    Suggestion

Thanks Grogerf for your feedback and the suggestion. Yes, the new graphical bootmenu is indeed on the to-do-list. And easily done. So far I've preferred the text mode for the live usb because some old BIOS have a problem to boot from USB when in graphical mode. Anyway, it's about time to switch to the more userfriendly graphical isolinux splash.
  2. Ah, ok. It is Metisse. Thanks! You see the desktop pager on the main screen/background, and you see it in the panel/systray. I think that is how Metisse is supposed to work. And I wonder too why there are always 9 desktops. Sorry, I am unfamiliar with the Metisse desktop. You can't get rid of the pagers on the main screen when using metisse, but you can disable showing the virtual desktop in the systray: Disable metisse and 3 D desktop, login to normal kde, right click on the panel -> remove from panel -> applet ->... Next time you enable metisse, the nine squares won't show up in the systray.
  3. wyoming, am I right that you are using MCNLive as a base system, and the included mklivecd scripts to create the new live cd? Then you need at least the following modules/patches: squashfs, bootsplash, unionfs In addition it is very important, as tyme already adviced, that you use the 2.6.17-13 kernel config.
  4. Just to let you know, I do follow this thread, looking forward to more requests and ideas. Reg. NTFS read-write, ntfs-3g - the stable version is included and enabled in MCNLIve Delft and Toronto. You can choose it at the boot menu, default is read-only. What would you prefer: to enable rw as default on the live-system or let the user decide? Info: so far we have not seen any problems with ntfs-3g.
  5. Welcome Jose! Do you have metisse (3d desktop) enabled? Could you make a screenshot and link to it so we can have a look? I am not sure when reading your description ...
  6. Can you post the content of the file /etc/fstab here?
  7. pep uses the live usb on a usb stick with one partition. he is booting from this partition. the problem is not an fstab issue. it is a problem that the basesystem resides in a compressed squashfs system and is initialised and mounted when booting. we don't talk about a normal installation, but a live system on a usb drive. i need to change an init script in the initrd to solve the problem. thumb drives do have a limited lifetime, it depends on the brand, the quality and so on. a recently purchased 4 GB flash drive should not have a problem, even with extensive writing to it. MCNLive does not per default write to the drive.
  8. The last MCNLive is Mandriva 2007.1, 100% :-) It is a Mandriva community project. We are trying to stay as compatible with MDV as possible. My impresssion, running pclinux, was that it is MDV 2007.0. I only had a closer look at the init scripts, the drakxtools and the versioning of the base system and the rpm's. But one can't be sure until one can see their exact changelog in their cvs/svn system, and the exact code. Back to the interview with Adam, good news can be found in his comment #56: http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20...mode=6#comments
  9. kde extra is for localization packages, I guess. Not necessary if you need English only. The decision between MDV One and MCNLive - well, my personal decision would be One, it has more applications, and it comes with proprietary video drivers included. But you need to deal with some missing programs, too: like virtualbox, codecs etc. No matter what you do, you can install all things later by adding the good software sources. And the folks here on MUB will help you if you encounter any problems. Edit: actually, my very personal decision would be installing Mandriva 2007.1 Spring free DVD - but I am afraid to confuse you even more :D
  10. Hi John, your software sources are okay, but you need to enable the source: main_updates ---> the enabled box must be checked and the updates box, in the GUI rpmdrake --> Select from where software packages ... --> on the left: check the 'Enabled?' box Then you click on the button "Update ..." on the right. Your second question. I am not sure what the mini iso would exactly do, chosing the upgrade option. I don't know the mini iso.
  11. Thanks Adam (The next weeks I won't be able to work on MCNLive because my build sytem is RMA, but we all can make a remaster-on-the-fly, with the new vbox and also i would like to get familiar with truecrypt on a live system)
  12. Now that you already installed Toronto, you may want to keep it :D You have an 'almost' 100% MDV 2007.1 Spring system. And with the good software sources you can get more. There should be a source called: update_source (but the name does not matter that much, if it is the correct source) ---> the enabled box must be checked and the updates box For main and contrib: it is ok. Please, can you do the following, open a terminal window, type: ... and post the result here, copy&paste
  13. What kind of installation? A normal to the hard disk? (it is not recommended). If yes, please read this: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?s=&...st&p=312791 Either your internet connection is not working or the ftp server: The update medium is already configured, but disabled. You would simply enable it. --> manage media --> tick the check box Don't add a second update source.
  14. I"ll fix the user writing in the next version. Reg. your hard disks, bad luck with the raid0 and the via chipset, it seems. Maybe there is a solution by manually loading some drivers, but I would not know which one. Someone else need to help.
  15. pep, I just reproduced the problem. And please forget all my questions. There is an issue, indeed, if you only have 1 partition and it is the same where your base live usb system is installed. The partition is available under /mnt/win_X or by clicking the devices icon. But a normal user can't write. Though all permissions are ok. It is a problem I have overlooked. Originally we mounted the live usb system read-only, to prevent any writing!! Since we introduced the persist feature it is mounted read/write. But I have missed this problem.(related to the setup of a live system). I use several partitions on an external drive, the other partitions don't have this problem. So far I can't give you a solution. Just a workaraound. You don't need to start a root session or to login as root. You would just start an application as root (within the guest GUI). You can do this by typing in the 'run command' mini cli in the panel, for example when you want to start kwrite as root: Each program can be started this way, just by adding: kdesu And congrats, pep, you discovered a bug :D -- or a feature?
  16. Welcome pep65, and thanks for your kind words. Am I right that you have one big partition on the usb stick where MCNLive is running? Well, the easiest way is to delete the folder and try do make a new directory as user guest. Or are you saying that you are not able to write to the partition on the stick? Also, try not to use /initrd/cdrom but the mount point under /mnt/win_X (where X depends on how many internal and external windows partitions are on your system). And: don't you see the partition, when you double-click on the devices icon on the desktop. Here you should be able to open it as a user and write to it. You can also try the dummy way. Boot with the CD, plugin the key, double click the devices icon, click the partition on the key, now create as user guest the directories. They should show up per default. At least, they do here on my system.
  17. My wishes. * lzma compression for squashfs, to get smaller live systems (need to wait for a new MDV kernel) * general clean up and different unionfs setup for mklivecd OR switching to draklive I would like to see a live system, where you don't need to reboot. This may sound a bit gaga ... For linux newcomers from the windows world. They would go to a webiste, and can perform some action so that a live system is downloaded and installed in a virtual image on their HD, without rebooting, without re-partitioning, without changing the bootloader. ATM these are several steps the user has to do: Install VirtualBox on Windows, download the iso, start vbox, create a virtual image, run the live iso ... and so on. Though it is pretty easy, it would be nice to have a small wizard to perform these actions.
  18. Hi Mediocrates, welcome, in some cases it is necessary to do the following. In Win XP * disable the use of the 'Restore Files" (or something like that) * disable the use of a paging file, virtual memory * make a general cleanup, incl. old restore points Then you need to reboot, start with F8 (is it called secure mode?), and run the defrag again. Set the GUI that you can see where the files are physically stored. You need enough room at the end (right side) of the partition. (Later on you can enable back the virtual memory and restoring mode in XP) The ntfsresize program need empty room at the end to allocate the space. Then you can start the installation. You can btw do a resize before the installation process. When you are running Mandriva One, start the Mandriva Control Center (menu: Configure your computer), go to: Mount point and ...
  19. Now that Delft and Toronto are done, and they are doing fine: Which features do you miss in MCNLive? What can be improved? What would you change? Anything you know from other live systems that you would like to see? Let us know ... ATM we are: HighKing (Michel), Maurice (Mauricio), korrel (Marco, the rpm packager), PeterM (Peter, design), a bunch of testers - they are all active on mandrivaclub.nl. And me, I am here :-)
  20. Just for the record. I am not planning to change my gender, i am a bit conservative, in this regard. Thx to the admins of MUB for my new nick
  21. That's ok, gb 63. Last time I checked I was a woman. Chris is my real name, the admins are about to give me a new nick. :D
  22. Ok, here is your script ... Start MCNLive. In the panel, in the mini cli, type: kdesu /usr/local/bin/mkremaster-advanced See, what you get
  23. :D , mindwave. thanks for the compliments. I also think that Toronto is not bad. Actually we have almost no bugs. I promise to post the new script with the option to choose your own iso name when you promise to not call me anna B) I need to talk to the admins here if it is possible to rename/change my nick. --chris
