  1. yes, that did the trick - i've now got 'adobe reader 8' on my desktop it opens up twice as fast as ghostview ( i've deleted about a dozen pdf's over the past year thinking they were corrupt files !) thanks for the help, Greg2
  2. this has happened a couple of times - the latest with the 'linux bible' 2007 edition - i download a pdf file - open it - and the thumbnails view on the lefthand side shows some blank pages ... as you click through the pdf , the pages shown as blank in the thumbnails show as text in the main window - but only for a split-second , then the content disappears .. i.e. although the thumbnail is empty - there is actually something there would this be because of a fault in the pdf viewer , or has the pdf file itself been improperly put together ? anyone had experience of this behaviour ? thanks
  3. i've just tried kaffeine - and it played the mp3's .... i then tried amarok - you guessed it - it played them as well ... :P so, problem solved ( after a fashion) thanks again
  4. it's not just 1 mp3, it's all of them - i.e amarok was working as it should , and then it stopped altogether . it's not a hw prob. - and since i reinstalled amarok , it might be some os interference which is responsible. i haven't installed any other apps. recently . i did try to install m-player from the dvd , but the message popped up 'couldn't read files' is there another mp3 - playing app. for mandriva , or a way of playing mp3's in kde which i could try ? thanks
  5. when i try to play an mp3 ( which previously played) , amarok now stops processing the track after about 5 seconds - ( no sound during the 5 seconds - but the highlighted title showed that something was happening) i tried removing amarok, and reinstalling - same problem i'm using mandriva 10.2 limited edition , amarok 1.2 any ideas ? ( sound is fine playing avi's etc - so it isn't the soundcard) thanks
  6. try looking at menu > system > configuration > KDE > sound > sound system this shows a form with 2 tabs - general & hardware on the 'general' tab - enable the sound system on the 'hardware' tab - enable full duplex ( this one might be unnecessary)
