  1. Thanks, it was found and installed via the MCC. Checking it out now. Seems to be able to do what I need. It is amazing what is out there. Thanks
  2. On my XP pc I use a program called myBase to collect all sorts of stuff. See: http://www.wjjsoft.com/ Is there anything similar that will run on my Mandriva pc?

    Printer Setup broken

I get the Home page, but the other pages do not respond. I see someone else has mentioned this problem in the CUPS Forum concerning CUPS 1.2.10.
  4. I was attempting to set up to print to a printer connected to an XP pc on my network. In the process of doing that, my Printer Setup in the MCC has become broken. When I launch the printer setup, it pops up a dialog saying it is setting up a default printer. This remains a very long time, but eventually closes. The Printer Setup then is open, but unresponsive. Nothing I click on responds. There is a refresh icon, a CUPS icon, neither responds if clicked, the menus don't respond, there is a local tab and a network tab, they do not respond. I have shut down the Mandriva computer and restarted, but taht makes no difference. Any ideas how to restore the Printer Setup? Rik
  5. That was it. I had to install the proprietary driver. I am flipping the cube again now.
  6. I also just upgraded from 2007 to 2007.1. I was using the 3D desktop, now when I go to MCC Hardware 3D, it says my hardware will not do 3D. The two 3D choices are grayed out. What do i I need to do to get it working again? Thanks
  7. I did get updates last night with the MCC. Is this saying you upgraded from 2007 to 2007.1 just by changing the sources ?
  8. Don't know. I did not think 2007.1 was officially released yet.
  9. After asking about recent lack of updates in the forum at Mandriva Club, I learned that there is a problem with the updates getting out to the mirror sites. I have not received any updates in days. They are aware of this.
  10. I took the advice and installed krusader. The root feature is really handy. Thanks for that tip.
  11. Above, I said it already says "AllowRootLogin=true". I copied and pasted that text right from the file. However, I went back and looked at the file again after posting that, and then it was set to false! I have no explanation. However, I did edit it to true, and now I can log in via the KDE log in as root. However, once I am in as root, if I try to end the session and log back in as a user, it will not log in and returns me to the KDE log in. If I log in via console as a user, then launch KDE, I am back in as the user. It seems the added self-protection has made the changing user process more cumbersome. In fact my recollection is that the older version had a choice when ending the session, to relaunch as a new user. I no longer have a choice. Only button on the end session splash screen is to end current session. Anyway, I can do what I want to do, it is just more of an effort than it used to be.
  12. I did figure out that if I log in via console as root, then run KDE, I am then in KDE as root, so that is good enough for my occasional desire to do that. I thought something might be misconfigured in my KDE since I had the capability in 2006 and didn't after upgrading to 2007. I do agree that it is probably a good idea that it is restricted. At least it makes me slow down and think about what I am about to do. It already says: "AllowRootLogin=true" I think I found that tip when I first discovered this, but it didn't seem to work. I left the file edited with true. But I am glad to know about that trick for launching Kwrite in root mode. That will take care of many of my reasons for wanting to switch to rrot, it is to edit such restricted files using a GUI editor.
  13. When I ran Madriva 2006 with KDE I could log in as a user or as root. Since I upgraded to 2007, I can no longer log in as root. I get a dialog about not having permission to do that. What do I need to do in order to log in as root with the KDE gui?
  14. OK, I have my sources updated now. However, there are still no software updates found. I guess it has been a slow week. Very unusual. I have never used that browser feature before. Glad you mentioned it.
  15. Thanks, I'll do that then run the Easy-urpmi text again. I found that if I carefully probe the button with my cusor, I can find a "hotspot" that works.
  16. What I am asking is does the act of running the Easy-urpmi in the console only update the servers to be used for obtaining software updates? Or, does this also actually check for new software updates? If it ONLY updates the servers to be used, then I still need to do the actual check for updates, right? The page from the link here shows me the error, and for me the next step button does not respond. The text partially covers that button so apparently the page is not being parsed correctly in my browser due to the error. The alternate page I used worked OK.
  17. Cleared cache in Firefox, get same thing. Switched to Opera, get same. Tried a different site: http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ gets a good page. Ok, now that I have a way to get the commands to paste in the console, let me ask this. I copy the text that is generated by Easy-urpmi and run it in the console. Does this only update the servers to be used? I still need to do the update from the MCC, is that correct? (Or alternately, run update from the console) It has been several day since the MCC has found any updates, so I thought I might use Easy-urpmi to get some different servers to try.
  18. Strange, I am still getting same error.
  19. When I click the link at the top of this forum for Easy-urpmi, the page I get is non-functional. I see this text on the page: Warning: touch() [function.touch]: Unable to create file /home/projects/easyurpmi/www-data/tab.ser because No such file or directory in /home/mandrake/public_html/easyurpmi/functions.inc on line 170 Warning: touch() [function.touch]: Unable to create file /home/projects/easyurpmi/www-data/tab.ser because No such file or directory in /home/mandrake/public_html/easyurpmi/functions.inc on line 215
  20. I had similar problem. Could not get a DHCP connection with 2007. Used to work ok with 2006. I have to use terminal window to make DHCP connect with this command: dhclient eth0 That always works. The gui network setting never works.

    3D desktop...

I think if you just turn off the 3d in the MCC, you will have regular desktop..
  22. Thanks Luc, Those instructions worked. I now realize that I had tried them before but had simply copied and pasted the command, without editing it for my installation. Now I get the verification of the plugin working. Rik
  23. Firefox 1.5.0.1 installed OK. When I test Java here: http://www.bodo.com/javame.htm It indicates I need to install the plugin. Javascript is indicated as OK. How do I install the plugin? Clicking "Install missing plugin" doesn't help. Thanks from a Linux newbie. Rik
