TO THE PROMPT. here is the error messages. on startup it checks the status ( I don't know what that procedure is called ) Everythkng checks [ OK ] except: Checking if partions have free disk space [ FAILED ] Warning Free Disk Space is 0 which is inferior to 20000 MB // fior whatever the hard disk thinks it full. // last time I checked, only 13% was used, and the hard drive is about 1 year old, it should still be good. I am not online with Mandriva partition, only XP partition, and if it is a hard drive problem, why I am still able to log onto XP with no problem? KThanks again I really want to get this think working, hope the hard drive isn't Kcrashed. ~
  9. ~ X Sorry folks. But for an OS that is suppose to be stable, it is unstable. System just crashed. Now I can't even log onto Mandriva. I just get the # $ prompts, no KDE graphics. Looks like I need to go back to XP. XThanks any way. ~
  10. ~ KI have a dual booted XP and Mandriva hard drive on my notebook. I downloaded a few tar gz files using Windows, and restarted system to log into Mandriva. In Devices, the XP Media hard drive is displayed, I can play mp3 in Mandriva, from the XP partition. Now, I was able to move one tar gz file from XP to Mandriva partition ( 200MB) before, now I cannot move any more files. It states 'Not enough hard disk space'. However, there is plenty of space, and I renamed the file to be a shorter file name. I used the df command, and there is only 13% used disk space. The file I need to move is about 100MB, and I still have about 15GB free. Is there a coomand I need to use or why isn't it letting me move anymore files? I was able to move files before by clicking and dragging. KThanks ~

    DLink DWL 650

K Wireless card is DLINK DWL 650 ( no +), the Windows CD driver is Ver 1, and in Hardward it is Rev P, netprism.inf is the driver. Error after..... modprobe ndiswrapper FATAL modprobe cannot be found. // how do I install this modprobe ndiswrapper ? when I type in ndiswrapper -l....... netprism driver found It does not state anything about hardware found. And after dmesg r8169:eth0:PHY reset until link up many times over. The card, and kernel are up to date. // I think I got the Real tek from the DLINK site, in the Linux Download section for cards. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downlo...2&Software=True Also, I am using the neighbors linksys router to connect,. It should be a strong signal. I will again this weekend with my sister's linksys, and be online with her computer and trying to hack into my Mandriva system Thanks, Happy Easter.

    DLink DWL 650

K after trying to save modprobe.preload I am prevented from saving...... The document could not be saved, as it was not possible to write to file:///etc/modprobe.preload Check that you have write access to this file or that there is enough disk space available. I typed in my password to get to # And there is enough disk space and the DLINK DWL 650 is on the list. I am using this tutorial http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawi...hp/Installation I am looking at the last part of the tutorial. ndiswrapper for Mandrake users. Do I need to write ndiswrapper to the modprobe.preload. I think I will restart from beginning, unless you see something wrong. I think I am getting the hang of all of these penguins, thanks for all your help.

    DLink DWL 650

OK Kernel 2.6.12-12mdksmp ndiswrapper 1.12 Windows driver is netprism.inf at ndiswrapper -l, the netprism is displayed. I am trying to install ndiswrapper for DLINK AIR DWL 650, which is compatible with Linux Mandriva. at ndiswrapper -m, alias wlan0 ndiswrapper is added to modprobe.conf When I am at root # I type in modprobe ndiswrapper, it gives me an error. Now I read that, the command ..... ndiswrapper needs to be added to modeprobe.preload When I try to save, it asks if I have permission. Which I do. When I right click onto properties to set to Can Read and Wriite, it prevents me from doing so. I am at #, after I use my Admin password. How can I add that line? I think I am almost there. Any help, thanks. [moved from Networking by spinynorman]
  15. No I can not even boot. As soon as In turn on computer, it takes me staight to an all gray screen, no prompt, nothing. The computer does work. T
  16. K Using the 3 CD install downloads to install into one machine, ( CDs work because I used them to dual boot on my noteboot ) -> I tried to dual boot Mandriva with XP using two partitions, 10GB and 10GB and 1 hard drive; XP was first OS. XP installed OK, but Mandriva did not accpeot a lot of packages. Then I installed anoter hard drive; XP 20B and Mandriva 10GB, and tried to dual boot again. Again XP installed OK, but Mandriva did not accpeot a lot of packages. Then I installed Mandriva as a loner, on the 20 GB, just to see if Mandriva would work. This time all packages intalled, looked good. It asked for passwords, users, settings, etc... At graphics display, I selected ARK2000PV, which is the chipset of the Old Diamond Stealth64, selected 800x600 16 bit, with the correct monitor display, 800 x 600. Came up with the same problem after every install; a Gray screen, nothing else, no prompt; even after installing Mandriva with no erros. Thought it would finally work. system is: Gateway Computer 128 RAM 1 GHZ Pentium ARK2000PV, which is the chipset of the Old Diamond Stealth64 Graphics Even if the machine is slow, it should still work, right? Any ideas as to why it didn't install?
  17. OK I just created a root password by going to su and typing in passwd. But there is still no usr or lib, etc folders. I also reinstalled POVRAY, but now it says no home/usr/lib.... directory. Is there suppose to be if I had installed Administrator at install of Mandriva? Did I blow it? Please don't tell me I have to uninstall and reinstall Mandriva. I just got this bucket going. PS Now, I didn't create an Administrator at install and I set it to Standard, because I don't care about security. Anybody who wants to install or hack into my system, is OK with me. I also thought it would be easier for me to install programs at will.
  18. ~ K I finally dual booted XP and Mandriva 2006 on my Sager notebook after a good ole fashion reformat, and on my last try before I burned all my Linux CDs, literally. During Mandriva install, I did not create an Administrator password, I skipped it and only created a username and password. 1. Should I have created an Administrator password? In Home, there is no usr/ folder. After install of Mandriva, I discovered how to install other packages by using the Software Management in the Linux Control Center. I installed ndiswrapper and the Kernel, which is -> 2.6.12-12mdksmp 2. These two are needed to get DLINK AIR DWL 650 wireless adapter to work, it was in the list of Linux compatible adapters, right? In Konsole, this command is entered to get Kernel version-> uname -r It displays the version, mentioned above. Now, in setting up a network, wireless, in the Configure System, I get to the point -> Use a Windows driver with (ndiswrapper). 3. Now, this info tells me that both ndiswrapper and the Kernel are installed, but where did they install to? 4. To get ndiswrapper to install wireless adapter, it needs to link to the Kernel, right? 5. Would this be the command I enter into Konsole to link -> ln -s/usr/src/linux2.6.12-12mdksmp/lib/modules/2.6.12-12/build 6. Finally, I can't find usr, src, lib, or modules folders. Where are they? Did I need to create an Administrator password at install, if so, how can I create one after install. The reason I ask, is because I am having trouble 'installing' other 'programs' (POVRAY 3.6). It seems that they are suppose to install to usr or lib or other folders that are not created, even though it looks like the programs install. Thanks, New User. I see penguins everyewhere! ( I tiled those penguins on top, to my Desktop :) ~
