  1. Dude, I hate to be the one to say this, but you will likely eventually reach the same level of frustration I did with *Mule.  Once you finally get it to install, it will crash at some point and you will tear your hair out to get it going again.  Then you may try another *Mule and eventually have the same results there.  I finally bit the bullet and am once again dual booting a <gulp> $MS with a *nix to have those few things that are just too much hassle to work in *nix.

    Not entirely true...

I used first versions of lmule, then early releases of xMule and now aMule and I have to say that latest beta version 2.0 RC5 is very stable (I had it running for 10 days once).

But anyway, I always have an script I made running so it checks wheter aMule is working and, in case is not, will restart it... can you do that in window$ ?? Because eMule for window$ crashes as well, doesnt it?

But I agree with you that earlier verions werent that stable at all and did crash quite often. After all is a project in an early stage so you know what to expect... although as i said the 2.0 branch is getting very stable. You can always report the bugs you find so will help devs to make it better.

I would rather recommend anyone to use aMule -even not being that stable- than to reboot into window$ where if the app doesnt crash the OS will do. :cheeky::mr-green:

  2. Heh, yeah.  If you're using a SWITCH, and I'm using a HUB, and you barely hit 2MB, and I'm (now) at 1.5MB/ps, then yes -- there is a problem.

well, technically speaking, my switch should have a slightly faster transfer rate ;) less packet collision. but really, it averaged 1.4-1.7

even so, it -is- a damned fast transfer rate. I transfered 1.5gb in about 15-20 minutes. not bad ;)

    1.5 GB are (1.5x1024=)1536MB --> 1536 MegaBytes

Your NIC works at 100 Megabits per second (Mbps), and 1 byte = 8 bites, so 100/8 = 12.5, your NIC works at 12.5 MB/second, but thats just in theory.

In reallity top ethernet speed is about 1/3 of the peak rate, so that makes a 100 Mbps NIC speed to be somewhere around (12.5 / 3 =) 4 MB/sec, and then you have overheat and other factors that do dicrease this speed. Mine works at about an average of 2.5 - 3 MB/sec, so i wouldnt consider yours' speed as a 'dammed fast transfer rate' but just as a lower-than-average though still normal transfer rate.

    Now we divide 1536 MB / 1.5 MB = 1024 seconds

    1024 seconds / 60 = 17 minutes

Those figures are more or less what you said you got.

  3. whe you update, it will surely ask you a lot about "blahblah, wrong signature, wanna install anyway?".

To avoid being asked about wrong signatures, issue the urpmi command as follows:

    yes | urpmi --auto-select

It works like a charm, no more questions asked B) :mr-green::headbang:

I first heard of it in www.mandrakeclub.com but dont know how it does to answer the questions, if anyone can explain how it works i'll be grateful.

  4. This is getting crazy. Why couldn't they just include all the crap in a whole package ?

  IMHO you are the one getting a litle bit out of hand, calm down mate, and keep in mind that you are talking about the unselfish work of others, i think that should deserve your respect. :deal:

I didn't install amule from rpm (altought it should work with the too), try downloading the tarball and follow this instructions:

    • tar -zxvf aMule-X.X.X.tar.gz (replace X with the right version number..)
    • cd aMule-X.X.X
    • ./configure --disable-debug --enable-optimise && make

When that finishes you can try to start aMule:

    • cd aMule-X.X.X/src
    • ./amule

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember that you need to have installed all this before compiling aMule:

    • wxGTK-2.4.2-1.i386.rpm
    • wxGTK-devel-2.4.2-1.i386.rpm
    • wxBase-2.4.2-1.i586.rpm
    • libcryptopp5-5.1-2mdk.i586.rpm
    • libcryptopp5-devel-5.1-2mdk.i586.rpm

In this url you can download them all and follow the instructions to install them.

    Good luck.

  5. I've tried lMule, xMule and aMule and they all ask for this sh**: libwx_gtk-2.4.so.0. I've searched the Internet, found two possible matches and installed both of them but the Mule still asks for that crap.

I use aMule and must tell you that everything you need you can download from their download section, and they do have their own forums (where you could have made this question), in one of them (amule_help i pressume) there is a sticky post with step-by-step instructions on how to install everything aMule needs and the program itself, which i followed and have had the prog working for a loooooong time.

  6. This is my question? Why isnt this page being traslated from english one? The last news is the release of Mdk 10 community!!!. And the last downloads added isMDK 9.1. Do the spanish web traslators need help? I think that if they ask for help there will be many people who would want to.

They did ask, not very long ago, I did offer help but somebody else came up who was better prepared to do the translation, I didnt bother to find out what happened in the end. If you wanna find out, this is the address of the guy who asked for spanish translators:

    gduval AT mandrakesoft.com

    Just drop him an email.

And in spanish there arent any good site about Mandrakelinux only in the net, so i think this page could be very helpful to the spanish who dont know much english or simply the ones who prefers read in their own language.

There is BloqDrake, chek it out, theyve got forums, tutorials and some other stuff.

Oh, btw, have a look here, where the people of Bloqdrake talked about the mandrakelinux.com translation.

    Regards,

  7. Yes, the offending Windows computer had shares properly setup.  I was using the proper login and password for the Windows computer, as well.  It seems my other Windows computer wasn't seeing it in Network Neighborhood, either.  Funny thing was, the offending Windows computer was still able to use network resources (internet/printing.)  I popped in my XP Corp CD and reinstalled it, applied SP2, disabled Windows firewall and configured Norton and my Linux computer was finally able to mount shares.  In addition, the other Windows computer was able to see the previously offending Windows computer.

    All is well.

Yeah, that sounds like the windows 'magic' we all know about and love... :lol2:

Glad to hear everything is ok now. :headbang:

  8. Yes, I did that, but then I got an error and I couldnt start my X, and I didnt know what to do and i reinstalled my MDK :-/

now im scared to do it again... hehe what a newbie i am

    Tom

You did what ? You did follow Echylo's (nice but somehow incomplete) instructions or the far more detailed ones at the FAQ & HOWTOs forum I pointed out ? I doubt you've done the latest...

Anyway I wouldnt recommend you to reinstall neither, post errors and s/b will help you out.

  9. I have heard SP2 turns the windows firewall on by default, have you tried to disable it? or are you quite sure is set to allow those connections??

Or maybe, are you sure that windows machine is sharing its drives? Can the other windows see those drives? No drives being shared would explain why liinux can see the machine in smb4k but not mount the drives...

  10. jlarter, I had the same problem too but i just didnt bother and stuck with the old drivers, I just thought i had done something wrong... Then i upgraded to MDK 10.1 beta1 and the driver installed fine in the new kernel 2.6.8-0.rc2.2mdk, so I guess you only get the error when installing over a kernel which had a previous version of the driver already installed, but dont know this for sure... anyway I just wanna ask you to please post whatever you do to make it work so we all know.

    Thanks and good luck.

  11. Hi there!

    Static ip windows: 192.168.0.117

    Dhcp or static linux: 192.168.0.4

    Router: 192.168.0.2

    Accespoint: 192.168.0.1

    Some Qs:

    - Whats an acces point ??

    - Can you post the netmask you use for those ips ? Do they all use the same?

    - Linux can ping windows but windows cannot ping linux, can windows ping the router ?

If windows cannot ping the router, try to see if it can ping the address 127.0.0.1, if it cannot, then itll mean the protocol TCP/IP is not correctly installed, so uninstall it and install it again, btw, what windows are u using?

And can you post the output of this commands please (from the linux machine):

    - ifconfig

    - route

I have never had the need to touch the files /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny, do yours content anything else than comments? (Mine are empty apart from a few comments)

I think that mandrakes firewall is off by default, but you can check in the Mandrake Control Center.

Ah btw, this got nothing to do with samba :P

    :headbang::headbang:

  12. I started to use linux for about 8 day's now and finding out more stuff and more and more.

Well done, welcome to this community. I'm sure you'll love it.

    1) I installed the ssh service and offcourse started the service. On my windows computer i installed putty to connect to my linux computer but i can' connect, what happens is putty jumps up stays in my screen for about 4 seconds with the black screen with green cursor and then quit's the entire program.

    2) From my windows computer i cannot ping my linux computer, and no i don't have a firewall that is active.

    - What distro are u using? Mandrakelinux??

    - How did you set the security setting during instalation? Higher than 'standard' ??

    - Have you set up networking correctly? can you ping your window$ box from the linux one?

  13. Firefox is a diferent browser than Mozilla.

Not really, because Firefox is a external browser from Mozilla. But both based on the best Engine: Gecko

Well, yeah, what i meant was that they're different in terms of installation, since both have their own, and that firefox is a stand alone browser, which is what i was talking about, youve taken the sentence out-of-context.

Apart from that, I agree: Gecko goooooood :headbang:

  14. Thats right, you buy the windows disc, and later there will be linux client to download to play the game.  There will not be a seperate boxed version!!

Oh well... I was gonna buy the game, or better, the linux version of the game to show support so other companies will take linux into account too, but with this approach of buying a window$ version of the game and then downloading the linux installer off the web Im better off saving my money and just downloading the installer, they wont be able to know wheter i really bought the game or not and my download will count me as a 'linux gamer' anyway, so whats the point on spending the money now? I dont really like that kind of games anyway, as i said, i just wanted to show linux support, i dont want to buy no window$ version no way. :furious3:
