  1. Wow. :o

No offence but I really couldn't follow what you were telling that poor guy. Clear descriptions of what is wrong and what you've done help enormously when trying to solve a problem remotely :)

when it comes to linux im not very good at describing problems if i have any and most of the time when i install linux i have problems with the sound card and not the video card

  2. hello all hope your doing well, i have ubuntu 6.10 installed on my dektop (finally got it working) and im having problems getting my video card working ie direct rendering 3d etc, i managed to get it working once but when i restarted my xserver messed up and wouldnt boot into either gdm or kde and it seems as if the sti drivers are messing breaking the xserver to where i have to use vesa or mesa in order to get it to boot, i have already posted this problem on the ubuntu forums but its slow go as theres so many posts on there that mine gets pushed back so im trying other linux forums, also here the readout from the lspci command, the video card is a ATI Radeon X1600 PCI-E 512mb video card

  3. yes im running 10.1 and i posted in one of the other forums on this site asking if i should upgrade or not, since i only use this for learning but since i cant seem to get alsa updated and/or get my sound card working looks like im gonna have to update

  4. hey all sorry for not updatting but i been sick and stuff so yeah but anyway, i have following this page to get alsa updated click here

also sorry for any typos in this post, now im not able to update my copy of mandriva cause of my processer, i think thats the error i get when i try to update, its a 600mhz P3

  5. ok after getting the above error fixed im not getting more, as there to many to post heres a couple of them

*** NO PREDEFINED KERNEL COMPILER IS DETECTED
*** Assuming the same compiler is used with the current system compiler.

    snyonr know this means?

  6. yes im behind a router and i use this to learn, i guess having my sound not working is kind of a good thing for me since, with the help of the people of this forum, i might be able to get it to work and in the process learn more about linux, cause thats what i want to do is learn, im in college right now at ITT Tech and am in the game design course and im pretty sure that i dont get a linux class of any kind, even know as much as i would like too, so this way and the net is the only way for me to learn linux in my spare time and i dont host servers on linux and thank you and anyone else who may reply for your advice and comments and i would like to hear more for people on this subject so that it can give me ideas and such.

  7. ok after been trying to update alsa and getting my sound card to work and everything and someone said that my version of mandriva is (which is version 10.1) a security risk and that i should upgrade, now first i want to know,is that true? and is there any reasons why i should, cause i kinda dont want too, so please give me some advice.

  8. ok i dont know if this goes here or not but here it goes, so im trying to install an updated version of alsa and when i go to install it and i do the ./configure commmand i get this

    checking for kernel linux/version.h... no
The file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h does not exist.
Please install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution
or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel
    sources (default is /usr/src/linux).

can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it? and thanks in advance for any help/advice

  9. ok i think i spoke to soon, when i go to test the sound i get an error, have been trying to get the error back but it wont come back for some reason, but i can play and hear cds, but if i play a mp3 i get a ticking sound in the speakers and also i can hear sounds from videos on the net, i looked in another post about the online video thing and the option someone gave to fix it didnt work for me, so if anyone else has some advice please let me know

  10. hello everyone its been a while since i posted here so it feels good to post again :D, anyway i just reinstalled linux on an old computer i just recently got and it installed fine, etc but theres no sound, everything is turned on and everything, but it doesnt seem to work, after searching google and reading the posts on here and doing most of the stuff they said to do didnt help, now i can here some sort of static in the speakers but no sound comes out, so if anyone can give me any advice at all i would be greatfull.
