It seems that there is a bug in menudrake in mandrake 9.0. Whenever I run the sucker and edit my menu, the screensaver listing in KDE control panel is empty. I found a quick and dirty solution for this problem (until a cleaner one like updated packages are found at least).

1. Copy all the files located in /usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/

to ~/.kde/share/applnk-mdk/.hidden/ScreenSavers/ (you may need to su to root in order to do this, the ~/ is basically /home/<user>/ )

2. You may need to change the owner of the files located in the /home/<user>/<blahblahblah> directory to the user from root.

3. Restart KDE.

4. The Screensaver listing should be back.

I am not sure where to put this solution, whether it is in hardware or tips and tricks. I also posted the same solution back to the old board. Hope people that have problems with this are helped.

Now it someone got OpenOffice.org and put serious money behind it to create a commerical version, now that would be worth $99. Mandrake Office anybody?

Someone already has, it's called Sun Microsystems.. You know.. the guys that puts out StarOffice 6.0? :)

Incidentally, I tried StarOffice 6.0 linux version (got a friend who works at sun). With exception of some fonts, adabas, and a better spellchecker system, it is basically the same as OpenOffice. I didn't even bother installing it when I upgraded my computer to 9.0

You did say you upgraded from 8.2 right? Not clean install?

I think the urpmi database is not converted completely from Mandrake 8.2 (4 CD RPMs directory) to 9.0 (only 3). You can try removing all the cd sources and add them up again using urpmi.addmedia. Or you can do a rpm --rebuilddb. If worse comes to worst, you can basically backup everything important and clean install 9.0 from scratch. It won't take that long to install 9.0 anyway (took me one hour including downloading and installing the updates). I guess that's one of the reason why the version number changes to a .0 release.

Extreme tech is not known for in-depth reviews or thought provoking articles. It seems to cater to the "overclockers dudes" I read those reviews and it doesn't even handle the details or complexities or difference in both distros. Heck.. anyone can install mandrake or redhat.. it's how to customize them and make them work the way you want is the problem.

If it doesn't cost 99 dollars to buy, I would've recommend it to people. Because of that, I always recommend mandrake to new linux users.

Is there a cheaper version or GPL version of Xandros that you can download somewhere? The screenshots and impressions looks cool for a desktop linux (instead of all in one distro like mandrake).

You know.. if you want the latest and newest thing Mandrake could offer, you could try cooker instead. It usually contains experimental packages that are geared toward the development for the next version of Mandrake. Note that it could break your system (they are experimental after all). Reading the cooker rpms, it is weird that gnome2-2.0.1-1mdk.noarch.rpm is only 3 kb. The other weird thing is that the version number for every gnome-* packages have version number from 2.0.1 to 2.0.8 or even higher.. Maybe mandrake just spread the packages out so they have different version name.. I dunno..

Anyway, try cooker. The link should be located at the left side of Mandrake home page.

Anyway, for those who wants pretty icons in gnomesword, just make symlinks from these directories to these directories

1. /usr/local/share/gnome to /usr/share/gnome

2. /usr/local/share/locale to /usr/share/locale

3. /usr/local/share/pixmaps to /usr/share/pixmaps

Now, if you install the bibletime software from texstar, you may notice that gnomesword cannot find the bible modules. All you have to do is empty the directory in /usr/local/share/sword and make all symlinks from /usr/share/sword to /usr/local/share/sword.

And for putting the icon in the menu, well.. that's what menudrake is for.

Ok Guys and Gals. I finally found out how to enable the spell check in openoffice in Mandrake 9.0.

1. Make sure that you have the appropriate dictionary and hyphenations rpm installed.

2. Now, open up openoffice, go to tools -> options

3. Go to openoffice.org -> Paths. then edit the Dictionary path to /usr/share/dict/ooo

4. Make sure that you got the right language setup in Language settings -> Languages, and got the tickmarks ticked in Language Settings -> Writing Aids.

5. Now you should have spellcheck working.

Anyway, if the setting doesn't keep, try deleting the /home/user/.openoffice directory, then restart openoffice and edit the options around. I made all my changes stay, with exception of the 109% view scale trick.

Now could you test if my theory on this is right? If it is, put a copy in trick and tips or tutorial.

Anyway, I think people who has simple pronounciation has it easy. They can pronounce it li - nucks.

Some people just don't read the instructions. Even in expert mode. No wonder they think linux is hard.. Heck.. my experience is that Windows is actually harder to configure than linux because I CANNOT FIND THE INSTRUCTIONS AND NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT THAT PARTICULAR PROBLEM! Ahem.. sorry to shout but this is not a good day for me. :)

Well, that should be enough for linux. Maybe not mandrake with KDE or Gnome, but it should be doable with lighter gui such as Flux/Blackbox or enlightenment or windowmaker, or if you really need the start menu, XFCE or ICEWM.

Well, as far as I know I can only suggest two things.

1. Buy a USB to Ethernet adaptor. Some of the models are supported in linux (Check http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdevcat.php?id=16) to see the models supported. It maybe a bit more expensive than a typical pci network card, but hey... if it works.

2. There is a way for a single NIC card to have two IP address, but I am not sure how.. It probably involve recompiling the kernel and such. Even it works, how do you going to route the ADSL connection to your network considering the cabling involved?.

Well, this is what I found out. Look at Setting -> configure konqueror ->netscape plugins. Int the directory listing, make sure that there is a directory called /usr/lib/mozilla-1.1/plugins in there. Well.. you can either do that or make a link of /usr/lib/mozilla-1.1 to /usr/lib/mozilla as root. That's why konqueror cannot find the plugin I guess, since there is no /usr/lib/mozilla directory in 9.0 Final.

Anyway, another thing is that the flash in www.macromedia.com doesn't work properly in konqueror. You can check other flash enabled pages for that instead. So if you go to www.macromedia.com and didn't see any flash, that could be the reason.

Try reinstalling the hacked freetype and freetype-devel rpms? Xft rpms?

Anybody wants to write a firewall tutorial (or firewall application tutorial) now that the favorite apps are found out? I am using firestarter and pretty much satisfied, but whenever I boot up the computer (hey.. I need to save of electricity bill), there are some errors whenever the bootup sequence is reaching iptables stuffs. I have to restart the firestarter firewall to even have internet connection. (It's probably caused by the iptables started before dsl pppoe is up). Is guarddog better in this regard?

Isn't there supposed to be a wav file or something in which Linus pronounces the word linux the way he usually does. I used to hear that all the time whenever I am using sndconfig.

Well, I am still in RC1 (downloading 9.0 Final as I am typing this right now, finally my DSL is on), but there should be some programs that you can do to uncompress zip files. I always use gnozip (it should be in the cds) to do that but I am sure there are others. Fileroller should work also.

Texstar has the rpm for bluecurve (named freecurve since RH is really iffy with names and trademarks) in his ftp site.

Well, you have to understand that not only mandrake 9.0 is a .0 release, there are so many fundamental changes in the software itself (like gcc 3.2, new libraries, new mandrake tools, and such) With all those fundamental changes, I am not surprised if it doesn't work as well as previous version. I too feel bitten when my pctel winmodem driver refuse to compile in mandrake 9.0 and found out that it is not compilable with gcc 3.x version yet, forcing me to change modem. I am still trying to find out whether my favorite linux bible study program (gnomesword) is compatible with gnome 2.x.

But at least the problems are solvable, even if it requires you to go back to old methods to solve it. Mandrake 8.2 is one of the most boring distro I have tried since everything is setup so easily. If it weren't for kde 3.x series and security patches, I would never do anything at all to 8.2. Let's hope that 9.1 will be better.

Probably not, The manuals in mandrake is one of the poorest point in the distro. That's why I never buy a boxed set, and prefer to give the money straight to mandrakeclub instead.

Well.. I'll be really surprised if there is an OS of any kind that after a fresh install, everything works outside the box. There is always something to tweak or twiddle in every installation of OS whether it is windows, linux, or macOS. In my case, I have to compile the modem driver (winmodem), make adjustment to /etc/fstab to disable supermount on floppy and zip, tweak XMMS to enable the digital cdaudio playing, create symlinks and icons to my windows partition, download the plugins for gkrellm so I can use some of the plugins, download hacked freetype to enable AA in fonts, download realplayer, flash, java, etc, etc,etc..

Well you get the idea :)

The thing is after everything is tweaked and twiddled to your heart's content, there is no need to tweak it again. That's what I want.. not an OS that force the configuration the way you don't want it to be (like XP, that reminds me.. WTH is Microsoft forcing its own driver for the UMAX ASTRA 2100U scanner. the scanner is basically dead weight now.. I am still trying to make it work.. grmbl grmbl)

Well.. I am not sure redhat can give away rpm packages for wineX unless RedHat is an authorized reseller of transgaming. The rpm version of WineX is not free, but the source code is (via cvs)

The logs are located in /var/log directory. You should check and delete some of the older logs. There are many people suddenly finding their / directory full and finding out they have a gazillion gig of wasted space in their log directory.

XBox is basically a specialized pc. Think an Intel compatible cpu mated with NForce motherboard (maybe the vidcard is a bit better than GF2, but probably not much) without the bloatware called M$ Windows.

Believe it or not, PC actually have more raw processing power than any of the consoles that is out right now. It's just the OS and the API that sux. If you cut down the compatiblity problems, I think you can cut out at least 50% of the programming time.
